RightNote

Organize Piles of Info in One Spot

We all have to deal with bits and pieces of information on a daily basis: phone numbers, passwords, to-do lists, webpage snippets, research papers, accounting information, browser bookmarks, source code snippets... it never stops coming! So how do you deal with it all?

The answer is RightNote, and today you can get it at a massive discount!

RightNote allows you to store all your information in a single place and to find this information fast with full text search and highlighted search results. It can even protect sensitive information by putting a lock on selected notes.

RightNote includes different types of notes to store different types of information. There's a word processing note for textual information, a spreadsheet note for accounting info or any type of list, and a source code note for source code snippets. All your notes are stored in a hierarchical tree outline and can easily be moved around and re-organized at a later point.

Have you ever swiped content from a website, only to cringe at the awful way a text editor loses formatting? Not with RightNote! The app is smart enough to preserve images and styles from HTML code, meaning your note looks similar to the source content. Combined with keyboard shortcuts, hotkeys, and frequently used note lists, you'll discover an untapped realm of productivity once you start using RightNote!

Please note folks, the pro version of RightNote includes a number of premium features like webpage capture, indexing of attachments (including PDF, docx, xlsx), multi-notebook search, and a side-by-side view to easily transfer notes between different pages or notebooks. Check the feature comparison to decide which version is right for you!

PeLi I am looking forward to this deal. I use the freeware version now and would very much like to update to the PRO version!
Great deal, thank you BdJ and Bauerapps
Feb 18 at 2:45am
Ralph Bressler WHEN is this coming as it is not listed under ALL DEALS?
Feb 18 at 2:55am
Peter R Will the upgrade to the Pro version also be discounted?
Feb 19 at 1:15am
Roger Rabbit I agree with Peter R's question above - there should be an upgrade discount (Standard to Pro) for those of us who have already purchased, in recognition of the fact we were prepared to go ahead and buy whilst listing go BDJ was still being muted.
Hope you will support your existing customers!
Feb 19 at 1:45am
Rael Bauer Hi Ralph, You should see that RightNote is now listed as an upcoming deal, which means that it will be featured in a couple of days.

Hi Peter R, the discount will apply to all products, so - yes.
Bauerapps Vendor - Feb 19 at 6:09am
Harald Vogel Mr. Bauer, thank you for offering your great product here. I'm looking forward to buy it.

But I'm from Germany. Do you have any plans for localized versions? Also I haven't tried your support yet (good support is very important for me when buying software) but I have found a forum run by the developer can be a great help. Do you have any plans for that?
Feb 19 at 7:08am
JJ Kerneis I have already a recent license for RightNote 2.x standard.
Will be there a discount to RN pro less than 29.97$ ? If yes, at what price ?

Thanks in advance
Feb 19 at 8:38am
Duane Dalian In the feature comparison is says "Import and export notes to common formats".
-Does this include a files and folder option with all of the imbedded attachments included?
-What type of print and preview options are available?
-Are there any special templates or options for working with emails?
Thank you,
Feb 19 at 12:28pm
Bob Roberts I am also looking forward to this deal for RightNote. Thank you for offering it.
Reading the description above and checking the web site I haven't found anything regarding the license terms. Is it a per computer or per user? Can I load on both my laptop and home computer with the same license? Pro version in my case.

Thanks again.
Feb 19 at 2:02pm
Rael Bauer @ Hi Harald: Yes we do have plans for localized versions, just have not really gone ahead with it yet. I'm curious, if you speak English, why is a German version important to you?

re: forums. I guess this is something I debate about with myself. Overall it is a good idea. One of the cons is that often forums tend to get plagued by spam...

@ Hi JJ, Yes the discount will apply to upgrades as well. So it will be $29.95 minus 50%.

@ Hi Duane:
1. I assume you are referring to exporting. So far export is not in a folder structure, although it is something I would like to add soon.
2. I think for this question, the simplest is to take a look at what the program provides via the trial version. If you have any specific requests feel free to contact us.
3. I'm not sure what you are referring to: (a) Importing emails into the program: At this point you need to use the clipper. (b) Email notes to others: So far not, but is on the to do list.

@ Hi Bob, You will come across the license when you install the program; also found in the help file, and also found at the link under "Policy" tab (on this page). It is licensed per user, so no problem to install on multiple computers if you are the only one using the program.

Thanks,

brenda adams I am a Standard version user. I would love to try the Pro version, to see if those extras are things I might want. (And at what price?) Can I load this 30-day Pro version over my Standard and go back safely to the Standard if I do not buy the Pro (when trial period ends)?

