*** Great News! CodeWeavers has agreed to extend this deal for another day - Enjoy! ***

Seeking simplification in an increasingly complicated world? CrossOver XI is CodeWeavers newest title, and it enables all Mac and Linux users the ability to run Windows software and games without the need for a Windows operating system license! In a nuthshell, CrossOver XI you immediate access to thousands of Windows applications otherwise unavailable without a Microsoft license. Whether you’re a Mac user wanting to play Wizard 101, a Linux user needing Microsoft Office 2010, or someone who really misses the ‘90s and is nostalgic for WordPerfect 3.1, CrossOver XI is for you!

Sure, it's a handy feature to be able to install Windows on your Mac, but to make this happen, you'll need to actually purchase a Windows license, which costs money that you would much rather spend on fun things! Instead of emptying your wallet, check out CrossOver XI Mac, and get the best of both worlds -- Windows apps on your Intel Mac, and money saved in your pocket! And With CrossOver you won't need to reboot your machine or switch to some complicated virtual machine setup -- just click on your Windows apps (as if they were regular Mac apps), and you're up and running!

You would think this magical ability to run Windows apps on your Mac without a Windows installation would take lots of brains and technical expertise to configure. Wrong! All you need to do is place the install CD of your Windows app or download the .exe file and CrossOver XI Mac will handle the rest, seamlessly installing the application and automatically configuring it to run on your Mac. Plus, with CrossOver XI Mac, you'll enjoy a consistent stream of software updates and improved support for 1 month!

CrossOver XI is also available for Linux, allowing you to install your favorite Windows productivity applications and plugins in Linux, without needing a Microsoft Operating System license. CrossOver XI Linux Professional includes an easy-to-use, single-click interface, which makes installing a Windows application simple and fast. Once installed, your apps will integrate directly with your Gnome or KDE environment. Just click and run your applications, exactly as you would in Windows, but with the full freedom of Linux.

Toni McConnel I downloaded the trial version of CrossOver XI to my Mac and the three programs I installed seem to work OK so far. However, in two of them, when I want to open a file (the third program doesn't open files) the directory only displays a partial list of what is there. And never the one I want, of course. 8-) One of the programs is Quicken 11, which is on your list of supported programs, the other is MyInfo. Can you explain this? Inability to see files in directory renders Crossover useless to me. I am running OS Lion 7.5 on a Mac Mini.

lemonade soda This is a very interesting product. Initially confused by the "magic"... was it a Cloud service, was it installation of independent API services, it turns out that CrossOver is based on Wine. http://en.wikipedia.org/w..._(software) . I had forgotten about Wine many years ago... nice to see that it is still alive and kicking and being developed further.

My biggest interest would be to get MS Office working. I think a lot of people like myself are interested in using their legacy application licenses on a Mac. But Office 2003/2007 are only marked as "silver" compatibility which means i) is mostly works, but some bugs, and ii) CrossOver makes a commitment to get silver applications to gold.

But that is a very important question. What does "commitment" mean? How long will it take? If I buy CrossOver today I want it to work with the applications that I have today that you commit to work with. But there is no timetable of compatibility, and your license expires in 6 months.

I would buy today if CrossOver came with an indefinite license. But limited to 6 months of upgrades? No. With no guarantee my applications compatibility will be fixed in this timeframe? No. I'll wait and see. And I think many other target customers will be of the same mindset. Problem is... in 3 months this promotion will be long gone and CrossOver will have been forgotten.

CHARGE $10 MORE... but give people permanent licence. And do it now. It is a false economy to try and turn your existing customers into a captured revenue stream. We hate it. Do it in the corporate world, maybe. But not private customers.

Robert Reese I've been using Crossover for Linux for a couple of years now; it is what really made it possible for me to use Linux as my PRIMARY operating system. It was not unusual for me to only boot into Windows once every three or four months, and then only for a very specific purpose (until this Fall semester where I had to have a multimedia workflow that required all the horsepower my laptop could give).

Still, it is the solution I needed for the software I used.

By the way, it is not the perfect solution. Some software runs perfectly, some has minor annoyances, some barely work, and some don't work at all. But for the majority of software I use, it either works perfectly or with minor annoyances.

And yes, this is FAR SUPERIOR than WINE alone, even though it is the same company developing both. Think of WINE as the "Lite" version of CrossOver.

Jana Schmid @Robert Reese Thank you for the kind words. We here at CodeWeavers really appreciate it. I am so glad to hear that your experience with us has been nothing short of being positive.

Jana Schmid @Toni McConnel,
The behavior you describe is expected. When an application requests access to a filesystem, we honor the request of the location it asks for. In the case of many applications, this is within the would be Windows tree which is buried on the MacOS within CrossOver. While we could adjust the place CrossOver points a user it would adversely affect other applications that expect this behavior. Due to this fact we recommend users be aware of where the file manager will place them and use their existing tools to locate files within their system.

Jana Schmid @lemonade soda,
We take our user experience very seriously, so I asked the Vice President of Sales, James Ramey to answer your concerns. Here is what he had to say.

"Thank you for your interest in CrossOver.

First, you are absolutely correct in that CrossOver is an implementation of Wine. Essentially, it’s Wine with a proprietary XServer which allows for compatibility on the Mac platform. The proprietary bits that we’ve added to CrossOver are not currently available in Wine (which is why Wine does not work on OSX), and the proprietary bits are not in Wine only because they have not been accepted by the Wine Maintainer as he feels these ‘hacks’ are not polished enough to go into Wine (all other development that we do is submitted to Wine and incorporated – if accepted – into future releases of the OpenSource Project).

