These days, USB devices are more common that grains of sand in the ocean. And yet, despite the fact that USB thumb drives, MP3 players, PMPs, digital photo frames, printers, coffee wamers, and rubber duckies have reached uibquity, Windows can't see fit to update their sorry USB device manager for the 21st century.
Enter USB Safely Remove.
USB Safely Remove offers a powerful and simple way to manage your wealth of USB devices, drives, and toys. It features a detailed, multi-functional stopping menu that displays actual device names (rather than Removable Drive G:) along with associated icons. You'll never eject the wrong device again!
You know how sometimes Windows simply won't let you remove a device? No longer a problem. USB Safely Remove will clearly show you the programs that are preventing the device from being stopped and make it simple to close these programs and their associated files.
But safe device removal is only the tip of the iceberg. It takes more than that to get on PC World's 100 Best of 2008 list!
Version Alert! USB Safely Remove recently moved into version 4.2. Here's a taste of what's new:
I already own this application from previous and I like it. I bought it because my original XP Safely Remove option disappeared from XP SP3 after installing some Windows update and I was not able to recover it even from backup, moreover my PC crashed then randomly while removing USBs with BSOD. The advantage is that there are a lot of translations provided so prog communicates with your mothers tongue, the usage is simple and GUI nice. Continuosly updated. So you do not get 2007 prog in 2009 as sometimes happen :) Worth its price, at least for me.

As soon as the link works, I'm buying it.
Just tried the free DL version. I'd buy the program right noe if the the link worked. Although I have no issues with the standard Windows USB tray utils, this program offers some very nice options. For one thing, instantly see if any USB drives have AutoRun enabled - a very serious security threat. Change the drive letters very easily; mount the frive letter as a folder; and get a LOT of technical properies info for each USB device and copy to clipboard.
I would also like to buy this software when the link is fixed

Igor, thanks so much for getting on top of this! Folks, the buy link should be working fine now. Many apologies for the Sunday morning inconvenience... -roger
I used to just HATE the way the built-in XP function worked and bought an earlier version of USB Safely Remove well over a year ago. It works so much better than Microsoft's lame version. I upgraded recently and like the new version even better. Great program and definitely worth the price.
Thanks to BDJ for offering a great utility at a nice price. Finally, no more "pain" when managing USB devices. USB Safely Remove is definitely one of the utilities that I will never be without.
My problem was a combination floppy-drive/USB multi-card reader. After I was done reading a flash card, I'd use the XP icon to remove the card; fine. But I'd have to reboot to get the use of the card reader again. I just tried the download and not only did it work, it warned me that restarting the reader would restart some kind of USB printer driver. Scary, but it gave me a possible explanation for XP's default behavior. This was just part of the full explanations and options I was given. I'd call it generous hand-holding. I'm buying mine now.
Thanks a lot to everybody who showed an interest to USB Safely Remove! Also it's a pleasusure for us to see so kind responses about the program. If you have any inconveniences with the program or have a feature request or other kind of a feedback, welcome to our support form: http://safelyremove.com/support.htm or to the forum: http://safelyremove.com/forum/ Also I'd like to say thank you to Roger for such great service as BitsDuJour!
Wow, this came around a bit quick. It's a great piece of software, particularly if you've a multi card reader installed in your pc. I like the way you can hide usb devices and set icons. Highly recommended to those who missed it in January.
I agree with Adrian. This is a great product. Works well. I always hated the "Safely Remove" function before. Now it is a breeze.
17 mins to go on the BDJ offer and I get an invalid coupon on the order page. :-/ What time zone am I supposed to adjust your clock to? Thanks.
Thank you very much to everybody who show an interest in USB Safely Remove! Jo Jo: I'm sorry for this incident, it's strangely because the coupon code is still valid now and will have been valid until the end of March 6th. Does a single purchase allow me to install it on the four computers I am running, or do I have to buy 4 separate licenses? I ask because I tire of spending thousands of dollars each year for separate licenses of some great programs I own. So I no longer buy programs that allow install on one computer. Thanks.
