Ken Carlino Unfortunately virus scanners are often too aggressive in their protection and report false positives.

You can submit the file in question to the virustotal.com website to have it checked against most known virus scanners.

Once you are happy that the file on your system is OK you can adjust your virus scanner to accept it.

Additionally as a user of the anti-virus software you can submit your findings to the company as a false position so they can make corrections to their software or virus definitions.

Ken Carlino Hi Arturas, it looks like it is current. Most scanners were updated on Sept 1, 2012 with a couple last updated on Aug. 31, 2012. It has always looked up to date when I have used the service.

Also note the TwistedBrush Pro Studio 17 installation package has been in use for 2 years with no changes.

Ken Carlino Good question, but it really depends on what's important to you as a user. Version 18 added 235 additions, improvements and fixes, so far version 19 has added 125. The full revision history is available here

Morten Hjollo I'm quite dissappointed that TwistedBrush Pro Studio 17 is not compatible with Windows 7. When I start the program Windows pop up with the messge that this program is not compatible with Win7 and sets Windows 7 Home back to Windows 7 Basic. It's quite dull....

Morten Hjollo I have Win7 64Bit Norwegian, and I've tried re installing, compability modus and so on. Still don't work with all graphic features of Win7. I also found out after uninstalling that this program leaves behind a lot of crap in the registry that I manually had to delete. In the program folder there was a lot of new folders and so on. Malwarebytes pro also came up with a warning. To me this program also looks like something from early XP days. Sorry, but this was not a good experience for me. Thanx anyway.

ron r I also have malwarebytes (pro version) and Microsoft Security Essentials. I had no false-positives.
I can't comment on the un-install traces, maybe it's not 100% clean.

On a side note: I use cameyo to create portable apps which creates portable versions which do not interact with the OS-system files.
Or sometimes I move/copy the installation of a program to a seperate partition then I uninstall the program and test if the copied version works. If it works I can avoid the installer and possibly avoid some system "contamination" which comes when using the installer.

carl thorpe I have used and thoroughly enjoyed the free versions of Twisted Brush for years. Thanks for offering this Pro version for free. I am a bit of a painting program addict, and this is certainly a nice addition to the other programs I already have.

The number of brushes is astounding. While a lot of them are gimmicky, there are a lot in there that allow for some "real media" work. Be sure to check out the "working with brushes" section of the quick start guide to learn how to access them all.

The interface is very strange and could definitely stand to be updated to a more modern look. This can make it hard to work with the program, so you will likely need to refer to the quick start guide quite a bit until you figure out the quirks of the interface.

Also, as noted by others, the program forces Windows 7 into "basic" mode. I am on a i5-2320 3.00GHz machine with 8GB of RAM and a Radeon HD 5770 video card with 1GB of video memory, and some of the fancier brushes lag considerably. While that is surprising, those brushes aren't ones that I would likely use all that much so I am not too bothered by it.

Are you offering any discounted upgrade path to the newest version for those of us who take advantage of this free offer?

P C It's not compatible with Windows Vista Aero. Windows automatically downgrades to Windows Vista Basic when TwistedBrush Pro Studio 17 starts. A bit disappointed. Is there any workaround to solve the problem?

Ken Carlino As stated TwistedBrush Pro Studio is compatible with Windows 7 and Windows Vista. Some features that were used in version 17 results in Windows temporarily disabling Aero visual themes. This does not effect the functionality of TwistedBrush Pro Studio. Yes later versions of TwistedBrush Pro Studio do not result in Windows turning off Aero themes.

Morten Hjollo As P C mentions above the program seems not to be compatible with Windows Aero, as I mentioned before (I have Win 7 64Bit). I am therefore (luckily...) not the only person that have this problem. I also wonder how I can move the installation to another location as there are numerous folders and files created in my program folder during installation. I can't remember the names but it was very difficult to figure out what files and folder that belong to TwistedBrush. It not only creates its own folder, but creates different files outside its own installation folder. How come? This is time consuming and there are free altrenatives out there. Maybe not as good as this program, but they don't mess up this much.

Ken Carlino Hi Morten, sorry to hear your experience was not great. The registry entries are only related to the license so that you can uninstall and install without needing to reenter the license each time.

Please see my early response I wrote regarding anti-virus software.

As for the interface style, we have placed priority on paint functionally and the functionally of the interface rather then the style. Interface styles are just that, styles and will appeal to some and not to others therefore we have choose not to change interface style just for the purpose of style. Not an uncommon choice for smaller software vendors when it comes to larger software products.

Ken Carlino Morten, a follow-up to your second comment. You can install to a new location if you like. You are not required to install to any specific location. Manually attempting to copy the installation from one Program folder to another isn't recommended, and I personally would not recommend that approach for any program installation.

Preston Mitchell Ken -- Is Upgrade Price to v19 Available?

Can I install v17 from Bits today...and then upgrade to v19 using the upgrade price offered at your website?

I installed v17 on XP Pro SP3 x32. It works great on XP!

TwistedBrush is impressive.

I would say it is a good alternative to onOne Perfect Photo Suite v5.5 or the Topaz's series of Fx effects software (which are the well-known titles in your software category).

HOWEVER, based on reports of other commenters, I am scared to install on the W7 x64 side of my dual OS PC.