Second, your assessment regarding applications is somewhat limited. MS Office 2003/2007 are marked as ‘Silver’ only because the developer (in this case Microsoft) has no plans to certify the applications. We tend to only mark an application as ‘Gold’ under the most rigorous standards (which never happens as the liability tends to be greater – meaning not one thing can ever go wrong in a Gold application – than the certification tends to be worth) or if the developer certifies the application. However, there are several thousands (tens of thousands) of users running CrossOver specifically for Office 2003 and 2007 compatibility with great success (and no known issues). That stated, we offer a free trial of our software so that you can test these claims for yourself. Don’t take our word for it. Try the software OR go to the forums and read what other ‘real world users’ (not employees) have to say about their experiences with CrossOver. Most are very blunt and to the point about what doesn’t work (for them). But again, I don’t believe you’ll see any real issues with Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. Active Directory doesn’t work with Outlook (otherwise that’s quite good). Project and Visio work (more to what I would believe to be ‘Silver’ rating). OneNote is a dicey application in CrossOver (rated Bronze, but I would rate unsupported). And Access does not work at all.

Commitment? We work to improve the software every single day. We’re working on a number of features in the application to improve support. We have updated CrossOver six times this year (one was a major upgrade). How long a development takes is how long a development takes. We can’t reasonably state that something will work tomorrow or next week or even next month. But then again, you get all the improvements that were made to CrossOver over the last 16 years that now ‘come’ with the program as part of your support. And if it’s Office Applications that you want to work, I am quite certain that they all do today (with the exception of Access).

We’re not in the business of providing lifetime support. No one in the software business provides lifetime support. Not Apple. Not Microsoft. Not our competitors (Parallel or VMWare – which are both more expensive and require you to also purchase and install Windows). Not any anti-virus software developer (theirs is also a subscription model). And this list goes on and on and on. Lifetime support is a lie (quite frankly) as no one can account for what tomorrow’s technology developments will be, and no developer (not Microsoft, Apple, or Google) can promise that their software will work on their platforms in one, three, five, or ten years. We won’t engage in this type of business practice as we feel its deceiving. And if that means you wait to use or software or decide to purchase a competitor’s solution, we understand. But if buying a product that you can try first (with no limitations other than for 14 days) and can purchase at a significant discount that includes six months of support and the option to continue support for a year after that for $30.00 (USD) isn’t appealing to you, chances are a lifetime license would be equally unappealing.

Thank you again for your comments. We appreciate your interest in CrossOver, and we hope that you do decide to try our product (free trial available at www.codeweavers.com). Our very best regards."

R A I also used Crossover on my Linux system so that I could run certain Windows programs. The use of Crossover also allowed me to convert entirely to Linux. I paid for new licenses of CrossOver for several years and was so impressed, that even when I was forced to use Windows as my main OS, I still purchased a Crossover license to support them. Its not expensive, and well-worth it to me to support companies that give so much to the open-source movement.

Fantastic company, forthright and dedicated to open-source. I will be buying another license as soon as I can switch back to Linux!

Jana Schmid @R A Well thank you! That really means a lot to us.
CodeWeavers - Oct 1 2012 at 8:19am
Roger Thomasson Folks, CodeWeavers is very clear about their support and upgrade policies. If you don't like them, don't purchase the product. But please don't complain about it here.

There are plenty of threads in the forum regarding lifetime upgrades. Feel free to lodge your opinions there.

if it cant run on above 2 and any others quite popular ones - would you please mention it ?

2) can crossover run on the supported linux distros if they are even run from anything - like from usb or from cd or VM too ?

disenchanted This is the best timing timing ever. ;^)

I just found out about this product a few weeks ago and was I have been looking to buy the linux version for the past 2 weeks or so.

But, I had been looking to get the 1 year version vs the 1 month.

Questions:

1. How much are renewals?
(I tried to look it up on your website but a person needs a Codeweaver account in order to get renewal rates. I don't own any of your products yet so I did not sign up for an account)

2. Does a person really "need" an ongoing renewal subscription?
(I assume that most updates are related to major new product releases; like when MS office 2007 went to office 2010).

Thanks for offering this on BDJ.

Amit Also, I guess support will be only from today till 1 month from now - is that correct ? or we can get support from a later date - like starting from 2 months ahead at maximum. I am not going to just zoom into linux with much effort right from today !
Oct 1 2012 at 8:20pm
R A The Crossover licenses are for support only. The software version that you bough doesn't expire. Its just like if you buy MS Office. You can get updates for Office 2007. But when Office 2010 comes out, you have to buy a new version. I purchased 2 years of Crossover licenses & support and hardly ever needed to use the support anyway. I can still use my old version of Crossover 10.

Its a great application and the company is a driving force behind the open-source WINE. When I return to Linux, I will certainly be purchasing Crossover again. Great application, great support, always pleased to purchase things from a company with integrity and dedication to community and open-source

Gonzo I love Crossover and use it on a daily basis; I highly recommend it!

That being said, I didn't see this offered yesterday when I checked BDJ (I check it everyday at 7:00 AM GMT-03:00). Was it added after the daily newsletter was sent?

1.) No it can't run on damn small linux. The last time we checked, Crossover can run on Puppy if you have the development packages installed. In general, Crossover doesn't run well on the "lightweight" Linux distros because they lack the system libraries necessary to support Crossover's functions.

2.) Crossover will run in a linux distro on a VM. USB should be fine, your milage with a CD will vary because you will almost certaintly need to install new system libraries in order get Crossover running. If you're installing from the appropriate .deb or .rpm package your package manager should install these additional libraries, automatically.

Jana Schmid @disenchanted

1.) Renewals are are $29.95 for 12 months of support and upgrades.

2.) Crossover will keep running after your subscription runs out, but you won't be able to get any upgrades, which may include bug fixes in the mentioned applications.

Jana Schmid @Amit

Support starts from the moment you buy CrossOver.
