JMJ Squared Great Product which I've used since Version 15 and am now on Version 19. Though not a replacement for, It's a nice addition to Photoshop and PaintShop, especially for playing with line art. My DeviantArt-fanatic Son loves it... and I love that I didn't have to spring for another Photoshop license. ;)

Ken Buchholz Great program but... it changes the desktop color scheme back to Windows 7 Basic while the program is active. Surprised this hasn't been fixed yet.
Jul 26 2013 at 7:49am Copy Link
Ken Carlino @Ken, thank you for the feedback. Yes the switching of color scheme is expected and controlled by Windows and does not impact the proper functioning of TwistedBrush, Windows or other programs. Later versions of TwistedBrush Pro Studio has addressed that issue.

Kenneth Bates I downloaded the same version on GiveawayOfTheDay (GOTD) a few months ago. Whilst I haven't found much use for it, I thought I would bring my previous version up to date, so I un-installed it and re-installed using today's BDJ offer. However, I cannot register the program as instructed, because there is no "Create Account" button. When I check in Help/About I found that it still shows a registration to GOTD.

JMJ Squared @Ken Carlino - In Pro Version 19.11, for example, is there a way to dock panels (Layers, Brush Control, etc.) AND to have that window/workspace persist across exit/restarting TwistedBrush?

Thanks for a great, fun Product.
Jul 26 2013 at 11:19am Copy Link
Free Ride There were so many new versions after 17.x released, i already have 17.28 from an earlier BDJ-promotion (09/2012) and therefor will pass, i mean 17.28 is from 02/2011, now we have 2013, every old (or outdated) software you install on your computer can be a extra security risk and that being said, a more improved version that represents at least parts of the newest builds wouldn't hurt, maybe with some features reduced? So many fixes, changes and improvements have been made, we speak from 38 version numbers difference compared to the newest build, that is - regarding softwares - a quantum jump in all directions. I look forward to see maybe a v18 in the future that may make it into promotion, with some of the new features, improvements and changes, like e.g. the color scheme issue of Windows. And for the version numbers, i hope you Ken will see it as a compliment. :D
Jul 26 2013 at 11:20am Copy Link
JMJ Squared @Ken Carlino - Is there a way to dock panels, e.g., Brush Control, Layers, etc., and save that workspace/windows as a default?

Thanks for a great, fun Product.
Jul 26 2013 at 11:20am Copy Link
Ken Carlino @Kenneth - TwistedBrush will remember your previous license information until you enter a new license. That can be done from the file menu. File | Enter License Key.
Pixarra - Jul 26 2013 at 11:54am Copy Link
Ken Carlino @JMJ - There isn't a docking system for every panel, just for the primary panels, brush shortcuts, brush modifiers, color adjustments and color palettes.
Pixarra - Jul 26 2013 at 11:55am Copy Link
Ken Carlino @Free - Sure I can see this an a compliment. That said version 17 is a very complete package and such is still actively promoted and sold by Pixarra. Thanks for the feedback!

H. H. As registered customer since Version 2.3 I highly can recommend this Software especially for creative painting,... The more Pixarra TwistedBrush has been developed the less I used Corel Painter and Photoshop for creative painting techniques, TwistedBrush is much more versatile with all the inbuilt brushes. It also has lots of Image editing features (filters,...) and also allows many other creative Image "compositions" (you may look at the user Gallery)

People should not be disappointed that it is "only" Version 17.28 which is offered for free. Even that Version has great capabilities, you propably won´t find in other graphic Software. My personal advice: Grab the free Version 17.28 at bdj, and if you like it - support the developer by purchasing the latest Version - I didn´t find any other Commercial graphic Software with such a good value for money
To my opinion - regarding the great possibilities of the software - TwistedBrush has a very moderate price and fair license policy, and a developer being in close touch with the users (forum, many features requested have been integrated over the time)
For easier "discovering" ot the great capabilities looking at the tutorials and Video introduction is recoommended since the user Interface may seem a little uncommon at the first glance.