PS: I have maybe 7 similar programs and none seem to be as good as yours. I love how I can capture sections of webpages so easily WITHOUT tying up my clipboard (unlike others I've tested)...and how it instantly also grabs the URL (unlike some others I've tested).
I urge folks to try your RightNote. I so love it.
PPS: I have a friend who has used RightNote to create her own personal recipe software...I mean, all her recipes are BEAUTIFULLY arranged within a RightNote notebook. Her method is very sophisticated. This says to me that RightNote uses can be quite varied.
Feb 19 at 7:00pm
brenda adams I installed the download over my existing Standard v2.03 and it brought me up to date on the Standard, but it doesn't appear to be a trial of the PRO version--which is the version I want to test. So, now I'm confused. Isn't this deal and download for the Pro version? I so want to test it out.
Feb 19 at 7:05pm
PeLi @Brenda: Try installing the portable version in a new folder.
Feb 20 at 12:12am
Michael Carter I appreciate the offer, but at Download.com the standard price IS your deal price, not $59. For the record, this gets GREAT reviews there. On my wish list.
Feb 20 at 1:17am
Harald Vogel @Rael Thank you for your answer. A localized version because for some of my only german speaking friends Rightnote would be the ideal tool.

Also I think spam in forums is almost no problem if you have to register first to get access to a forum. Or you could limit it even more if only registerd customers would get access to it.
Feb 20 at 1:25am
KW Yau You said "the discount will apply to all products"

So the Standard edition will be offered with the same discount?
After reading the comparision of features, I think the Standard edition is enough for me.
Feb 20 at 2:03am
Rael Bauer @ Hi Brenda, I have emailed you a trial extension key that will allow you to try out the pro features for 30 days. If you have any problems please contact support directly.

@ Hi Michael, The listed price at Download.com is referring to the Standard version of RightNote, which previously was the only version available.

@ Hi KW, Yes you are correct. The same discount applies to the standard version.
Bauerapps Vendor - Feb 20 at 6:25am
Neil Shapiro I've installed the portable version to try the pro features. Currently, as far as these types of software I use Ecco Pro and Evernote.

Question: Is there an Android version with sync available? I don't like entering notes on my Kindle Fire but I love the ability to at least automatically sync and view my notes from my desktop on the Kindle. That's a deal maker for me, if you have it.

A couple of usage notes: The first thing I tried though is to create an outline using bullets in a note. Outlines are very useful and important. However, unlike most outliners, which indent when you press Tab, yours doesn't seem to. You have to use the toolbar (or maybe some key combo shortcut. I'd prefer the standard way.

Another: I tried to add a jpeg as a virtual node, and it gave me an error: binary files are not supported. It worked fine with a python (.py) file I tried, and that looked to be a nice feature to "catalog" some code. But why not binary files like jpegs?
Feb 20 at 10:59am
Rael Bauer Hi Neil, There is no Android version. RightNote only works on the Windows platform.

Re: bullets: Not sure what you mean. In Word for example, if I press Tab after a bullet it will create a tab, not indent the bullet.

Virtual nodes/notes are intended for editing external text files in-place from RightNote. The following file types are supported for virtual notes: txt, rtf, rvf or plain text such as source code. You could import an image file as an attachment or link.
Bauerapps Vendor - Feb 20 at 4:02pm
Harald Vogel I like RN more and more finding out some great features. When setting up my favorite notebooks I tried what you wrote in the helpfile:

1. You can double click on a file in the "recent files" list to add it to the favorites list.

I tried this with the "File-Open" List and in the Resource-Panel but it was not working. Can you tell me which Recent files you meant and how I get it to work.

Also it would be great if it would be possible to set up also favorite notes to quickly jump to notes somewhere in a subtree or even open a note as a page.
Feb 21 at 11:46am
Rael Bauer Hi Harald, thanks for the feedback.

Actually the instructions you are referring to are a bit out-dated, since the favorites dialog was changed slightly a while ago. When you click on "Add" or "Edit" (in the favorites dialog), at the bottom left is a button which will bring up the list of recently used files. You can double click on one of these items to select it.

Thanks for the suggestions. Will give it some thought.

Louis H I was actually going to pass over this one (thinking to myself - do I really need another app like this) and then decided to give it a try. Very nice application. What really impressed me, though, was that the vendor made all versions, including upgrades, available at the BDJ discount!!! Those of you who have been around BDJ for some time know how often the deals are limited to new purchases of the product offered. So when I find a vendor such as Bauerapps who demonstrates such a willingness to respect and reward current users as well as new users, well, it's easy to decide to become a user of the program offered. The bonus here is this really is a great program and will make my life easier.

