SoftPerfect RAM Disk

Faster Performance, Longer Hard Drive Life

As your hard drive fills up, your computer's performance goes down! Little bits of data start getting put into all of the nooks and crannies of available space, resulting in more fragmentation, and making your hard drive work even harder -- possibly towards premature failure. And yet most of the time, a large portion of your PC's RAM sits unused, calm, cool, and collected, on the sidelines.

It's high time you put that RAM to work!

SoftPerfect RAM Disk lets you set up disks on your computer that are entirely stored in memory. What does this mean? Data speeds that far exceed any physical hard disk. Better performance. Longer hard drive life!

With SoftPerfect RAM Disk, you can even set up a virtual RAM disk to handle all of those files that Windows and applications use for temporary data storage. You know, all of those little bits that get dumped to your hard drive during an installation, or that get accumulated during web browsing.

Need to access your virtual RAM data between sessions? Set it up with an associated on-disk image -- the virtual RAM drive reads from it once, writes to it once, and all of the read/write work that happens in the middle is VIRTUAL.

SoftPerfect RAM Disk lets you create any number of virtual RAM drives and is only limited by the available memory on your system, and boasting sizes of 3.5GB on 32-bit systems to a whopping UNLIMITED on 64-bit systems!

Jorge Watanabe Hi,
Does this app use RAM above 3.5GB in 32-bit systems?
Thank you and regards,
Apr 10 at 5:07am
Andrew Lock No, it does not. In order to utilise 3.5GB it requires a 64-bit system.
SoftPerfect Research Vendor - Apr 10 at 5:55am
Cheryl Rutherford Awesome. Can't wait for the deal.
Apr 10 at 9:54am
Jean Sibe How is performance with comparing to other competitors?
Any benchmark available, for example with Crystal Disk Mark?
Apr 12 at 7:36am
Andrew Lock Sorry, I am afraid I haven't seen any recent benchmarks.

Chaim Krause """Please note that one license grants the purchaser rights to install and use the software on one computer only. In order to use the software on several computers simultaneously, the purchaser must acquire several licenses. If you have any questions regarding purchasing or licensing, please e-mail us at sales@softperfect.com."""

Deal breaker for me on a home license.

I'll stick with the alternative:

"""Subject to the terms below, you are hereby licensed to use this software for personal or use without charge to create up to a 4 GB RAMDisk. If you use this software for commercial use, or wish to create larger disks, registration is required."""

http://memory.dataram.com...re/ramdisk

P.S. For the record, this week my boss just spent $2,000 buying licenses for software that I wish use in the office. All of which, I have personal licenses for -- at about 25% of that cost. Why did the my boss by that software? Because I use it at home and am familiar with it.
Apr 13 at 4:05am
VLM Chaim Krause - What's the alternative to which you refer? DataRam?
Apr 13 at 7:11am
Chaim Krause @VLM, Yes. That's what I currently use on my personal/home computers. It works well. All that you need to "deal with" is an complete acceptable splash screen advertisement to buy ram from them. I understand why they do that.

@All, I have downloaded the SoftPerfect product and am going to test it out. Although I am still uncomfortable with the license terms, I do now see that the product has some nice features not available in the DataRam software. Namely, mounting as removable media, creating multiple folders at startup, and wiping the memory after dismounting the drive. Also there are some "nice touches" like a menu option to set the environment's TEMP folder.
Apr 13 at 7:21am
VLM What does the "persistent" option do?
Apr 13 at 7:27am
Chaim Krause @VLM: P (persistent). The disk's content will be saved to the associated image file upon shutdown.
Apr 13 at 7:30am
VLM Chaim Krause - Thank you!

Cheryl Rutherford I tried to purchase this just now, but it does not allow me to pay via PAYPAL, which I will NOT buy anything without it. I cannot just give my CC info directly on a website. SORRY. I would have purchased it otherwise.

Any chance you could add PayPal. I am willing to pay the PP fees to get this.
Apr 13 at 8:13am
John Westbury I keep getting a 'Transaction Processing Error' [ps.gcsip.com] when trying to complete a purchase for this product (using a Credit Card) - which is therefore preventing me from doing so!
Then I thought I'd use PayPal (as the symbol is there) only to find that 'PayPal' is NOT one of the options available in the 'Method of Payment' options!
This isn't terribly helpful, guys!
Apr 13 at 8:17am
Chaim Krause I took some time to take a closer look at this software.

I continue to feel that licensing on the home/personal version is too restrictive. If I buy software for my home use, I expect to be able to use it on all my computers. I don't want to have to deal with licensing restrictions when I am dealing with my game computer, my home office computer, my significant other's computer, my children's computer, my laptop, etc. Having said that, I'm not sure what the "right price" would be for an "unlimited home use" license.

Leaving that aside for the moment, this is the best (modern/recent) RAM disk software I have used. Lots of nice features the others don't have. If you are "paranoind" (the kind of person that erases you browser history and deletes your temp files constantly), the option to wipe the used RAM clean after use, may be useful to you. I like the ability to mount the RAM disk as removable so the OS doesn't waste resource with administrative functions on that disk. The UI makes it easy to administer multiple RAM disks and their associated images. I like the ability to make multiple folders on the drive upon creation. I like the ability to associate and link programs to the RAM disk so you can do things like put PortableApps on it and have it run the start program upon mounting.

