Tom Tellas Bummer,

I should have waited.

Just received an order I placed a fabout 4 weeks back,
from nothingbutsoftware.

It was for 5 separate OEM license of version 6, to load on home pc's. [ I build and/or upgrade a lot of system].

The only "new" features/differences I discovered ,
(between Powerdesk V6 and V7), are mentioned at:

http://www.avanquest.com/...Fc-w#sec_2
mentioned anywhere were:

---------------------- [quote]--------------------------------
What's new in version 7?

*

Vista Ready!
Now you can use your favorite desktop utility on the new Windows Vista.
*

Hex Editor
PowerDesk's hex editor feature gives you all the power to deal with binary data. By using a hex editor, a user can see and edit the raw data of the file as opposed to the intrepration of the same file within a software application. Get the power and flexibility to alter a file exactly way you want.
*

Transfer Notes Field
As you create notes for files within PowerDesk, they now remain attached to the file regardless if you move the file to another location.
*

Image Toolbar Items
PowerDesk's improved image toolbar makes it easy to scroll and preview hundreds of images and includes useful features such as auto-rotation of images.

---------------------- [un-quote]--------------------------------

If anyone has never used any version, Powerdesk, you should give it a try.

Regardless if it is V6 or V7:

-You regain your "split screen" views, such as horizontal, or vertical.
-You get a built-in compression package. Allowing you to double-click a zip file and powerdesk will open it. It will show you the files within the zip file.
- a built-in FTP package
- synchprogram, to synch up files.
- size manager - visual indications of files, according to size.

Software Guy What are the restrictions of your EULA? can I install on only 1 machine, or desktop plus laptop, or on desktop plus laptop plus netbook? Thanks!

Jean-Marie User I have bought all the version since Powerdesk98, but this useful software is presently full of bug. Permanent Conflict with Explorer. Be ready to stop Explorer and restart it a few times a day with the task manager. Folder Synchroniser is useful but a lot of error if you work with other programs at the same time. Useful but a nightmare...
Same kind of problems of differents computers with Powerdesk 5, 6 and 7. Avanquest do not solve the problems, no real improvement since a long time. Just a cash cow for Avanquest, no development.

PowerDesk is a joke Jean-Marie Delobelle is right. I used to love using Powerdesk Pro... before it was resold several times and development all but abandoned. Bugs that have existed for years have not been addressed.

I guess it's great for those that might be still be running Windows 2000 or something... but there are free alternatives that are more stable and have 100% of their functions working properly. I wouldn't install and run this program on a modern system if I were paid to do so--it's that poor.

Sam Cal I've bought and used previous versions and it worked well. I have no reason to complain. However, I always found myself going back to Total Commander (previously known as Windows Commander), which does everything here and way more. Plus Total Commander is constantly expanded and upgraded by a HUGE international user community, and is has a very tiny footprint.

No disrespect to PowerDesk intended - the previous versions I used were nice. Just sharing an opinon.

Gene Zipperlen Your link and redirect sends me to a 404 not found page. I really want to buy 2 or maybe 3 licenses for Powerdesk Pro 7 at this price but fear the deadline may run out before I can take advantage of it.

Steven Avery Hi Folks,

PowerDesk was my first file manager, after X-Tree ! .. It was a very good program back then, yet as others have pointed out it basically went through many hands and simply became a side cash-cow for a heavy web and mass-marketeer, Avanquest.

Avanquest is "ok" (afaik they are NOT one of the many shamware promoters, Web of Trust gives then a good rating, note they do send you a lot of emails rotating products ). Really, my view is that they are not the type of company for Bits, which works best with small, nimble companies where you can actually communicate with the programmers and developers. Avanquest has a gazillion marketing methods already.

Ok, this last comment about types of companies is more for the forum, personally I am more than happy with Free Commander (freeware) and Total Commander (shareware) - where the development is active and responsive.

Shalom,
Steven Avery

Joe Hartman Agree with Jean-Marie Delobelle. This used to be one great product but now it is basically useless due to the bugs.

Patrick N firstly i have nothing against this product nore avanquest and i hope it's fine to mention competetive products here.

filemanagers is one of thoose items used on everyday basis
alternatively there is directory opus, although bit pricey but i have no regrets whatsoever purchasing it,
quite the opposite i found directory opus to be one of the most valuable items ever purchased,
besides being an superior filemanager i've been able to remove countless of third party applications from my pc hence dopus is just so feature rich.

as an bonus:
there is an userfriendly community forum occupied with greater minds, usually updated daily with great tips & tricks.
found here: http://resource.dopus.com/

dopus does not present numerous of bugs & or\if any bugs they're usually fixed promptly

cheers =)

James Evans Like Steven Avery, I started with X-Tree then Powerdesk produced by VCOM software; it was excellent then! After Powerdesk (VCOM) was sold, de-bugging of Powerdesk upgrade versions appeared to slow. One of Avanquest's products, a hard disk manager, made my computer un-bootable but to the good side, Avanquest did refund my money. I had to reload Windows XP and all programs and data. I purchased Paragon's Hard Disk Suite and found it to be very good. Avanquest is a superbly successful Marketer of numerous products. Personally, I would be willing to try other Avanquest products if they would make Powerdesk the un-buggy product it used to be.

Luis D'Souza PowerDesk Pro was an excellent program until just before Windows VISTA operating came into existance. Since than it does not function as it used to. Useless and problematic for For Windows 7.
