LinkStash

They Built A Better Bookmark Manager!

With at least 3 different browsers in consistent use, our bookmarks and internet favorites were beginning to resemble a fragmented web spun by a spider on some serious methamphetamine:

Messy, messy, messy!

Fortunately for us, LinkStash provides us with a centralized, browser-independent place to store, organize, edit, and maintain our ever-growing collection of websites.

For starters, LinkStash conveniently opens and closes alongside whichever browser we're using at the time. It organizes links into a very familiar Explorer-style tree, and provides fields for tags, comments, ratings, passwords, date last visited and more.

A dead link checker means that there's no dead weight cluttering things up. A highlighting option makes select bookmarks super-visible and easy to find. A customizable toolbar lets us arrange our favorite commands in personal, custom arrangements. LinkStash even lets us secure entire bookmark files using strong encryption algorithms.

LinkStash doesn't just bookmark your web URLs, it bookmarks your file URLs as well! This means that you can bookmark files, documents, programs and even folders on your hard drive or network share, and have them all available right from LinkStash. You can tag, search, and dead link check these bookmarks the same as you would web bookmarks, and opening a file bookmark launches the associated program!

Give it a try! If you're like us, 5 minutes with LinkStash will mean the end of your Internet Explorer, Firefox, Netscape, Chrome, and Opera bookmarks. For good!

Brian H Hi- this program looks incredible! Lookign forward to purchasing and using. I noticed on product website that a "Family Pack" license is available. Would you consider offering the Family Pack License at a 50% discount as well (on the day of the deal), so I may purchase licenses for my family members? Thanks!
Aug 1 2011 at 10:44am
John Williams Brian, yes you will get the discount, just change the product to the Family Pack in the dropdown list. The bundle 3-pack is not included in the deal though.

Lupke Brother Hi John,

Such a shame it does not sync with firefox bookmarks at the moment. Will this feature be available in the near future? When?

I use your clipcache. Very great product!
Aug 2 2011 at 12:27am
VLM Lupke, I don't get your question - Firefox is listed in the last paragraph of the write-up as one of the supported browsers. Is there some issue we all might like to know about?
Aug 2 2011 at 3:22am
Lupke Brother @ TPEFVLMAS
Linkstash has an automated sync function for IE bookmarks, but only for IE. Other browsers you have to do manually. I.e. Firefox you have to export your bookmarks manually and upload the file to linkstash to sync your bookmarks. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Aug 2 2011 at 3:44am
VLM Regarding your nifty customizable toolbar ... is there a shortcut for every toolbar item ... for those of us who avoid the mouse whenever possible?
Aug 2 2011 at 3:50am
John Williams Bookmarks are stored locally. They are stored in a single file, so to move to another (new) computer just copy the bookmark file. There is also a portable version so you can have access to them on the move. For those with sensitive bookmarks you can encrypt the entire bookmark file too. And you're correct, you would typically use LinkStash for your bookmarks, no need to use FF bookmarks manager anymore. It is possible to put your LinkStash bookmarks into FF if you so wish to, there is just no sync for doing it with FF like there is with IE. There are keyboard shortcuts for many toolbar/menu commands, but not all of them.
XRayz Software Vendor - Aug 2 2011 at 5:10am
John Williams Lupke, you are correct about sync with IE. I am currently looking at syncing with FF, but I can't promise anything. Also I want to say that importing doesn't create duplicates, so you can import as many times as you like from a browser to update your LinkStash bookmarks without having to worry about duplicates.
XRayz Software Vendor - Aug 2 2011 at 5:18am
Lupke Brother @ John
Thank you John. I allready tested duplicate importing. Works great. I bought a copy!
Aug 2 2011 at 5:21am
John Williams LinkStash has its own system wide hotkeys, so you can assign a hotkey to open LinkStash, or assign a hotkey to add a bookmark from the currently active browser (which can be any supported browser: IE, FF, Chrome, Opera etc.)
XRayz Software Vendor - Aug 2 2011 at 6:08am
Eduardo Amado What are the differences/advantages compared to Linkman from Outertech?
Aug 2 2011 at 7:08am
VLM Thanks for all your explanations, John. Great to have a vendor genuinely present in the conversation.

So we can set systemwide hotkeys of our own choosing from within LinkStash, that way the same keys work for all browsers ... correct? And those may include Winkey hotkeys, correct? (Pleeeeeeease :):)

And we have a single LinkStash bookmarks file that can serve multiple browsers ... OR separate LinkStash files for whatever purpose we may have in our minds (such as they may be), either way ... correct? And each such file can be separately encrypted, in case we wish to destroy our own access to all our own bookmarks one day, correct?