Thanks to BDJ and Bauerapps for putting this offer together!
Feb 22 at 2:49am
Roberto damn.. i bite too. Im agree with Louis H.
Feb 22 at 3:10am
Jim McGowan Wow! I had no idea this was coming up on Bits!

Rael, Marek - the creator of the original KeyNote - praised RightNote as the closest working Notes app since KN over at DonationCoder.com. That's about as high a recommendation as I need!

Thanks!

Software Guy Spent some time with rightnote and it is a full featured note management program that distinguishes itself from the crowded field of competition in several ways. With spreadsheet capabilities, it would be a favorite of those that need this capability built in. Next, the dual pane was a very nice feature for writers and I could see how it would be useful specifically for programmers. Of course tthe split pane feature has lots of other uses too. And very convenient is the built in screen clipper for research or surfing clippings from the internet.
The software comes in 3 versions, free standard and pro and the features depend on the version you buy - go here to get the features you need. http://www.bauerapps.com/stdvspro.html The pro list is very pricey - reasonable today on BDJ but otherwise pricey. When you can buy the excellent texnotes from gemx everyday for $20 and it suits the needs of most for premium notes software, the $59.95 of pro rightnotes is definitely pricey. Even gemx beautiful Harmony PIM is only $39.95 every day with a boatload of features including full notes along with all sorts of organizer features.
Therightnotes clipper is nice (std version and pro) but fastone 5.3 free and lightscreen offer similar functionality for free,

And basic notes software such as AllMyNotes (another straightforward favorite) is inexpensive on BDJ and is constantly being improved - I really like their new MULTI icon and checkbox feature.
For modest needs remember the cute and free minipad2! (32 bit only!) or use the ree version of Rightnotes
So how does RightNotes fit in? - the free is a great deal. the standard fits in well with most other notes managers but distinguishes itself with spreadsheet capabilities and the built in clipper as well as note to note linking (some othercompeting software titles have this feature) at a competitive price. the pro adds split panes and can save web pages but at a premium price.
Selection of a note management program is a matter of special features and personal preference. the field is crowded so you can be picky. basic notes fill the bill for most users, but you may find the need for the special features offered by the various programs - and there are many. Treenotes, evernotes, allmynotes, texnotes, treeprojects to name just a few. And there is the unusual Effective Aspects Notes program, recently redesigned with a new lower price of $15 - worth a look. And there is the unusual Notesbrowser.
Try a few and buy the one that suits your needs.
Very thoughtfully the developer has included all versions and the today, and the license is per user. Multiple licenses are further discounted as are the full array of upgrades in this BitsDuJour offer.

Hansjorn Nielsen how long can it take to send me my key, still waiting.
why is it not sent right away
Feb 22 at 5:38am
Nico Westerdale Hansjorn, sorry for the delay, the vendor has been notified and will been in contact with you soon.
BitsDuJour Admin - Feb 22 at 5:40am
marek jedlinski Nico: do you know why RegNow adds a "sales tax" for sales to EU residents?

When I tried to order, RegNow added VAT to the base pricde (which is OK, I'm in the EU), but then adds a $6.89 USD on top of that as a "sales tax". It does that both for the cc and PayPal option. Isn't the sales tax applicable only to residents of certain states in the US?

This is not normal, unless some tax laws changes within the last week or so. Could anyone at BdJ explain or intervene with RegNow, please?
Feb 22 at 6:39am
VLM Software Guy - Good heavens, how do you DO that!!! And over and over again. Thank you for bringing some real clarity to an otherwise VERY confusing product category! ... again.
Feb 22 at 7:13am
Glen Coulthard Just wondering which Rich View component you are using in your software. Most notes apps export well to RTF format, but not so much to Word's docx. Even moderate use of indentation, bullets, numbering, graphics, floating images, paragraph styles, and tables are sometimes troublesome when converted. However, some components are definitely better than others. I do a lot of draft writing in apps like this and then must convert to Word for final polishing, so this is an important requirement for my use.

I know that it's a technical question, but one that I run up against with almost all applications in this category.
-- Glen
Feb 22 at 7:32am
Nico Westerdale marek, I don't know the specifics for this account, as it's the software vendor's account with RegNow that determines the VAT, and not our relationship with either RegNow or the vendor. It could very well be that this vendor has incorporated within the EU, which would determine tax for an EU purchase. Unfortunately I don't have full details. It's not something we have control over.
BitsDuJour Admin - Feb 22 at 7:39am
Jim McGowan OK, before I make the purchase I would like to know whether or not I will be charged "Sales Tax", as well as what that is specifically.