Jann Martin I downloaded it, and then ran it. It asked for registration key, I put that in, then nothing. I double-clicked on the icon on the desktop, it looked like it was going to open, then nothing. I am trying to run this on Windows 8 in desktop mode. It appears it does not work with Windows 8. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am trying to run it on a Fujitsu Liifebook T5010 tablet convertible notebook. Has anyone gotten this to work with Windows 8 yet? Any help is appreciated.
Jul 26 2013 at 3:54pm Copy Link
adamsdaddy Running Win 8 64 bit standard user. Ran the install but the program never came up. No desktop ICON no entry in Programs. I browsed over to x86 Program files, clicked on tbrush.exe entered the registration name and code and up it comes.

Not a big deal - just odd. Most programs ask to create desktop icons and entries in the Start Menu.

I'll play with it later.
Jul 26 2013 at 4:15pm Copy Link
Jann Martin My laptop is Win 8 32-bit and am using an administrator user account already, so the program is already in the X86 folder, and it won't run no matter what I do. Anyone else having this issue on 38-bit Windows 8?
Jul 26 2013 at 4:32pm Copy Link
Ken Carlino @Jann - In this kind of situation it commonly is some other program preventing the normal start of TwistedBrush. Virus scanner, registry protector and desktop replacements are common culprits. You can try to start Windows in Safe Mode to see if that works. If it does, then you can narrow things down from there.
Pixarra - Jul 26 2013 at 5:45pm Copy Link
Jann Martin Thank you Ken, I will try that. I didn't know there was a safe mode in Windows 8. I guess I have some reading to do.
Jul 26 2013 at 5:50pm Copy Link
adamsdaddy Jann,

Did you try running the executable file directly from the x86 folder?

C:\Program Files (x86)\Pixarra\TwistedBrush\tbrush.exe
Jul 26 2013 at 6:04pm Copy Link
Jann Martin Yes, I tried that as well. Also still working on the safe mode narrowing down what could be causing it. No luck yet.

Running Windows Defender alongside Malwarebytes and have disabled both of those and still have the problem.

I'm really not running much besides the Fujitsu utilities that are windows 8 compatible, and Microsoft Office 2013 Pro, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver and the rest of the tools from CS5 (all updates).
Jul 26 2013 at 6:59pm Copy Link
JMJ Squared Jann - This offer installed fine on my Window 8 64-bit machine WITH security software enabled. May I suggest that you uninstall TwistedBrush, reboot and reinstall from the Admin Account you're now using AND when running the installer, RIGHT CLICK and choose RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR. Temporarily disabling all security software can't hurt.

It may also help to check System Files' integrity before doing the above, by opening an elevated Command Prompt and typing: sfc /scannow and the clicking ENTER. It will take a few minutes to complete, perhaps 30 - 60 minutes. Reboot and proceed as above.

Good luck.
Jul 26 2013 at 7:29pm Copy Link
Jann Martin Thanks JMJ Squared. I have tried all. No error messages no nothing. Its not going to run on my system. This is a new clean install of Windows 8 on a new hard drive. This program is the only one downloaded except the drivers over at Fujitsu's website and these are all Windows 8 drivers. Any apps that were not Windows 8 certified were not downloaded or installed from Fujitsu. No 3rd party apps at all except for this download today. Thanks for everyone who tried to help. I just uninstalled this for the 5th time and tried everything suggested and more to no avail. I'll stick to Illustrator and photoshop as they both work on the system with no problem.
Jul 26 2013 at 7:37pm Copy Link
JMJ Squared Sorry to hear that, Jann. One last longshot may be to run TwistedBrush in Compatibility Mode until you get to the source of the problem. I can assure you that, as good as Illustrator and Photoshop are, you'll find this adds a lot to your tool kit and in many ways is easier to use... for free today.
Jul 26 2013 at 8:23pm Copy Link
Jann Martin Thanks JMJ Squared. I did try that before I even tried the safe mode method. I ran the compatibility troubleshooter and then tested it in every mode from Windows 7 backwards...I got the same results with each mode. I have a couple more laptops, but none that are tablet, I may try one of those tomorrow, but I really wanted it to work on the tablet that I use most often for drawing. Anyway, thanks for your ideas. There were tried and appreciated...they just didn't work for me.
Jul 26 2013 at 9:33pm Copy Link
Ken Carlino @Jann - You may want to scan over the FAQs at
Also if you are running a tablet PC you may want to see if there is any relation to the windows Input Panel. That is described in the FAQ as well.