The unknowns, because I have only spent an hours with it are: stability, what bugs might exist, how quickly bugs get fixed, how reliable the automatic saving and loading of images are longterm with things like VMs running while doing development work, etc.

Overall, if the licensing doesn't bother you, I suggest purchasing. And, if the licensing does bother you, getting 5 licenses at the discounted price just might be worth it.

I will add that I decided to take a closer look at this product after SoftPerfect contacted me and they gave me the impression they are nice people. :)

I will say that if I do need a commercial license, I would pick SoftPerfect RAM Disk over the less capable Dataram RAMDisk.

If you just want a simple free RAM drive for personal use, get Dataram's software.
Apr 13 at 8:24am
VLM Chaim Krause - That's very helpful, thank you! I bought 2 licenses.
Apr 13 at 8:45am
Rosalind Share I tried to pay via PayPal, but there is no option despite it showing on the pay page. It seems that I will miss this opportunity.
Apr 13 at 9:02am
Jean Sibe Interesting results when comparing to Dataram's RAMDisk. I couldn't believe filesystem has so much difference.

First I created 512MB NTFS with Softperfect.
Crystal Disk Mark results -- all in MB/s and format Read / Write:

Seq: 1128 / 966
512K: 1177 / 1052
4K: 42 / 35
4K QD32: 71 / 67

Then I installed Dataram and created FAT32 since NTFS was not possible. Results -- all in MB/s and format Read / Write:

Seq: 1220 / 1253
512K: 1166 / 1059
4K: 33 / 31
4K QD32: 38 / 32

There was quite huge difference so I decided to take one final take with Softperfect using FAT32. Results -- all in MB/s and format Read / Write:
Seq: 1410 / 1179
512K: 1219 / 1063
4K: 33 / 31
4K QD32: 67 / 52

So when both ramdisk had FAT32, it boosted Softperfect results a lot, for example seq 1410 vs previous 1220 which means 13,4% boost!

Softperfect seems to be very easy and fast when creating, when I used Dataram it was "Starting RAMDisk..." for about 30 seconds.

I will be buying this deal :)
Apr 13 at 9:49am
VLM Jean Sibe - I'm not familiar with Crystal Disk. Do higher values indicate better performance? And what do the 4 values (Seq, 512I, etc.) mean, if you don't mind explaining briefly?
Apr 13 at 10:08am
Jean Sibe @VLM, yes, it means MB/s, 1,000,000 byte/sec so higher is better.

These are what tests mean:

Seq : Sequential Read/Write Test (Block Size = 1024KB)
512K : Random Read/Write Test (Block Size = 512KB)
4K : Random Read/Write Test (Block Size = 4KB)
4K QD32 : Random Read/Write Test (Block Size = 4KB, Queue Depth = 32) for NCQ&AHCI

SoftPerfect Research Vendor - Apr 13 at 4:33pm
VLM Thanks Jean Sibe. It seems SoftPerfect does quite well against DataRam, though it's also true, I think, that DataRam does quite well against no RAM disk at all. yes?

Steven Avery Hi,

There is a lot of comparison of Ramdisk softwares at :

The strengths of the SoftPerfect product may be underrepresented in that discusions, which is mostly about some other softwares.

VLM As I sit here thinking about how best to use this product, I'm struck by the following inquiry.

I have Win 7 x64 running on a 128 GB SSD. Completely aside from any performance gain that I might realize by using a RAM disk, would it not also be the case that by putting temp files and perhaps other "system stuff" (my ignorance about what to include :) onto a RAM disk, I will save significantly, over time, on wear and tear on the SSD?

I mean, for someone running the OS on an SSD, is this a significant justification for buying this (or similar) product, independent of any justification based upon performance gains one might realize?

Thanks all!
Apr 13 at 7:50pm
David Powelstock @VLM: a lot of folks (including me) use RAM disks in this way. See this site, which also has some other great tips for SSD users: http://bit.ly/IjK9Qk. The idea is to configure Windows to use the RAM disk for TMP and TEMP files. (If you do this, I advise you to make the RAM disk persistent, i.e. set it up so that the RAM disk image is saved when you shut down and reloaded when you start up. The reason for this is that certain installation programs that require a reboot will put files it needs upon reboot in the TEMP directory. If they're not their, installation will fail.) The other tip is to configure your browser to put its cache directory on the RAM disk.

Michael R. Is there a way to start the RAM Disk at window startup WITHOUT having a window opened?

I have the checkbox 'Show icon in the system tray' checked, but this does not prevent the window to be shown.

An answer would be appreciated, even if it would be after the offer has expired. Thanks a lot...
Apr 13 at 9:41pm
Andrew Lock @Michael, normally the RAM disk starts automatically.

If you want to start it manually without showing the window, launch it with the command line /hide as "ramdiskws.exe /hide"

Reading here and there, I am in.

Incidentally , the SoftPerfect freeware is highly regarded, for example 4Sysops puts the Network Scanner in among the "Top ten free admin tools".