(Anytime extra fess and/or so-called taxes are added, I feel it is important for the vendor to explain exactly what they are - E.g., to whom is the tax paid?0

Thank you.

Jim
Feb 22 at 7:48am
marek jedlinski @Nico: Thank you, I understand. I have contacted RegNow and was asked to provide screenshots, so my understanding is that this may indeed be a glitch.

@Jim: You are told before the purchase. I apologize if I did not make it clear. The Sales Tax is added and listed on the final page before you confirm. It's just that, the tax should not be there in the first place (or more precisely, I've never seen a tax like that added purchases within the EU. We don't have a sales tax like that, we do have VAT.)
Feb 22 at 8:09am
Jim McGowan Thanks Marek, though I would like an answer from Rael if possible. Mainly because the last time I had a question for RegNow they directed me back to the software vendor.

I am in the US but I have never been charged sales tax for software except when I purchased a physical copy in a retail store. Sales tax in the US must be levied only on a state by state basis.

Jim
Feb 22 at 8:27am
Rael Bauer @ marek: Just want to say thanks very much for your approbation. I totally agree with Jim: I don't think I could ask for a better recommendation! RightNote was very much inspired by the plans and ideas for KeyNote 2.0. So thank you!

@ marek, Jim: It is normal for a tax/vat of about $5.5-$6 to be added to orders from GB/EU. If you see something more than this then it should be queried. For US no tax should be added.

@ Glen: The term "Rich view" can be a little confusing to people, because it is very much an editor. The component comes from www.trichview.com, and is as you say used by a number of note taking applications. Although RTF is a standard, I would encourage other developers to allow import/export of rich view files (.rvf) since this would allow transfer between applications without any data loss. re: exporting to word, this is supported by the component, and something I would like to add to the program soon.
Bauerapps Vendor - Feb 22 at 8:43am
Jim McGowan Thank you Rael. Very much appreciated!

Lupke Brother any MS onenote 2010 users who can make a comparison?
Feb 22 at 10:36am
M B I have a question. Is it possible to save files to RightNote?

What I am thinking is to save my save personal budget program file to RightNote as a means to keep it in a safe place.

Is this workable? Is it simply drag-and-drop?

Thanks
Feb 22 at 10:56am
Jean Sibe Just purchased copy of Pro version. Did not like the "Sales Tax" though - it was +23% price increase. Guess we all EU residents need to support Greece?

Hoping to see this program develop even more and focusing on main Windows application rather than making 5 different versions, (iPad, iPhone, Android, Windows Phone), eventually all missing something and development is stalling for main product.

@ M B, I played around and I don't think this is possible, there is no "Save File" feature, you can just open. And if file is unsupported, you can't even open it - you're stuck. I tried with "DLL" file. No errors either.
Feb 22 at 11:49am
Mitchell Kastner Like Glen Coulthard, I use outliners writing tools and export notes to MS Word. With other outliners I copied and pasted web text to RTF notes but some of those notes could not be exported at all much less to MS Word; a colossal waste of time, which put in me in hot water with prospective clients. I need time to test this product out, with the assurance that after 30 days, if it does not suit my needs I can get a refund (perhaps less than a restocking fee as Scrivener charges).Does this program come with a money-back guarantee and if so what are the details of the program?
Feb 22 at 1:20pm
Rael Bauer @ Hi M B, Yes this should work. When you import the file (or drag 'n drop) select to import as Attachment (in the import options dialog). Set up a password in the file properties dialog (under File menu), and then set to protect the note (Tree-Edit Note-Protect=Yes).

The way to retrieve the original file is to use the Export dialog, and make sure you check the option "Include Protected".
Bauerapps Vendor - Feb 22 at 1:31pm
Rael Bauer @ Hi Mitchell, at this point in time I have not committed to a money-back guarantee. With BDJ deal, I'm not sure if it may result in a negative balance. I can make an exception for you. Alternatively, I would be happy to create a discount coupon for you after you have done sufficient testing.
Bauerapps Vendor - Feb 22 at 1:59pm
Simone Williams I purchased this little gem and am sorry I purchased it before this discount. All in all a fabulous program!
Feb 22 at 2:28pm
Mitchell Kastner The discount coupon would work provided I could testdrive the pro edition; otherwise, I would be flying blind on the added features available in the pro edition. Plz advise if the pro edition can be used as 30 day trial otherwise I would opt for the money back guarantee. In either case, you have been very fair.
Feb 22 at 2:55pm
Stefan TesterAWC I am joined in too. Thanks for that deal!

