USB Safely Remove

Superior Device Management!

USB Safely Remove
Tools & Utilities

*** Due to the overwhelming response Crystal Rich, Ltd has agreed to extend this deal for another day - Enjoy! ***

These days, USB devices are more common that grains of sand in the ocean. And yet, despite the fact that USB thumb drives, MP3 players, PMPs, digital photo frames, printers, coffee wamers, and rubber duckies have reached uibquity, Windows can't see fit to update their sorry USB device manager for the 21st century.

Enter USB Safely Remove.

USB Safely Remove offers a powerful and simple way to manage your wealth of USB devices, drives, and toys. It features a detailed, multi-functional stopping menu that displays actual device names (rather than Removable Drive G:) along with associated icons. You'll never eject the wrong device again!

You know how sometimes Windows simply won't let you remove a device? No longer a problem. USB Safely Remove will clearly show you the programs that are preventing the device from being stopped and make it simple to close these programs and their associated files.

But safe device removal is only the tip of the iceberg. It takes more than that to get on PC World's 100 Best of 2008 list!

Written by Derek Lee

USB Safely Remove also offers:

  • Hotkey support: Now you can stop and view devices with a single hotkey!
  • Autorun program on connect/disconnect: The autorun feature allows to automatically run applications upon inserting or removing your USB device.
  • Command line support: USB Safely Remove has a powerful and convenient command line -- usr.exe -- that allows you to automate your work with any devices.
  • See and stop any kind of hotplug/USB devices: USB, SATA, FireWire, PCMCIA, and more...
  • Return Device Back: Automatically return or re-mount a device if you accidentally eject it.

Version Alert! USB Safely Remove recently moved into version 4.2. Here's a taste of what's new:

  • Attractive new interface design feels right at home in the Windows 7 environment.
  • Stop all devices at once. Now it's simple to disconnect all USB devices in one swipe. Great if you're in a hurry!
  • Associate a particular drive letter to a particular device. The drive letter will not be available for any other device, even if the original is disconnected!
  • A powerful new autorun feature automatically allows you to launch applications on device connection and disconnection.
  • ...and much, much more!

Real Users Say:

  • “I am Vice President of a computer user group and at times I am using up to four jump drives. Before installing your program I had to remember which drive was inserted in which port. Now that is no longer a problem as each USB drive is identified and I know which to remove. It certainly is a great program! ”- Shirley Finefrock, Vice President, PACUG, www.pacugfl.org
  • “This little program is exactly what I was looking for. The most valuable program feature for me is the ability to name the various USB devices that are connected to my computer and to be able to give them descriptive names that make sense to me so I know which device I'm stopping. I sometimes have 3 or 4 flash drives connected and now I don't have to remember which drive letter goes with which flash drive. Also, the ability to hide devices is very handy. No more accidentally stopping my external CD burner because I clicked on the wrong device in the list. The last time I did that was what prompted me to search for a program like this one. I'm glad I came across your site and found USB Safely Remove. ”- Valerie Kyriakopoulos
  • “I purchased the program because somewhere I read in a Forum very scary comments about a person who lost all his data on a USB stick because he unplugged it from his PC without using the standard Windows "Safely Remove Hardware" facility, and on top of that I ruined one of my own USB sticks because I did the same. Your program makes it so much easier to unplug a USB device, especially a USB stick, without causing damage, and to do this selectively, one by one. Maybe, in your marketing, you could emphasize the security that your wonderful program offers. ”- Robert L.A. Trost, Innovation Management Consultant, CCI PLC
  • “What a fantastic program! This should really replace the Standard Windows Safely Remove program which is next to useless in my opinion. Also on my system (WinXP Pro/SP2) the standard icon in the Systray keeps disappearing for days on end and then will suddenly reappear for a while. Very worrying and I have spent days trying to get to the bottom of it. Unsuccessfully I might add, which is why I'm so pleased to have discovered your tool on the Internet. ”- Ken Longley
  • “I have an external 400GB hard drive attached via USB to my laptop. Naturally I want to unmount this properly, if I have to take my laptop somewhere! However, with the Windows utility, I would always get a message just saying "Unable to stop device - try later". So I would have to shut the system down to be sure (no ways am I just pulling the USB cable out & risking Windows screwing up the directory of my 400 GB of data!).I had tried with tools like ProcessExplorer to track down which processes were locking the drive, but you need a PhD to interpret ProcessExplorer's data!!!So being able to run USBSafelyRemove and instantly discover which processes I had to terminate, so that I could safely unmount my drive, was an OUTSTANDING feature for me, and justified the price of the program on the spot!!! ”- Neil Hinrichsen, www.worldsong.ws

Just to be clear, will purchasing USB Safely Remove here also entitle the buyer to lifetime free upgrades as it does with direct purchases through the developer?

  • Nov 30 2009 1:40am
Crystal Rich, Ltd Developer Igor Tkachenko (Crystal Rich, Ltd Developer) Says:

Yes, the license condition will stay the same so the buyer from BDJ will be entitled to lifetime free upgrades as well.

Hello, what about Windows7 and Vista compatibility? (Also, 64 bit?)

