Document scanning was supposed to make our lives easier, but the software applications and compatibilities involved in achieving scanning nirvana turned the process into a nightmare. Either the software that you want to use isn't compatible with your scanner, or the software that came with the scanner is horrible and doesn't meet your needs. It's time to start over, and PaperScan is the first step on this new journey to scanning freedom.

Want to keep up to date with new PaperScan releases and updates? Want to browse articles detailing functionality? Check out the Orpalis blog for that and more!

PaperScan is a universal scanning application with a superb OCR engine (available in the Pro version) that runs on both the TWAIN and WIA industry standards (will work with literally any scanner). With PaperScan, you can quickly scan documents to digital format without hassle, or import existing images and PDF files to take advantage of the wide array of adjustments and enhancements that the software offers. When you're done, you can save your scans to popular file formats that include JPEG, TIFF, PDF, and JBIG2, a revolutionary format that allows up to 10X compression for scanned documents.

Version 3 now includes changes in the interface, a new settings panel, more than 20 new filters and effects, support for 60+ OCR languages (Pro edition only), new profile manager to create remove and switch configuration settings, support for custom keyboard shortcuts management, pre-set annotations support with a featured designer (Pro edition only), new preview feature in scanning wizard and improved support for large bitmap handling and for camera devices.

What kinds of adjustments and enhancements does PaperScan offer? How about the ability to correct skewed images? Remove punch holes, borders, and blank pages? Rotate images, adjust color, filters, and apply special effects? When it comes to printing, no other application offers this level of flexibility and power, giving you the ability to resize images, select print quality, crop, and more! All of this functionality and more can be yours with PaperScan!

Please note folks, today you can purchase either PaperScan Home Edition or PaperScan Professional Edition. Scroll down the product page to find a comparison matrix detailing the differences in the versions.

Bryan Darby I have downloaded and installed the trial version but, although the offer states 'Universal scanning with superior OCR Technology', OCR is not supported.
Does the offer include OCR or not?
Your comments, please.

Michael Friedlander Bryan Darby, if you look at the Comparison Matrix at you'll see that only the Professional Edition supports OCR, and other desirable features. I think this offer is misleading, and many buyers of the Home Edition will be disappointed that they can't do what the offer implies.

Arlene Manduca I was ready to buy this software because it supports TWAIN and WIA so I can keep updating no matter what I use. Then I saw the posts. Most printer, fax, scanner SW includes printing to a PDF and OCR. People generally only need one protocol. OK PaperScan, how about a better deal with all the functionality? You get BAD points for misleading advertising.. Harumph!

Lisa HERMELINE Hello Arlene, the Pro edition contains all these functionalities so I'm not sure what teh problem is...

Roderick Nicolson Sadly this misdirection about the OCR has been going on for some time now with this seller (look back over 'Older Comments').
Yet the seller is still using misleading information in the sales pitch above, like: 'PaperScan is a universal scanning application with a superb OCR engine'.
Why isn't it made clear that this is referring only to the Pro version and not the Home version also?
Some potential buyers are subsequently led to believe that both versions on offer have OCR engines but this is not the case as the home version does not have this engine.
Come on PaperScan, how about making your sales pitch clearer? Surely you can see by now that it's confusing customers?

William Gorman Lisa HERMELINE You don't seem to be getting the message that potential buyers are sending you. You offer a deal on your home edition but refer to features that are only available in the Pro edition at THREE TIMES THE PRICE of the Home Edition. What people are saying is "How 'bout a deal on the Pro software that is really attractive?" I had to abandon a Canon scanner as it's software was not updated for Windows 7 64 bit. If your software will run that scanner then I'd buy whichever edition will do it. It is not clear to me that the Home edition is anything more than an advertisement to the upgrade to the Pro Edition. With details unavailable, I am not the buyer I could be.

Lisa HERMELINE @William Gorman: Regarding the fact that our add for PaperScan Home was referring to features only available in the Professional Edition (even if it was specified). You can see that it has been corrected last year!:

By the way, we DID offer deals on our Pro edition:
And we still do from time to time.
So stay tuned ;-)

William Gorman Thank you for your reply. I will look for a good price on the pro version. For starters I have downloaded the Free PaperScan program and like the interface. Unfortunately it uses the Canon software that gives me problems with the Canoscan 9000F Flatbed scanner. I need to reinstall that software EVERY TIME I wish to use the scanner. This is not the fault of PaperScan but of Canon. Your program also doesn't connect to the Brother 9130CW scanner I have either. That is the fault of Brother and they just sent an email to update the Firmware of the scanner so I suspect I am not alone with this problem. From my experience I assume that your software will work with any scanner provided the scanner underlying software works. Your program is then not a replacement for the scanner software and merely adds another interface on top of what is already available with the scanner.

Joe McCormick William Gorman. I am using the free version of Paper Scan.
I found that if I click on the Acquire button, it shows 2 selections.
Start Wizard and Quick Scan.
If I select Start Wizard, It will open up my Epson 4490 scanner program.
If I select Quick Scan, it does not open the scanner program.

Peter Zackowski Hey forum users, has anyone successfully tried this with the NEAT scanners? The company has stopped releasing updates for it and I am looking for alternatives. Thanks!