BTW: that what is first called "sales tax" was at the end the VAT (19% for germany)

That are 30$ + 5,70 VAT for germany
.
Feb 22 at 2:55pm
Jean Sibe @Mitchell Kastner, it can, just install and click on "Evaluate"

@ M B / Rael: I tested with your new instructions and it works fine with "Export", I can retrieve "DLL" file. Thanks and sorry for wrong info...
Feb 22 at 3:22pm
Rael Bauer @ Mitchell: The trial version = Pro version.

@ Jean: No problem. What you say is valid, in that I have been thinking of adding a more direct "Save note as..." type of function, since one might not realise to use the Export for this.
Bauerapps Vendor - Feb 22 at 3:39pm
marek jedlinski @Nico: resolved and ordered. Thanks!
Feb 22 at 4:35pm
Alan Sawyer I bought RightNotes on 4/10/2009. I don't actually know what version I bought but would like to upgrade.
How can I best find out what the cost would be and make it happen?

My receipt doesn't mention a version.

It was order 1239379301-12888-536163.
Feb 22 at 4:37pm
Rael Bauer @ Hi Alan, depends if you want to upgrade to the std or pro version of RightNote. (You were previously using v1 which is closer to v2 std)

When ordering, select "Upgrade from version 1 to version 2 Std" for the std, and "Upgrade from version 1 to version 2 Pro" to upgrade to the pro.
Bauerapps Vendor - Feb 22 at 4:59pm
Alan Sawyer I will go all the way. Pro it is.
Thanks
Alan

I paid $29.97 for RightNote Pro 2.3.1. And I'm glad I did. But I will continue to use another Personal Information Manager that I only learned about from Bits Du Jour because MyInfo also supports tables but it allows me to put comments at the top of the web pages it downloads. I will also continue to use MetaProducts Inquiry because it does a perfect job of downloading every individual web page. Unfortunately, Inquiry does not yet support tables in notes nor does it allow comments to appear at the top of saved web pages. I see that RightNote Pro is updated frequently and I especially like the downloadable web page improvements made recently. I see that suggestions are welcome. Good. I will submit mine. I'm very glad to know about and buy a copy of RightNote Pro and hope I will soon be using it every day.
Feb 22 at 6:04pm
Jim McGowan Darn! 48 hours for the license key?! Also, why does RegNow need an address and phone number for a download paid with PayPal?

I hate Digital River!

Jim
Feb 22 at 7:56pm
James Kenney If I were to run the portable version from inside of Dropbox, is there any protection against my forgetting to close a copy on one computer before opening it on another?
If not, it would seem to be a very simple change to add it.
It does not need to handle the error condition in any way, just tell the user that another copy is using the database, and forbid access until the problem is fixed.
You could also give the user the option to continue at his own risk, to handle the condition where the program was not exited properly.
This could be implemented by the simple method of a .lock file.
For all I know, this is already done, I have not looked for any temp files in the program folder yet!

Can you guess that I have already bought the program and am using the portable version as I post this!
So for, I am impressed!!!
Thanks!

Merle One Hi,
I have a question regarding the import of full webpages : so far I found it's only possible using the hotkey from within IE. Is there a more manual way, when I already have the full URL I want to capture ?
Thanks.
Feb 23 at 2:46am
Lupke Brother has anybody compared RN with MS OneNote 2010?
Feb 23 at 2:59am
Steven Avery Hi Folks,

Nice to see the extension. I bought yesterday, Pro.

This is a great Bits, one I was waiting for while my notes got a bit stale (the full price of the pro is a bit of scratch, with the BIts it is fine). At Donationcoder we have looked at a number of notesprogram, almost semi-obsessively, looking for the right features and balance and plesant use.

Rightnotes is overall perhaps the single crispest pure notes+++ program (with special features like spreadsheets and tables, and with fine tab usage and a lot more). I look forward to playing with more features like the web clipping, which varies a lot in note program utility.

In the long run, there is nothing wrong in using more than one program, as long as you try to use them for alternating functions (my special research here, my PIM there). However, if one program looks like it can handle most everything with enough clearness, Rightnote is in the lead.

To be fair, others are very good. For regular light use, nothing wrong with the free versions of Rightnote, Treedbnotes or Keynote-NF (free only). On the paid level, Mybase and TreeProjects and some mentioned by SoftwareGuy and others get special note. MyInfo was also mentioned above as having a couple of good features. Whatever you use, you prefer it to be in reasonably active development, which varies a lot.