Does a bookmark point to a specific place within a webpage or document, or only to top-of-page / top-of-file? (I ask, because there is another app called "Bookmark Docs", http://www.bookmarkdocs.com/, which points to anywhere within a page, for a specified list of supported document types.)
Aug 2 2011 at 8:43am
Rich OBrien Will LinkStash be upgraded to also support Chrome? Millions of us use Chrome and some people think Chrome is growing so fast that it will surpass Firefox in the next few months. I've been waiting for nine years for a good bookmark manager ever since a nearly perfect bookmark manager called Compass was never updated to work with newer versions of Windows. The list of LinkStash improvements in version 2.0 is impressive. I downloaded the trial version and attempted to install it but repeatedly get the error message: "The application was unable to start correctly." What I wished to find out was how LinkStash handles duplicate bookmarks. Compass found all duplicate bookmarks and showed the complete path to each duplicate so you could see exactly what folders and sub-folders the bookmarks were in to be able to make an informed decision before deleting a duplicate. I'm disappointed that I was unable to try LinkStash. It truly sounds like it may be the best bookmark manager.
Aug 2 2011 at 9:16am
John Williams System wide hotkeys are setup in LinkStash, so you can have the same hotkey to use in all browsers. There's a single bookmark file for all browsers. If you wanted to have different bookmark files you could do that I suppose (not sure how that would work without more thought), but LinkStash is designed to work with one. LinkStash can also bookmark documents, not just URLs, but won't know a specific location within a document. It will open the document with the associated program.
XRayz Software Vendor - Aug 2 2011 at 11:15am
John Williams LinkStash will be updated to support Chrome 13.x - it works with Chrome 12.x but they have made changes in v13 that prevents LinkStash from bookmarking URLs. Version 13 has just been released (as stable code) so that is why you may notice it not working if you upgraded to Chrome 13.
XRayz Software Vendor - Aug 2 2011 at 11:20am
John Williams Firefox keywords are not part of LinkStash. But what you would do is add the keyword to LinkStash bookmark property, either in a comment or a tag and then you can search on that. It has search as you type, so it's nice to use. Then hit enter to open the page in FF (assuming that is the browser you have set as your preferred browser.) You may have to hit tab first to select the bookmark. Conveniently you can set LinkStash, so when the LinkStash window is opened (by a hotkey for example) you can start typing in the search box immediately.
XRayz Software Vendor - Aug 2 2011 at 11:27am
John Williams LinkStash doesn't use the FF bookmark toolbar, but you can use it to keep some frequently used bookmarks, or for whatever purpose you like - it won't interfere with LinkStash.
XRayz Software Vendor - Aug 2 2011 at 11:30am
John Williams To all Chrome users, I just want to let you know that LinkStash is now working with Chrome 13 (released today I believe?) and a LinkStash update will be available shortly.
XRayz Software Vendor - Aug 2 2011 at 12:21pm
James Kenney Can you have it save it's database in a (for example) dropbox folder so that every machine you have will share the same bookmark file?
Aug 2 2011 at 2:14pm
John Williams James, you can, but the *current* release won't update/reload the bookmark file when it has been changed by another computer. You'd have to manually reload it. If you ask will this feature (auto reload a changed bookmark file e.g. by another computer via dropbox) be in a future release, 100% yes.
XRayz Software Vendor - Aug 2 2011 at 4:06pm
Charlie N Exciting product! I have two questions:

1. Will the Chrome 13 interface and Firefox sync be part of version 2.x so they are included in this purchase?

2. I just did a fast review but is there a way to have the default be to "open in a new TAB" rather than a new Window? Too many windows the way I browse.

Thanks!
Aug 2 2011 at 4:12pm
John Williams Charlie, the fix for Chrome 13 will be in a maintenance release which will be v2 - so free. I doubt FF sync, should it be added, will be in v2. Regarding tabs, there should be an option in the browser, to open pages from external apps either in a new tab or new window, my guess is it's set to new window.
XRayz Software Vendor - Aug 2 2011 at 4:24pm
Charlie N Thanks for the prompt response, John.

I can get the bookmarks to either open in a new window or replace the current window (IE) but not in a new tab. Can you be more specific?

I have set IE to open in a new tab and i have unclicked the open in new window in LinkStash.
Aug 2 2011 at 4:49pm
John Williams Charlie, see if my settings help... select "always open bookmark in new window" in LinkStash|options|browser. Next set IE9 options|tabs to "let IE decide how popups should open" - this works for me, should do for you I hope.
XRayz Software Vendor - Aug 2 2011 at 5:06pm
Roger Thomasson Pause for a round of applause...

Thanks to John for going above and beyond in this conversation thread!

bvssunnydale Can this, by any chance, import PowerMarks files - or would you know of a way to accomplish this? (I have over 10K links in PM..). Thanks.
Aug 2 2011 at 6:43pm
VLM Hi John, and I agree with the expressions of appreciation, from above. You really have gone above and beyond today!

