What is Evolution?

Modern evolutionary theory focuses on the gradual and cumulative changes that occur in populations over time. These changes are the result of natural selection. This is a process which increases the number of organisms with beneficial traits, which allow them to survive and reproduce in specific environments. This means that these organisms leave more offspring than those who don't have these beneficial traits. This could cause a genetic change that could eventually result in new species.

The term "evolution" is often ascribed to the notion of "survival of the fittest" which implies that those people who are the most adapted to a particular environment will be more successful than those who are not well-adapted. This is only one of the many ways in which evolution can occur.

Another common way the term "evolution" is used is to suggest that a species will eventually progress from one state of being to the next state of being. This type of view of evolution could be referred to as anagenetic or cladogenesis. This is not backed by the definition of evolution that is scientifically accepted. Instead, the scientific theory of evolution concentrates on the changes that take place in populations over time and these changes are the result of genetic mutations and natural selection.

Charles Darwin was one of the scientists who backed this idea. Alfred Russel Wallace who developed the macroevolution theory believed this was the only way in which the higher forms of living could have evolved.

A concept must be able stand against rigorous tests and evidence to be considered a theory. The evidence of evolution has stood the test of time and has been backed by countless studies in a wide range of scientific disciplines, ranging from biology to geology, chemistry to astronomy. In actual fact, evolution is accepted as one of the foundations of science today, and it is backed by the vast majority of scientists worldwide. However, many people have misconceptions about the theory of evolution, specifically how it is related to religion.


What is the Theory of Evolution (Evolutionary Theory)?

Evolution is an explanation in science of the way living things change over time. It relies on a number of well-established observations such as the fact that more offspring are often produced than can possibly survive and that individuals differ from each other in their physical characteristics (phenotype) and that distinct traits have different rates of survival and reproduction; and that traits can be passed on to future generations. These findings are supported by the increasing body of evidence from molecular biology, palaeontology, functional morphology, climatology and geology.

The theory of evolution through natural selection was initially conceived by Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace in the late 19th century to explain how organisms adapt to their biological and physical environments. The process of evolution is a gradual shift in the proportions of genetically diverse individuals within a species over time. This change is a result of natural selection of those who are better adapted to their environment. The individuals who are more adaptable have a better chance of survival and reproduction. As more individuals survive and reproduce their genes become more prevalent in the population. This process is sometimes referred to as "survival for the fittest."

According to the theory of evolution the mutations that cause genomic variation are the primary material of evolutionary change. These mutations can occur randomly or under the influence of the environment. When mutations are random, the resulting allele frequencies may vary from generation to generation. When an alteration is beneficial, it will increase the frequency of the allele, which causes it to spread throughout the population.

These changes in allele frequency could lead to new species as time passes. The new species will evolve and develop into newer forms. This is known as macroevolution. The creation of new species is often due to changes in the environment that make certain resources accessible or creates new environmental issues. It is not only a theory, it is a powerful collection of decades of observation and accumulated data that has been proven and tested. No matter what people believe or deny about the theory of evolution scientists continue to research and gather new information in order to further know the story of life on Earth. This information will aid scientists to understand how to avoid future global catastrophes and how to best use the resources of our planet. This information will also allow us to better serve the needs and wants of the people living on our planet.
