Stefan Hauber Being a newbie in the usage of virtualization, I have some questions:

1) I have some old computers with different hardware and OS (e.g. Desktop, Win95, Pentium1). Is it possible to transfer their boot-harddisk to my Laptop (XP) as virtual OS and can I expect it would run, despite this hardware-differences (or do I have to reinstall (e.g.) Win95 on my Laptop)?

2) I am thinking about having a secure computer-setup with no risk of a internet-virus-infection. Especially for someone who is not familiar with this computer-technology and who wants not to learn too much about computing and use it just a tool for specific tasks. Having this, no internet-access would be possible at all. Now the idea is to allow internet-access (only) over an additional virtual OS-instance. After the session is closed, I would like to overwrite the changed virtual-file by a former backuped copy, so that everytime a user starts this internet-virutal-file he gets a fresh system. Problem is: Sometimes it's desireable to download a file or save a web-page to somewhere outside this not-persistent sandbox. In my idea, everytime a access to the outside should be done, the user should be explicitely be asked for his allowance, because this is quite risky. Is such a configuration/behaviour possible?

3) Some hardware-components have an unique id-number. Can these id's been set to an explicit value in a virtual file?

4) When buing win7 this year, is it possible to run my current XP-system on it? As far as I know Win7-Ultimate supports this, but I'll (most probable) have the Ultimate-version and additional it requires a certain hardware to do so? So, do your software require also certain a certain hardware/processor?

Thanks a lot...

Guy Good To Stefan Hauber (Visitor)

You may wish to take a look at a couple of the Sandboxing type utilities to do what you described in item two. They don't do as much as a virtualization product, but it may help you.

Here are a couple Sandbox tools with freeware pieces.

Paragon Software Actually the lowest OS you can virtualize with Virtualization Manager 2010 is Windows 2000 Professional.
Other old OSes such as Windows 95/98/ME and NT are not supported.

Paragon Software Hello Maybe Buyer, version 2010 has general bigfixing, and we added support of VirtualBox and "Connect VD" feature (it allows to connect virtual disk to a computer). This product doesn't work with Acronis files.