Quill Pen Awesome program, awesome versatility, and much like Photoshop, awesomely unintutive so get this while you can (especially if you love Dogwaffle's Particles) but before you become totally intimidated and overwhelmed by the bazillion options it offers, run don't walk to all the tutorials on Youtube and spend a day PLAYING with the options! Did I mention this program is awesome?
The cloning tut posted at the top of this comments section is a very good example of just one thing you can do once you learn to navigate this software. Just the ability to quickly turn on/off a trace image (shown at about 3 minutes into the above referenced tut) opens up a world of possibilities.

Quill Pen @Kassidy - I'd submit a new order before you miss out!
Bits' email acknowledgment arrived before I opened my email inbox.
The subject line is:
BitsDuJour Software Receipt - TwistedBrush Pro Studio 17
It provided both the download link (blue text)
the Registration Information in a yellow box just below the download link.
Just copy/paste that key to the hidden registration pop up (found at the bottom of FILE > ENTER LICENSE KEY rather than on the HELP menu)
I did discover that installing this version even to a separate directory overwrites the registration for the version offered earlier this year by another great freebie site - - and while I would have preferred that NOT happening just in case something went awry, c'est la free.
One thing I think is particularly ANNOYING is that the license key is not retained or at least is not displayed if you go back and open that "enter license key" tab again. It's not there(!!) so how the heck are we supposed to know if it's still a licensed copy? I feel obliged to enter it again, and again and again. That's almost as annoying and worrisome as GOTD's bizarre and often ephemeral security wrapper. Yes, I know Help/About shows it's licensed. So remove the license tab, don't erase the key!

Marie atoz Thank you for extending another day. I have this from giveaway and the kids use it to learn.

I am trying to find a reasonable priced Win 7 pro full retail (not oem etc) to install becuase I still have XP. I have been looking for long time but once I do - I will lose alot of the apps I have for the kids as well as for rest of family.

So I am very pleased to be able to get TwistedBrush for free today. I will be able to re-install to my pc again when I need to.
Jul 27 2013 at 2:12pm Copy Link
Ken Carlino @Mark - This sounds like a privilege issue on your Windows system. You can try to run TwistedBrush as administrator.
Pixarra - Jul 27 2013 at 2:22pm Copy Link
Mark Bryan Ah ha, thanks, that worked. I right-clicked the icon on my desktop and selected properties, then the compatibility tab. I checked the Run this program as an administrator box.
Looks good, wow it looks like real paint!

Marie atoz Oh, I do not have a problem with this fantastic program. I was only saying we have it and have been using it (from Giveaway day site). Yet once I purchase Windows 7 pro - most of everything I have now - will have to be RE-installed - thus many programs we have will not be able to redo. I will be able to install TwistedBrush once OS is changed using this free offer.

rodken I use Photoshop almost everyday!
If you are looking for a Graphic software that is of the highest quality and don't need the newer tools that PS offers then get this now! or better yet buy their Ver 19 because this is great software at possibly the best price! Corel is great too but doesn't offer the default brushes TB does (unless you spend the time creating them)!
If you are into Graphic Design then you should already have PS, Corel GS and THIS (Twisted Brush) because they are all very useful at times in their own way and the latter is so cheap and of such high quality it would be a disgrace to not buy it (or at least try this one out)!

Anyways great giveaway! Version 17 is still of high quality, and is amazing to get for free!

James K @Marie atoz

The difference between this place and GOTD is that GOTD is giving away the software, and uses it's own installer that is only good for 1 day. Meaning if you want or need to reinstall it, tough nuggies.