However, overall, as a pure note-based program, I think it is fair to say that Rightnote is, today #1 , with excellent ongoing development and communication from Rael.

A little forum (even Yahoogroups or Googlegroups, very easy to moderate without the daily concerns of a web forum) is recommended. Where we can chat directly about features and use and development. Alternatively you could use Donationcoder as a talking spot, the way Linkman-Outertech and Chameleon and a few others do. We would like to see you more visible in a friendly environment.

====

Glen, you brought out an interesting point about RTF export to .docx. I usually export to forums or Eudora, so I do not have that problem, but I would be interested in your reporting back (or writing up on Donationcoder ?) your experiences trying to find a good tool for that purpose.

Rael Bauer @ Hi Jim, "allow up to 48 hours for delivery", although usually it should be quite soon after order ;)

@ Hi James, first, when working with Dropbox, I would recommend that you only keep actual note files in Dropbox, not the main application, and not backups (see Options-Backups to set the backup directory).

If a file is changed on one computer, then you should receive a notification on the other computer that the file has changed and "it is recommended that you reload the file now..", so that you are working with the latest copy on that computer.

@ Hi Merle, we have just recently added the webpage capture feature, so at the moment this is the only way to do it. We do hope to add more options over time like you say.

JoGirl JoGirl I am a little confused on how many licenses to purchase. Forgive me if you have already answered this, but, is it one license per user or one license per user's computer, thus if I have more than one computer, I need to purchase several licenses.
Feb 23 at 8:03am
Bob Jones Does RightNote do global searching across databases (and not just within a database)?
Feb 23 at 8:03am
Rael Bauer @ Hi JoGirl, It is one license per user. You can use it on multiple computers if you are the only one using it.

@ Hi Bob, Yes, this is a feature of the pro version. You can see search results of a database/notebook that is not currently open, and then view a specific note from a database that is not open. The help file "Multi-notebook search" topic has more info and pictures.

DroidLuvr It sounds like there are a lot of people here who have a lot of experience with various versions of this program. I've never heard of it, but it sure sounds a lot like Microsoft OneNote (or Evernote without the cloud storage/sync part...)

Can anyone tell me about why this program would be different and/or better than those programs?? It seems to me this would not help me out if I already have OneNote and Evernote?
Feb 23 at 10:22am
Rael Bauer Yes, please, an forum would be nice to have.
And i have an wish: add scheduler to your app.
I want to be remind on some of my notes.
Bauerapps Vendor - Feb 23 at 12:59pm
Rael Bauer Hi Droid, Good question, I will give you my thoughts/opinions.

RightNote is more similar to OneNote, and distinctly different to EverNote.

In EverNote your notes are kind of flying around in a big sea, and locating a note is search based: either by search term or/and tags. It's hard to group your notes together in a consistent, well planned and organised manner. I feel EverNote can be well suited to "grabbing info", but then the next step is to sift "the wheat from the chaff". Move important info to a more permanent storage system, with greater organising and structuring power. For little bits and pieces of info this may not be so necessary, but when you are doing more intensive research, web clipping, notes, information processing etc.. you want and need your info to be well structured, and you gain insight and understanding by having your info structured in this way.

With regard to OneNote: Here the programs are much more comparible: I have not used it that much but I can still offer some pointers as to how RightNote is different, and why you would want to include it in your information handling arsenal.

- I feel the tree control gives more organisation power compared to OneNote's "outline view" (don't know what they call it). OneNote's outline view seems well adapted for a small number of topics with not that much indenting. It seem's hard to manage larger numbers of topics and greater levels of organisation.
- One of OneNote's key features is typing in text anywhere in a document. Well, this has it's uses. On the other hand, I usally prefer compiling information in a standard type of editor. Having the ability to move info around all the time can be annoying..;)

Some features unique to RightNote:
- Not sure if this are available in OneNote: ability to protect specific notes.
- Dedicated spreadsheet note for storing account information, any type of lists, with powerful functions (e.g. Fill and standard Excel functions) and ability to import/export to Excel.
- Source code note type (would be important for programmers
- Dedicated webpage note type: stores a webpage exactly as original layout, not just extracting the text and images.
- Specific tools to re-organise notes within a notebook or between notebooks.
- Small self contained and Portable version
- Ability to contact author and make requests and see them implemented.
- There is also a focus to import data from the file system, and also work with external files as part of your work-flow and thereby be able to handle it more easily, something I don't think you can do as easily with OneNote.
- And more to come...