In fact, I will NOT install v17 in W7! I don't care to take chances with my production PC. So...in light of W7 compatibility issues, YOU SHOULD MAKE THE UPGRADE PRICE TO v19 AVAILABLE!

Thank you for introducing us to TB via a free copy of OLD v17.

carl thorpe The incompatibility with Aero is not going to cause any problem with your computer.

All it does is disable the glass effect that Windows Vista and above has.

As soon as you exit the program, the Aero theme re-enables.

Don't let that stop you from using this program.

The only limitation of TwistedBrush Pro Studio on Windows 7 is the expected, controlled and normal disabling of Aero when TwistedBrush states. This is controlled by Windows and part of the OS. Aero is returned when TwistedBrush exits. That said version 19 of TwistedBrush does not have this result.

Little Bear Sorry, but I refuse to use a program that turns off the Aero while running another program. This behavior led to the crash of other programs in the system tray, while the developer claims the functionality of the program is not hurt, the functionality of my computer is. Passing this up.

I would have gladly taken a lighter version of this program for free for the latest version which does not turn off the Aero on the computer.

SHAME SHAME. This program had potential but as I said, turning off the Aero is not acceptable by today's programming standards.

Ken Carlino Hi Little Bear, if you have programs crash as the result of Windows switching out of Aero that is a failure of those programs since switching in and out of Aero is a standard Windows feature. However, I understand your desire to keep what you have running smoothly.

Gina Anderson I downloaded from the purchase page as well, and my key will not work either. I used the info from the email, copy and paste. It says it's invalid. I guess I have to uninstall and redownload from the email? Previous offers work from the purchase page, so it's not unusual to do it this way.

When I installed the download from the purchase site, I had a glitch. I have Win7 64bit, I got a message that the program did not install correctly, and I had the choice to re-install with recommended settings so I did. It does turn off aero, and though I appreciate the offer, I'm a bit miffed that such an old version was released as the freebie. I am not familiar at all with the program, I downloaded because I was curious. I hope the upgrade price is fabulous, or I may uninstall, depending on if I really like it or not. It's annoying to crash other programs while trying the program and messing with my interface. I don't like having old, run-in-compatibility mode software on Win7 :( Especially when I have to uninstall and reinstall the program to get the key to work. :P

Most of the give aways e-mails do not have a
working user name that is valid. Twisted Brush registered name
does not work in the user name to register. The program cannot be activated without a working user name. Most generate a name with a registered name with e-mail address. There is no user name that is valid in the user name to register it.

I understand your need for protection but it's a little to aggressive to work for me.

b) I think there has been at least one time that the download file was specially made for BDJ and the keycode wouldn't work with the original file from the developer's site. When that is case do we always get to see some info about it in the policy tab?

Oke, Pixarra mailed me 3, 4 times for support and that was very polite what Ken did for me. Today my computer was not in the mood and he centainly had not his day. b) As we're getting such huge volume (almost a million dollars worth of free software given away today) we're now hosting the installers, this is to stop the developers sites from slowing to a crawl, which we've had issues with in the past. Miroir Deco Eventually I installed and activated TwistedBrush Pro Studio 1728 without any problem, even if ZoneAlarm said there is a Malicious software iniside the BitsDuJour version and that I have to remove it from my PC.

The problem was not a virus nor a malware, but simply because something in the application is asking my Windows 7 64Bit to turn off Aero visual themes when (and only while) I'm running another program.

Also, as soon as I exit the program, the Aero theme re-enables as usual, and everything else is working as before without any problem.

h warriner Hi folks, I've a problem. When I try to run TB, I get a message that it can not open a "log.txt" file, in the Twistedbrush folder. I've re-installed the program, didn't help. I tried to write a log.txt file in the Twistedbrush folder; it wouldn't let me write the text file.

I am running Vista for Business on a Dell Latitude 830.

I was able to install and run Twisted brush on my friend's Dell Latitude 830, but it was/is running Windows 7.

I need help.

I installed evaluation version 19 in Windows 7 x64. It works perfectly. None of v17's issues happened in W7. HOWEVER, aside from not going to XP to use TB, I see very little difference between my user experience from v17 to v19. Both versions are great.

I tried buying the Upgrade license for v19 at your website. But the cart inserted the FULL price for v19.

Honestly, I rather stick with v17 than pay full price for v19. But it would be nice to use TB in W7. Please consider offering the Upgrade Price to Bits users who installed v17.

Caused me to try TB with 'Run as Administrator'. It worked. This quirk - and I believe it to be a Vista problem - seems strange as the installation was installed with 'Run as Administrator,' too, and that should have cleared any 'privilege' problem in the beginning.

Is there a 'marker or key' on the Twistedbrush folder that I can change to allow all Users access?

Preston Mitchell Ken -- Thank You for Upgrade Price for v19

I must report that v19 works great in W7 x64. It even works from inside a Sandboxie sandbox.

I tested v19 first inside a sandbox before doing a real install in W7...and v19 performed like a champ....not a single issue. So, it is time for the real install.

TB v19 is totally awesome software.

Mike Smith I downloaded and installed TwistedBrush 9/5/2012, the note appeared that the registration code was sent to my email, however
I did not receive the email with the registration code.

You should have also received an email from Pixarra.com today with your registration information. You may want to check your bulk/spam folder to see if it was filtered.

Ken Carlino Hi Robert, sorry missed your question earlier. You can go straight to version 19 when upgrading. No need to install version 17 in that case.