I would like to pursue the Firefox keywords discussion from above just a bit further, if you are willing (and when you awaken :):) I've already processed my purchase of 5 million licenses, so there is no issue about when the deal ends, and you should have adequate funding to continue in business through at least this coming Friday.

If I understand correctly, it would go something like this:

1. Enter hotkey to activate LinkStash/bring it to foreground.
2. Begin typing the keyword.
3. When LinkStash has enough to identify the desired link uniquely (which in my case may often be the entire keyword string), click or enter a hotkey to select that link, and it will open automagically in a new tab in FF (assuming the correct settings, as you have described above).

That's it, if I understand correctly, and assuming all the correct config settings to support that series of actions are in place ... correct?

If yes, then this is good, because it matches well what I would have to do now in FF:

1. hotkey to select the URL bar
2. type keyword (must be exact)
3. press "enter"

This seems roughly similar to me. Do you agree, or am I missing something, such as an extra step with LinkStash that I might like to know about?

TIA!!!
Aug 2 2011 at 6:50pm
RM Thank you for this software product and the discount! I've been using it now for only an hour and I already love the features!
Aug 2 2011 at 9:45pm
John Williams Wm Shore, I elieve you can export PowerMarks as HTML or IE Favorites then import them to LinkStash.
XRayz Software Vendor - Aug 4 2011 at 6:04am
John Williams Following on from the FF keywords topic, yes you have got that right, 1) hotkey for LinkStash 2) type the phrase/keyword 3) click the bookmark to open it in FF, or if you want to use the keyboard you'd have to Tab to the results pane and press Enter. That last bit (hitting tab) is the only difference.

But you know, I think I will add to the todo list "pressing enter in the search box opens the selected bookmark."

Make sure "find box gets focus when main window activated" is selected in LinkStash|options|advanced. This is so you don't have to click the find box and can start typing into it immediately.
XRayz Software Vendor - Aug 4 2011 at 6:14am
John Williams The encryption for the whole bookmark file is needed only once when it's opened. It encrypts everything in the file: page titles, commetns etc..

In *addtion* to whole file encryption, LinkStash manages website passwords. The password fields for websites stored in the bookmark file are encrypted, access to the bookmark password is via a master password, and we call this "signing-in", you stay signed in uintil either of these, you choose at the sign-in stage:

- screen saver activation
- a specific duration (e.g. 5 minutes)

You can set security levesl for each bookmark's password to override the sign-in settings:

- no security: need not be signed in
- low security: need to be signed in (you'll be prompted if needed)
- high security: always need to sign in (even if already signed in)
XRayz Software Vendor - Aug 4 2011 at 6:28am
John Williams RM, glad you love it!
XRayz Software Vendor - Aug 4 2011 at 6:34am
VLM Thanks John ... and I like this idea:

But you know, I think I will add to the todo list "pressing enter in the search box opens the selected bookmark."

Eliminating keystrokes is almost always desirable. :):)
___
Regarding passwords, if I read this correctly, you're politely suggesting that LinkStash is an alternative to RoboForm for PWD management, correct? If "yes", then can one import from RF?

I particularly like the no/low/high options, very nice idea.
___
Regarding password timeout, may I suggest adding timeout options for standby, hibernation, and logout. Some people (like me :) never use a screensaver, always use standby instead. Energy-conscious and all that. :)
Aug 4 2011 at 7:03am
John Williams This has been added (enter in search box) and working fine so far in my test build. It will be included in the maintenance release due soon.

Roboform will do much more than LinkStash when it comes to forms, but yes for basic info: user name, password (and one custom field) it works great.

Added the other timeouts to my list - thanks. Maybe for now have a dummy screen saver set to "blank" (so no CPU use) that is set to trigger a few minutes before the standby.
XRayz Software Vendor - Aug 4 2011 at 9:40am
Eduardo Amado Too late for me. Could you John extend the offer for 1 more day? Thanks.
Aug 4 2011 at 11:31am
VLM John, you are SO receptive to suggestions, I feel very grateful for that!!

John Williams Thanks The Presiding Emissary for Vibrant Living Ministries and Successors - that's a very long name.
XRayz Software Vendor - Aug 5 2011 at 6:41am
VLM Well John, it's the name of the ministry in which I serve. My name is much shorter! But whenever I act in my capacity in the ministry, I use that name, then inscribe my own name beneath, where needed. It's one of those law things ! :):)
Aug 5 2011 at 7:12am
Stuart Henderson Just wanted to add here that I really needed a bookmark manager that could cope elegantly with intranet/internet URLs as well as file system endpoints.

Not being able to wait any longer for this to come up in BDJ I ended up getting a copy via the website.

Man! This is really really good software. Does exactly what I need just the way I want it to. This will save me loads of time and will pay for itself in a week. Can't recommend it highly enough!