Hope this is useful for you.

Stephane M Hi,
I just sent an email to the support regarding an order issue.
Thank you in advance for your help!

Neil Shapiro I did the trial. As tempting as it is, here's why I won't be buying, in the interest of giving feedback: Note that if I didn't find the app somewhat interesting, I wouldn't be taking the time to write this...it's in the hopes of improving it so that it might be useful to me in the future.

I have no vested interest other than as a user of these apps. Currently, I use Ecco, which is very old but still works and hard to beat. And Evernote for web page clipping. And "The Journal 5" for journaling/notes

The most natural way for me to write notes are in outline form. Ecco is the best at this. You can fake it in other notetakers using a bullet or numbered lists in a note, but in this app the behavior of bullets is awkward to enter. I mentioned this before, and Rael didn't quite understand my point, so I wanted to elaborate. Try it in Word, Open office or Google Docs. Start with a bullet, type the text, press enter, you get another bullet. Then instead of typing text, hit Tab. The bullet indents automatically to the next level. This isn't what RightNote does. Note that Evernote does this in this manner as well, conveniently.

Also, there's no concept of date in the notes. The Daily Journal is ideally organized in this regard. The tree is actually a calendar, and there's a traditional month at a time, and you can see your notes in these context/organizations. Great for organizing by date. Full text search really takes care of the rest for me. There are obviously times when I want to organize by other structure, but I also ALWAYS want access to notes by date. One workaround for this would be to have a quick keyboard shortcut that inserts the current date. Then you could quickly do that at the top of a note. But you really need to keep create/modify dates for the notes too IMHO.

I do like the relatively clean interface, and the inclusion of the programmers syntax highlighting. Perhaps that's why I keep considering it...maybe I'd use it for code snippets. But the rest per above is just a show stopper for me. I'll check it out in future versions.

Some bugs I noted in testing:
- Screen capture does not work right in a dual monitor situation. It's stuck on one monitor.
- After capturing a web page, the middle pane (I had the search pane open) was not resizing properly, leaving a gap between panes and not making use of the space, as I maximized or resized the window.

Anyway, I'll keep an eye on the app to see how it progresses.

Rael Bauer Hi Folks, I just want to alert you that there is currently a problem from RegNow's side with email delivery at the end of an order. Some part of their server system seems down, although the actual placement of orders seems to work ok. Just hang on to your order id, and we will attend to you (issue license keys) as soon as the problem is resolved. Thanks for your patience.
Bauerapps Vendor - Feb 23 at 5:20pm
Rael Bauer Hi Neil, Thanks for the valuable feedback and suggestions.

I now understand what you mean re the tab/indent issue. I will see if this can be fixed.

I also agree being able to view notes by date is useful and important. Currently there is the ability to view history in the Resource Panel. This is limited, but there are plans for added functionality. FYI, note creation and modified dates are stored in the application. You can view the creation date in the header panel.(Right click header panel for options).

Thanks for the bug reports.

carl thorpe If you are still around, can you speak to the advantages of your program over the recent MyBase + Addons pack that was recently offered here on Bits Du Jour?

I know I need a program like either yours or MyBase (and I did purchase MyBase), but I was wondering if you could help me see why yours was better?

Thanks!!

S B Be careful when ordering: you may end up with extras that you don't want.

I somehow got charged for "extended download" which I do not want (from yesterday I've not yet gotten a response from either the processor, RegNow or the developer, Bauerapps)

Sadly this can turn enthusiasm into feeling cheated.
Feb 23 at 11:18pm
Nico Westerdale Due to the overwhelming response Bauerapps has agreed to extend this deal for another day - Enjoy!
BitsDuJour Admin - Feb 24 at 12:00am
brenda adams SB and all:
I just ordered the Pro upgrade for myself. The developer is very helpful. I love the new entire webpage grab feature. (I've always loved the grab features RightNote offers, and now to the the entire webpage grab, for my uses, will be a real boon.

As far as ordering, here is what I saw. Itemized out is the item itself plus, next line down, the Extended Download (with a Trash Can icon sitting next to it). You have to clear the ED by clicking on the trash can. When you do that, it immediately clears the item and a new amount is summed up. You then fill in your payment data (like credit card info) and then are taken to the next page where AGAIN the itemization is shown and you are to Accept or Reject the itemization.

