Type much?

So do we. And let me tell you, sometimes our wrists and elbows feel it. Not to mention everything else on our plate during any particular day.

That's where TypeMate comes in. In a nutshell, TypeMate helps you type less by automating regularly-typed phrases and sentences. It's an intuitive text expander that converts shortcut text into fully formatted phrases or sentences as you type, saving you massive amounts of time over the course of a work week. Plus, if you suffer from repetitive stress injuries (or worry that you are a candidate), TypeMate is a great way to reduce... well... repetition!

TypeMate works in almost any Windows application that can accept text input, including word processors, spreadsheets, web browsers, email programs and more!

TypeMate is currently supplied with both US and UK English dictionaries containing over 110,000 words. English not your first language? No problem -- TypeMate allows you to create your own dictionaries too.

Stuart Henderson How does this work in code editors that provide their own autocompletion? Eg PowerGUI or Primalscript?

Noggin The Nog Easy enough to instal and create a shortcut, but I can get no response from the program when I am working in a document, and there is no help file.

Andrew Laird Stuart Henderson - if you download the trial, you can buy the discounted license on the 7th of May to enable the full version. The autocomplete function is purely optional - you can turn it off - but it should coexist quite happily with any existing autocomplete in applications.

Noggin The Nog - there is a full PDF manual installed with the program in the TypeMate program group in the Start menu. The autocomplete dictionaries (both US and UK) are in the folder where you installed TypeMate. If you are not getting a response when you type a shortcut, try pressing Enter first - this will clear the shortcut buffer in the program.

If anyone is having problems, I recommend reading the manual that is installed with the application - it describes every function step-by-step.

Noggin The Nog Thanks for the pointers.

Unfortunately, the main function for my purposes - the shortcuts to prescribed text - does not function unless I turn off KeyScrambler. This is presumably because KeyScrambler, which is an anti keylogger program, encrypts my keystrokes when I am in a document that is run by an application protected by KeyScrambler, but TypeMate is not such an application and therefore KeyScrambler does not decrypt the keystrokes so that Typemate can read them. This diagnosis is supported by the fact that TypeMate works when I disable KeyScrambler.

Presumably the solution would be for TypeMate to get QFX Software, who publish KeyScrambler, to add TypeMate to their list of protected applications, or to do whatever else is required so that KeyScramber will decrypt for Typemate the keystrokes entered in a protected application such as Word. Then TypeMate should be able to read the shortcuts.

Can you fix this? I intend to continue to use KeyScrambler.

Roberto i have a question. can i send plain text without setting in arial 10 point? sometimes i want to use the same font that i selected before in my editor.

Stuart Henderson I've been using the application this week and agree with Roberto. The shortcuts are probably the best feature for me (as the autocomplete seems to require a bit more than just a tab press if you have multiple choices and you don't want the choice you last selected). The fact that the shortcut meddles with the exisiting formatting of whatever I'm working in is definitely a problem. Can it be switched off? Otherwise all good. Thanks.

Andrew Laird Thanks for your feedback, I agree that the formatting issue is a potential problem. I'll look into getting this changed very soon so that there is an option to switch between formatted and regular text. Hopefully that will then meet everyone's requirements. This product is fairly new and we're still figuring out exactly how everyone uses it and what people want from it. All comments are very much appreciated and will help us to shape the product going forward.

bvssunnydale Hi, I'm using Shortkeys now (and like it very much, but, like anything, isn't perfect (won't do "J" suffixes)] . Does this have suffix ability (where you enter a words shortcut and then can enter a suffix which changes the word to match predefined suffixes, e.g. doc might be the shortcut for 'document', but docs produces 'documents', docj produces 'documentation', docd produces 'documented', etc? Anyway thanks, this looks like it has potential (I love this whole class of programs) and am serious considering giving it a whirl.

Andrew Laird Wm Shore - There is no need for suffixes with TypeMate, as it includes the ability to associate multiple expansions for a single shortcut. For example, you can set up a shortcut so that when you type 'doc' and TypeMate will pop up with a list for you to choose from containing 'document', 'documents', 'documentation' etc.

Andrew Laird Darren Farmer - we will look into the possibility of adding hyperlinks into text expansions in a future version.