Hello Michael, Yes, one license allows you personal usage of the program on any number of computers, moreover this license will allow you to upgrade for the program lifetime. You can read more about license benefits here: http://safelyremove.com/order.htm
This really is a neat and helpful application. Maybe you can add an icon of a standard eBook reader, so I can distinguish between my reader and the PDA?
Hello Peter, Thank you for the kind words! We will consider adding some new icons and maybe icon of eReaders as well, however currently you can search in Google images for eReader icon and upload it to the program by yourself. It's easy, just go to device properties in the program, click "Change" button and then click "Load Custom Image" button at the bottom of the window with icons. You can upload an image of any size, the program will resize it automatically.
I bought this the last time it was offered by Bits du Jour. I find it an extremely helpful little program -- use it almost daily. I also like the license -- very fair, in my view.
Hello Tom, Thank you for the kind words! We are happy to know that our users are satisfied :)
Thanks Igor. I downloaded and installed the program. It has so many additional options and features compared to the limited Windows XP program. I like being able to name the drives so I don't have to remember which drive is which when plugged in. At any one time I might have five or so USB devices connected, such as thumb drives, external hard disks, printer, etc. Also, the unmounting is easy to do. And more efficient. Made the purchase, just in time since the Bits special ends in about 45 minutes.
Hah, nabbed this deal with one minute left to go!
Thank you to everybody who takes a party in this deal! Have a nice work with USB Safely Remove!
Just to be clear, will purchasing USB Safely Remove here also entitle the buyer to lifetime free upgrades as it does with direct purchases through the developer?
Yes, the license condition will stay the same so the buyer from BDJ will be entitled to lifetime free upgrades as well.
Hello, what about Windows7 and Vista compatibility? (Also, 64 bit?)
Yes, the program was tested and fully compatible with Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 both 32 and 64 bit. Also it's compatible with Windows 2000 and 2003.
I was lucky enough to get a free license for version 4.1.5.806 and for the most part I like this little treasure very much. A very nice improvement over Window's version. I now know exactly which drive I'm trying to remove and even when I use the same slot for different flash drives, USB Safely Remove recognizes it and gives the correct name. There is one thing I would love to see change. I dislike having an Explorer window pop up every time I plug in a device. I haven't been able read moreto find a way to turn it off - or to change the view or the position of the window so that it corresponds to the view and position that, on my system, is the normal one for Explorer. I did try entering an alternative file manager (Xplorer2) but that option doesn't seem to work. Any chance for future changes to the current behavior?
K H, does this problem hapen when you uninstall USB Safely Remove?
I am not sure what you are asking. I have never uninstalled it. If I uninstalled, it wouldn't be there so it wouldn't happen. BEFORE I installed USB Safely Remove there was only the Windows box that popped up to allow me to choose which USB to remove. Windows Explorer never appeared unless I opened it myself and, when I did, it showed up in folder view - just the way I like it - and on my second screen - just where I want it. I haven't thought of this as a "problem" with your read morenice software, just the normal behavior of the program. I was only saying that I would prefer Explorer not open at all and if it absolutely MUST, then open it in my preferred view - so I don't have to reset it again and again and again.
The program by default doesn't display Explorer on external drive connection. However it's possible to setup this action in the program so probably you checked it on accidentally. Go to the program options, switch to global autorun tab and disable (or remove) Exporer process from the list of processes to launch after device connection.
Nothing was ever listed in the processes to launch list. Also, I no longer have access to the program at all. AVAST had it for breakfast this morning. I have reported it as a false positive but I'm still without the application and reinstalling will not help until they fix the issue.