You must have been eagerly hitting enter a bit too fast to read the screen as you ordered. Maybe this will be a very cheap lesson for your future. But I do hope the Reg folks help you to undo this...this one time. I know it's not the developer who did this to you--he seems like a really good guy from my past dealings with him. You do really need to carefully see/read/scrutinize what you are signing up for. The program is a good one.
Feb 24 at 8:16am
carl thorpe Unfortunately, the order page was not giving me the trashcan for the extended download service in Firefox. In Opera, it was there, but then there was no purchase/submit/buy button to actually complete the order.

@Nico - 11 hours ago you posted that the discount had been extended. Is that the case?
Feb 24 at 11:21am
Peter Gabriel 20 hours gone by and still no registration email. Is RegNow still having problems?
Feb 24 at 12:09pm
James Kenney It says that the deal has been extended again, but the page says expired, and the main page does not list it.
I have been trying to send people here, but they cannot buy it!
Feb 24 at 12:50pm
DPinAZ I had downloaded the trial version 2.3.1 of RightNote, and based on using it decided to buy it when it became available on Bits du Jour. As with several others, the purchase process did not work correctly, and while it appears I was charged for the software, I did not get a link for downloading, nor did I get a license key.

Since then, the vendor sent me an email with a link to the software, but still no license key.

I downloaded the software from the provided link, but when installing and running it I find that it is an old version of the software (Ver 2.1.1) copyright 2010, and that it had overwritten the new version that was already installed on my computer. When running it, it says that it is an expired trial version, and that the file it is trying to open is from a newer version and may not work correctly.

Is the deal here on Bits du Jour for the old 2010 software even though there is a newer version available?
Feb 25 at 10:48am
brenda adams I just got my email with license.
Don: Sounds like a glitch. Also sounds like developer is had overwhelming response. I have heard from him promptly so I know he is there trying make folks happy and will get to you.
You could just uninstall and go get the full Standard trial at the developers website, no? I bet the offer will be up again soon because so many people seem to want it.
Feb 25 at 3:11pm
Rael Bauer @ carl: There was a bit of a technical glitch at the beginning of the second day of the offer - Nico's post did not appear then and only appeared at the end of the sale (although there was a notice at the top of the promotion).

I hope to post a reply to your other question soon.

@ James: see reply to carl - Thanks anyway for your support.

@ Peter: The problem has been resolved, and license keys have been issued to all those who ordered. Contact support if there are still any issues.

@ Don: The problem has been resolved and you should have received your license key. The download link with your order is a recent version but not the latest. I will try and resolve this issue with RegNow. You can download the latest version from the website.

The deal included all upgrades to version 2.xx until 3.0.
Bauerapps Vendor - Feb 25 at 5:17pm
Rael Bauer @ S B: I am happy to refund your purchase, and then re-issue you an equivalent discount coupon. The same applies to anyone else that ended up with something they didn't want.

There is a warning notice on our buy now page with more information about the extended download service - although this would not help BDJ's buyers since they are directed directly to an order page. So the above offer still stands.
Bauerapps Vendor - Feb 25 at 9:19pm
DPinAZ Rael - Thank you for all of your help! I downloaded the newer version, installed it, and entered the license key you sent. All's well! Seems to work perfectly.

I'm looking forward to learning all the features - I can already think of so many uses for RightNote.

I know this had to have been a huge hassle for you - thanks for sticking with it to get it all straightened out.
Feb 25 at 9:32pm
M B I am wondering if you will be running RN on Bits in the future, I am not looking for a date, but more that it will happen again. Well, if you have a time frame in months would be nice as well! :o)

Thanks
Feb 26 at 3:48am
DPinAZ I have been unable to clip information from websites, and get a message that says something like "browser address is not found." Could this happen if the computer is behind a proxy server? If that is the problem, is there a way to fix it? I don't see any options for designating a proxy server.

Thank you.
Mar 22 at 2:53pm
Rael Bauer Hi DPinAZ: Sure, if you are behind a proxy server then the program will not be able to download files without working through the proxy. So far there is no special handling for this but we can add such in future version. Regards
Bauerapps Vendor - Mar 24 at 2:25pm
Arlene Manduca How does one retrieve the notes. Can you do a text string search on all notes or must you know which folder it's in like on a PC.

I have used Info Select and that will find any note of any type if you remember any of the words. Thanks
Yesterday at 4:03pm
Rael Bauer Hi Arlene,

To answer your question: Both. To start you organise your notes into a folder like / tree structure (with multiple pages as well), so you can easily locate your notes that way.

Then there is a search function which will show you notes that contain text you are looking for. You click on a result to go to that note. Take a look at the picture at the top of the page for an illustration.