Andrew Laird Regarding KeyScrambler - yes, this software will interfere with the correct operation of TypeMate, since TypeMate needs to be able to read the keys being typed and this program will prevent this.

I will enquire with QFX Software about the possibility of getting TypeMate whitelisted so that it does not interfere with it.

Paul P Hi. Is it possible to type in a shortcut such as perhaps hh that will immediately expand to a predefined sentence, without having to first use a function key or tab key? Thank you.
May 7 2011 at 2:09am Copy Link

Andrew Laird Hi Paul P - yes, there is a setting in the TypeMate options window to automatically expand shortcuts using the first expansion that is defined. When this option is turned on, you do not need to use the function keys or tab key to select an expansion and the pop up window is not shown.

Faisal Humayun The price point still appears very steep considering http://www.phraseexpress.com/ accomplishes this and more as freeware.

Tazzie I always check out alternatives, just to ensure that I am purchasing the right program for my needs. I found this program called PHRASE EXPRESS that really impressed me. It is free for personal use, and not too expensive for business use. The options are really impressive. It has dictionaries in six different languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Dutch, and Portuguese. The business use provides for sharing, which would really be nice for those working on more than one computer.

The big downside is that, like TypeMate, it will conflict with KeyScrambler. It can, however, be disabled easily through the system tray. However, I plan to contact Phrase Express and see if they also can get whitelisted for KeyScrambler.

The link for Phrase Express is:

Here is an indepth review of Phrase Express, if you are interested:

TypeMate is great if you want a more streamlined program. However, since it is free, why not check out Phrase Express for all the cool features that you didn't know you needed :-)

Andrew Laird Thanks for doing a good job promoting a competing product!!

For the record, whilst the personal version of Phrase Express is free, the cheapest version that allows commercial use is missing some of the features of TypeMate such as formatted text.

Tazzie While we consumers like to support software that is being featured, we also know that one program cannot meet the needs of every single person. With that in mind, we do make the effort to provide options to other BDJ members and visitors. Many of us have more than one program in a specific genre for any of several reasons: some are software hogs .... sometimes no one program provides all functions needed, so a combination is needed ... sometimes we like to support new software/new developers to encourage them and help them get a foothold in the market.

I, as well as many here, value my relationships with developers and my support of software is at times encouraged/discouraged by the attitude of the developer. I was pleased with your honest responses about the potential areas of shortfall in TypeMate and problems with KeyScrambler and your plans for working on those.

However, I was disappointed to read your seemingly sarcastic remarks and disparagement of the "competition." As I mentioned above, often we will have more than one program in order to provide as many functions as possible, and I was leaning towards getting TypeMate for that and other reasons. If you read the comments on the postings of other software here at BDJ, you will see that it is not unusual to have comments or discussions brought up on software that is similar to that being posted. I try to be positive and support everyone, but also recognize the need to get as much factual info as possible to make the best informed decisions on which software meets my needs. Savvy developers acknowledge this and will be honest about shortcomings while also vigorously promoting their software's strengths.

Andrew Laird My apologies if my response appeared sarcastic - it was not intended to be, nor was it intended to be disparaging towards Phrase Express - a product that I consider to be more accomplished than all of the rest of the competition.

The reason for my post was that I didn't feel that such heavy and extensive promotion of a competing product was really justified in the context of the TypeMate comments section.

Tazzie @ Andrew ... I appreciate where you are coming from, and I do apologize for going a bit overboard and putting in so much info ... I should have put most of the info in a forum post.

TypeMate is a good product with a lot of potential. The value of products such as Phrase Express is that they show just what we could look forward to (or better!) in future versions of TypeMate. I wish you the best with your continued work on TypeMate and look forward to using those improvements!

Andrew Laird Hi everyone, just wanted to let you know that TypeMate is now updated to version 3.1.

This update fixes a bug with TAB key selection of expansions, and also adds an option to use plain text rather than formatted text for expansions - as requested here.

I was trying to take a closer look at the Typemate software but it seems that your web site is off line. Is Exile Software alive, well and supporting Typemate?

Mark Johnson Does TypeMate allow for text expansions that can do things like cursor movements? i.e. something like:

ENTER { ENTER } UP ENTER TAB End with cursor here

which would expand to:

{
   End with cursor here
}