BDJ on the other hand is SELLING you a product for $0, and gives you registration codes. Meaning that you should be able to install it as many times as you need to. As long as the developer doesn't limit the number of installs 1 license can have.

So, for instance, my Windows computer is having some problems, but I wanted this product anyway. So I downloaded it onto my Linux box until I have my W7 computer straightened out. I don't expect to have any trouble installing it.

I cannot even attempt this sort of thing with GOTD software, as the first thing it checks is the date!
Jul 28 2013 at 3:48pm Copy Link
Marie atoz Thank you James K for explaining more on GOTD & BDJ apps. We are thrilled the developer & BDJ extended the free download for TB as I was not able to be online to get it the 1st day. Now we will be able to cont to enjoy TB even when we change our OS.
Jul 28 2013 at 4:42pm Copy Link
JMJ Squared @James K @Marie atoz - The information you are discussing is NOT accurate. While some BitsDuJour offerings, indeed, are not install-time limited, many others are. A quick glance through my records indicate some offers must be installed the same day of the free offer, while other install windows vary from 3 days to 30 days; e.g., AtomicAlarm Clock, Debenu PDF, Kryptel Standard.
Jul 28 2013 at 5:19pm Copy Link
James K @JMJ^2, I did not know that. I've never run into that sort of limitation here, though I've been visiting for less than a year, and have been downloading much less than 100% of even the free stuff, so what you say is very possible.

THIS offering, though, should NOT pose any problems with late installation, as under "The Fine Print" it says the following:

+ Each license allows installation on 2 computers, but TwistedBrush Pro Studio 17 may not be used at exactly the same time on each of them.

+ Transfer of a license to another owned computer is allowed.

+ You can install/register the software at any time.

So as long as you don't install it on more than 2 computers at a time, you should not have any issues with "late" installs.
Jul 28 2013 at 6:54pm Copy Link
Roger Thomasson @ James, JMJ

Restrictions like this are rare and ONLY at the publisher's insistence. We figure that install time-limitations are better than no software at all.

Regardless, this is not the place to discuss for obvious reasons - TwistedBrush has no such limitations.

Jul 28 2013 at 9:04pm Copy Link
Marie atoz That helped @ Rodken I will check out the few other apps I have from BDJ and make sure I read the fine print etc. every time (Now that I know exactly where to check it out)
Jul 28 2013 at 11:48pm Copy Link
Roger Thomasson @ Marie, rodken

Yes, we always recommend a careful perusal of the fine print before purchasing. The vast majority of our deals carry no special restrictions, but occasionally there will be an install time-limitation if a publisher insists. Note that this is for our 100% deals only - our regular 24-hour discount deals NEVER carry extra restrictions of any kind.
BitsDuJour Admin - Jul 29 2013 at 10:04am Copy Link
JMJ Squared It seems that one of my comments that actually made it through the censors has caused a bit of consternation. That comment in response to JAMES K was not meant to cast aspersions on BitsDuJour or anyone else; rather it was intended to prevent a fellow Bitster from assuming that ALL software presented here could be installed and/or re-installed at any time, which, simply, is not true.

Specifically, JAMES K mentioned that he intended to install today's offering on a Windows machine after he rebuilt it. While the TwistedBrush Pro Studio 17 offered today has no installation time limit, other software offered here does. The categorical comment JAMES K made to MARIE ATOZ would lead her mistakenly to believe that ALL BitsDuJOur offerings are the same. She said so herself.

Ken Carlino, developer of TwistedBrush, is about as non-restrictive, user friendly and customer-centric as you can get. Even a cursory visit to his website and forums will confirm that. Of course, not all developers are the same nor are they required to be.

BitsDuJour is a good site that I frequent and appreciate. The fact I shared does not diminish those equally true facts.

I hope this comment makes it past the censors.
Jul 29 2013 at 10:37am Copy Link
Roger Thomasson @ JMJ

No worries! Your original comment was on point - we don't want our customers to miss out on great software simply because they were unaware of install time-restrictions.

We just want to make sure people understand that it's actually a relatively rare thing :)

All good!