  • Nov 30 2009 8:30am
Crystal Rich, Ltd Developer Igor Tkachenko (Crystal Rich, Ltd Developer) Says:

Yes, the program was tested and fully compatible with Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 both 32 and 64 bit.

Also it's compatible with Windows 2000 and 2003.

    Visitor K H (Visitor) Says:

I was lucky enough to get a free license for version 4.1.5.806 and for the most part I like this little treasure very much. A very nice improvement over Window's version. I now know exactly which drive I'm trying to remove and even when I use the same slot for different flash drives, USB Safely Remove recognizes it and gives the correct name.

There is one thing I would love to see change. I dislike having an Explorer window pop up every time I plug in a device. I haven't been able read more

K H, does this problem hapen when you uninstall USB Safely Remove?

  • Dec 2 2009 11:44am
    Visitor K H (Visitor) Says:

I am not sure what you are asking. I have never uninstalled it. If I uninstalled, it wouldn't be there so it wouldn't happen.

BEFORE I installed USB Safely Remove there was only the Windows box that popped up to allow me to choose which USB to remove. Windows Explorer never appeared unless I opened it myself and, when I did, it showed up in folder view - just the way I like it - and on my second screen - just where I want it.

I haven't thought of this as a "problem" with your read more

Crystal Rich, Ltd Developer Igor Tkachenko (Crystal Rich, Ltd Developer) Says:

The program by default doesn't display Explorer on external drive connection. However it's possible to setup this action in the program so probably you checked it on accidentally. Go to the program options, switch to global autorun tab and disable (or remove) Exporer process from the list of processes to launch after device connection.

  • Dec 3 2009 11:32am
    Visitor K H (Visitor) Says:

Nothing was ever listed in the processes to launch list. Also, I no longer have access to the program at all. AVAST had it for breakfast this morning. I have reported it as a false positive but I'm still without the application and reinstalling will not help until they fix the issue.

  • Dec 3 2009 1:19pm
    Visitor Rick Truell (Visitor) Says:

K H: The Explorer window that pops up when you insert a device has nothing to do with USB Safely Remove. Somewhere along the way you responded to Windows' Autorun feature in a way that causes this to happen. I have the same problem with one...and *only one*...of my external USB devices (of which I currently have 8), and it started *before* I installed USB Safely Remove. I wish I knew what I did to cause this to happen, but I'm willing to bet good money (and lots of it!!) that it'll take reinstalling Windows to "fix" it :-(

  • Dec 3 2009 2:50pm
Crystal Rich, Ltd Developer Igor Tkachenko (Crystal Rich, Ltd Developer) Says:

K H, Rick True: If you are using Windows Vista or 7, you can disable this Windows behavior with this way: open Control Panel, type "autorun" in the search bar, open Autorun applet (big green link "Autorun") here you will see the list of action for different kind of contents. Either disable autorun at all by the option in the top of the Window or check what you have assigned to autorun for different types of content and uncheck running Explorer.

If you are using Win XP I'd recommend you using TweakUI for disabling autorun and this article: http://ask-leo.com/how_do_i_really_disable_autoplay_in_windows_xp.html

    Hope this helps.

K H: Regarding your Avast yesterday breakfast. This is really a false alarm and we will notify Avast about it ASAP. Hop they fix this quickly as usually.

  • Dec 4 2009 5:52pm
    Visitor K H (Visitor) Says:

I never doubted for a moment that AVAST was giving a false positive AND Thanks for your help.

  • Dec 7 2009 12:44am
    Visitor B Barnabe (Visitor) Says:

Just to let the developer know, it's not just AVAST that finds a problem with the USBSafelyRemove.exe file - COMODO Internet Security suite also has issues with it. I had to add it to an exception list to avoid getting the file quarantined. Hope that this is indeed a false positive... Otherwise, great program so far.

Drats! It figures that this would come up here only a few weeks after I paid full price for it! Still worth the $20 I paid for it thought. After using the 4.2 free version I was hooked. I've got 6 different PCs I'm using it on. Works well with my WIn7 64bit, Vista Home 32bit and WinXP 32 bit systems.

  • Dec 7 2009 6:58pm
    Visitor Dexter B (Visitor) Says:

I really, really want this program and want it to work but the program doesn't not recognize my WD portable USB drives (500GB and below) nor the WD external USB 1GB drive. They are all just listed as "USB Composit Device" and are hidden.

The one exception is a brand new WD portable USB drive that is 750GB. It is recognized correctly.

This behavior is the same on both 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows 7.

I would really like for this to work!:-) If you need any other information just let me know.

Used the free offering from this past summer and I really like this program. This is one of the best discounts I have seen for this program and I purchased it this AM. Good product, updated often and no problems.

I am still not too sure how it works with esata which I am very interested in using. Seems that external hd has to be started with the initial boot and esata doesn't disconnect as simply as usb. I am fairly new at esata and hope usb sr can help.

Dexter, for the first try disabling "Display surprise removal devices" option. This might help in your case however you will not see such devices as mouse, printer and etc.

In the next versions we will try to make correct behavior for your hard drive.
