Franck W I'd like some clarification regarding the licensing policy.

- one computer only
- no computer change allowed
- online activation
- with hardware footprint

It just seems crazy to me... Obviously I don't understand what is allowed and what is not... It can't be...

The soft by itself seems really promising.
Thanks !

Eddie Tex @ Franck W

Per the FAQ section of their website (http://www.amlpages.com/faq.shtml):
The Single License may either be: Used by a single person who uses the software personally on one or more computers OR Installed on a single computer and be used non-simultaneously by multiple people.

Note also that the developer offers free upgrades for life... so even if it were limited to one computer (which it is not), the offer wouldn't be crazy at all, in my opinion.

Franck W. As per their FAQ, it sounds indeed a nice deal...

Steven Avery Hi,

This is a genre where I consider the leaders in recent days to be RightNote (strong on inserting tables and spreadsheets), TreeDbnotes and the freeware Keynote-NF, with another dozen products that are worthwhile, but maybe not quite as elegant and usable. Keynote-NF is functional, with a bit of a spartan feel.

It is also an area where a professional product in the $25 range is a great investment, the type of software you will use every day.

AML looks very nice, but afaik it has not been discussed much (is it fairly new ?) e.g. on the famous Donationcoder note discussion. The tab setup looks fine.

So anyone who could share some of the distinctions, this would be very helpful, including the vendor. This inquiry is meant as supportive and positive, I am always looking for a good professional note program and just asked Bits to seek out RightNote. If this is competitive in functionality and usability and elegance, I will definitely give it a go, but can not load it up till tonight.

Bob Roberts Aml Pages looks to be a fine program. I recently bought Surfulater on a BDJ special. Aml seems like it is similar in function. Would anyone have a comparison of the two programs?

Steven Avery Hi,

Good question, Robert - the developer is overseas ... maybe a bit of communication difficulty and Nico can get on it.

Note that there is a Russian-English support forum, a good sign that this is an active developer, although the number of posts is lean, and mostly in Russian.

In 2008 Mazov Gosha, makes a comment or two on the FileForum discussion.
http://fileforum.betanews...79358926/1
Mazov agreed that the GUI is not the best (I would say not so crisp looking comprared to TreeDbNotes and RightNote) and also pointed out some features in Ami not in the competition. Fair enough.

Here is a review that looks favorable and appears non-biased.
http://albertesmeralda.com/wp/aml-pages/

Note that they mention Treepad and Maple, two others that are similar to the three alternatives I mention above. The genre is rich.

Surfulater I think is more a web-clipper and organizer than a tree-structured all purpose note program. With a note program you design the tree hierarchies as you go along, move stuff about, print it out. In my experience, Surfalater, although a nice program, really does not function in that way.

This appears like a good BDJ deal for those wishing to locate a reasonably priced Note Organiser. With only a brief test it does most of what one would expect with a few reservations. The spellchecker while not standard is apparently available as a plug-in along with a number of others, so that looks fine. The UI-themes can be customised, which is probably a good idea. One of my concerns is the apparent inability of multi node copy or move. Judging by the Version History this program is frequently updated so perhaps the developer will consider this in a future release. As for alternatives TreeDbNotes is a competent organiser with plenty of user customisation options though perhaps a little fussier with data-backup retrieval, has a slightly longer learning curve, and is a little slower to open. If your after plenty of options TreeDbNotes is a good choice, I've used it for years though am now using and prefer My Notes Keeper which is a great all - rounder, and it also has responsive and active development in regard to customer feedback. Whilst lacking the finesse of some of the competition AML has a few extra features inc a handy Drop Box and at this price with free upgrades I'll be happy to purchase a license. Even with a another organiser this would be useful to use as a 2nd or specialised notes organiser.
Both Treepad and Maple have varying versions and prices along with other pros and cons. Keynote, All My Notes etc have other issues. So this deal appears to be a rather good deal.

Steven Avery Hi Folks,

Thanks Glen,

It is a nice program, although I feel more confident with RightNote in terms of structure and stability. You are right that a person can often have more than one (e.g. one may handle personal notes in a nice way, another may be better for a web note research project .. when the price is $15 or so you can afford to shake it out as the time goes on.

I looked for a "remove formatting" option (bring a section to plain text) .. so far I have not found it, this is my first test for any of these programs. It seems so rudimentary that the omission to me is an example of developer undevelopment.

Anyway, I still may consider it, as their sample has some nice inline pictures. (Poor color choices, though, a so-so color esthetic sense. ). Not sure yet.

On a quick look-see My Notes Keeper lacks the tab feature that can help unclutter the Explorer-style index, by adding another dimension, ie. multiple note indexes in one file (page). Am I right about that limitation (something I like about Treedbnotes and Rightnote and Keynote-NF and I consider close to fundamental (with good "rich text format" and some basics.

Eddie Tex @ Glen and Steve

Thank you both for your thoughts and recommendations regarding other competing products. I too am big on note keeping and have used TreePad but have been looking for something better, which by the way DOES support pasting without formatting which is nice... but does not support Unicode and the text formatting can get a bit weird with longer notes.

I've looked at several other alternatives that showed up here on BDJ including AllMyNotes (too weak in features) and TreeProjects (which I purchased b/c of Unicode support and a great split-screen feature which I have yet to find in a competing product but is also lacking in some usability features... thus I use for highly specialized needs that require the split screen and unicode support).