K H: The Explorer window that pops up when you insert a device has nothing to do with USB Safely Remove. Somewhere along the way you responded to Windows' Autorun feature in a way that causes this to happen. I have the same problem with one...and *only one*...of my external USB devices (of which I currently have 8), and it started *before* I installed USB Safely Remove. I wish I knew what I did to cause this to happen, but I'm willing to bet good money (and lots of it!!) that it'll take reinstalling Windows to "fix" it :-(
K H, Rick True: If you are using Windows Vista or 7, you can disable this Windows behavior with this way: open Control Panel, type "autorun" in the search bar, open Autorun applet (big green link "Autorun") here you will see the list of action for different kind of contents. Either disable autorun at all by the option in the top of the Window or check what you have assigned to autorun for different types of content and uncheck running Explorer. If you are using Win XP I'd recommend you using TweakUI for disabling autorun and this article: http://ask-leo.com/how_do_i_really_disable_autoplay_in_windows_xp.html Hope this helps.
K H: Regarding your Avast yesterday breakfast. This is really a false alarm and we will notify Avast about it ASAP. Hop they fix this quickly as usually.
I never doubted for a moment that AVAST was giving a false positive AND Thanks for your help.
Just to let the developer know, it's not just AVAST that finds a problem with the USBSafelyRemove.exe file - COMODO Internet Security suite also has issues with it. I had to add it to an exception list to avoid getting the file quarantined. Hope that this is indeed a false positive... Otherwise, great program so far.
Hi Igor, thanks for this offer, just ordered it. Regards from Germany, Patrick
It needs administrator privileges, so it is useless for me. Otherwise I liked it a lot.
B Barnabe Says COMODO Internet Security suite also has issues with it Thanks for the note! We have already notified Comodo about this problem and I hope they will fix this issue ASAP. Patrick J. Says: Hi Igor, thanks for this offer, just ordered it. Hi Patrick! Thank you too for the order! Jari Karjalainen Says: It needs administrator privileges, so it is useless for me. Otherwise I liked it a lot. Jari, needs administrator privileges only when you install the program. For daily work administrative privileges are not required.
Well, here it does not start at all unless I start it with "Run as administrator". This is with standard user account on Windows 7, 64-bit.
Jari, we will check this issue in Windows 7 and try to fix in the next version.
No problems here - running Windows 7, 64 bit. Going to be picking this little beauty up...
Greg, do you use standard user account?
Drats! It figures that this would come up here only a few weeks after I paid full price for it! Still worth the $20 I paid for it thought. After using the 4.2 free version I was hooked. I've got 6 different PCs I'm using it on. Works well with my WIn7 64bit, Vista Home 32bit and WinXP 32 bit systems.
I really, really want this program and want it to work but the program doesn't not recognize my WD portable USB drives (500GB and below) nor the WD external USB 1GB drive. They are all just listed as "USB Composit Device" and are hidden. The one exception is a brand new WD portable USB drive that is 750GB. It is recognized correctly. This behavior is the same on both 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows 7. I would really like for this to work!:-) If you need any other information just let me know.
Used the free offering from this past summer and I really like this program. This is one of the best discounts I have seen for this program and I purchased it this AM. Good product, updated often and no problems. I am still not too sure how it works with esata which I am very interested in using. Seems that external hd has to be started with the initial boot and esata doesn't disconnect as simply as usb. I am fairly new at esata and hope usb sr can help.
Due to the overwhelming response Crystal Rich, Ltd has agreed to extend this deal for another day - Enjoy!
Great program, works perfectly for me under Windows 7 - 64 Bit. Has a lot of extra features (for example, correcting drive letter assignment on the fly) that make it indispensable.
-*- Dexter B Says: -*-I really, really want this program and want it to work but the program doesn't not recognize my WD portable USB drives (500GB and below) nor the WD external USB 1GB drive. They are all just listed as "USB Composit Device" and are hidden. Dexter, for the first try disabling "Display surprise removal devices" option. This might help in your case however you will not see such devices as mouse, printer and etc. In the next versions we will try to make correct behavior for your hard drive.
Jari: no, administrator. My comment was sort of a general "works with Windows 7 64-bit" comment in case anyone was wondering. Wasn't till later that I realized it might've been taken in the context of your discussion - sorry for the confusion.