The other tool that I'll mention which I find absolutely indispensable is ConnectedText, which is more of a Wiki style note taker. That will probably remain as my single most important application on my PC. That said, it's a heavier application that requires some symbolic linking to use with DropBox. It also can't run as more than one instance and is more cumbersome with quick scratch style notes. Nothing comes close to it though in terms of power and options to relating and linking your notes together.

Aml looks interesting but I'm not fond of the UI. Looks very cluttered. More disturbing to me is the lack of vendor activity thus far.

I've noted both of your suggestions and am looking forward to trialing them myself.
Oct 30 2011 at 9:37pm
Steven Avery Thanks, Eddie,

Aml has given me a note:

"Dear Aml Pages User,
Thank You for trying Aml Pages!
You`ve been able to evaluate this trial version for 40 days. However, as 40-day trial period has finally expired, ...."

I just installed it a couple of hours ago.

================

In other products: Treesheets and InfoQube received some special discussions on DonationCoder, but they are a bit different, MyBase is always interesting.

The one I suggest to give special attention is RightNote. Compares most directly to TreeDbNotes, but watch the way that a table or spreadsheet can be entered right in a note.

I'll take a more careful look at ConnectedText.

Your point about TreeProjects is interesting, as in this pic:
http://personaldatabase.o...eral_2.png

I can see how that feature can be nice. Can you describe one of the usability lacks.

We could take this over to a new DonationCoder thread, where these discussions are normative.

Glen Hilton MNK supports Tabs for Notes though not nodes. It naming process it a little different than other apps though I thinks it works well. A couple of other tree option apps might include UltraRecall and Ask Sam previously offered on BDJ. Mars notebook is fast and compact and yet another value option.
Regarding Aml the spell checker plugin. Uncertain and pending reply from Aml Pages. Glen

The 40 day bug has bitten hre as well
Oct 30 2011 at 11:43pm
Eddie Tex @ Glen,

I had tried UltraRecall as well. I thought it was perfect in many ways, BUT it did not support unicode and the developers had no real interest in adding it when I contacted them (neither did TreePad for that matter).

@ Steve,

I found TreeProjects to be lacking in the sense of keyboard shortcuts when entering/editing notes. There's no means provided to assign a shortcut key to bullets and to indenting or outdenting... you have to use your mouse to click on those buttons up above... and if the edit window is narrow enough (such as when you have the split screen view), then you won't have access to those buttons at all.

While I've found the formatting of notes to be mostly well done, there are inconsistencies. Like with bullets... when using them, the wraparound text goes all the way to the left instead of aligning with the bullets. And introducing different fonts sometimes have a way of being forgotten when hitting the "Enter" key. TreePad on the other hand, for all of its UI deficiencies and warts, didn't exhibit these issues and I probably would have stuck to it if it was at least able to support Unicode.

That said, I'm a seminary student studying Greek and Hebrew and I find the split screen combined with the unicode support incredibly helpful when doing language work. None of the other note-taking applications could support those two features (but I have not yet tried the options you and Glen have mentioned).

I've noticed that other BDJ users really like TreeProjects for its file attachment feature. You can set it to monitor a folder area and any file that is found there is automatically read into its database. I don't find a need for this feature, but that could be a killer feature for someone else.

Valeria Gyenge Hi Everybody who haven't been using yet Aml Pages, this excellent software!

For my and surely the developer's hope they will use soonest, and will be satisfied by its working.

I could never seen a such reach functionality Note taking software, which is under about the developer's continuous care. He maintains and tracks also the claims for improving his product. I know, because I requested many improvement changes and he really did. Many thanks for him here, too!

So what is Aml Pages at all?

- A professional desktop notes organizer-outliner and much more!
- It keeps track all your notes, information, passwords, emails and URLs, can save web pages (or fragments), even developers can use it for code segment gathering helping them with syntax highlighting, using a feature rich User Interface (UI).
- Supports plain text, rich text, html, tables and pictures, file attachments, iconized tree.
- The built in Rich text editor very handful for formatting your notes, any text, even you can edit saved web page fragments in html mode, and can syntax highlight program codes.
- You can insert any picture JPEG, GIF, PNG, TIFF, Bitmap, Icon, Windows Metafiles,
- The bookmarking within a page is an excellent feature, you don't find in any else Note taking software!
- Has a wide range Filter and Find capability in the whole document, text nodes/pane, bookmarks, The search results can be saved.
- You can use text and also styled text templates and also you can define your own styles.
- There are several plugins many built-in which further broadens its functionality.
- The Aml Assist or IE2Aml IE toolbar plugin integrate its work supporting Drag and Drop, with FF, Chrome, Safari and many well known application MsWord, MsOutlook, Ms Visal Studio,.... In the case of IE2Aml allows saving immediately from the IE toolbar.
- text auto completion, auto replace, handling favorites, exporting Aml Pages documents into a tree of folders and files, even XML. So, it also can be integrated well with MindMapper/Freeplane .

If you ever used any Tree Outliners like Treepad, Maple, KeyNote you will really appreciate the rich functionality and its simple even clever UI of this AMl Pages software It may be useful not only for programmers, project managers, but can further improve anyone's daily and also serious research work!

I can offer for everyone+
