Michael K Hi Folks, I've been using various Acronis ibackup programs for years and have ben happy with then, until now.

I've have to do a restore using their Backup & Restore Program and it won't let me restore one of the logical drives only. That never used to be a problem but now it seems to be so and therefore I'm looking for a good alternative program.

Any reviews and thoughts about Arkbackup Pro would be appreciated from those who have given it a whirl and even just put the trial through its paces, would be most apprecited.

And as a note to the developer, would I be able to easily restore just one one the logical drives on a single phyical drive from within a single full backup set that was made of the total physial hard drive. I hope that makes sense.

If you were using Acronis and backing up a logical partition, you were probably making an exact "image" of that partition. I have not used Acronis in the past, but many people I know have used it with great results. However, there does seem to be some issues with the most recent version of Acronis.

From what I gleen from Derek's write-up on this website, ArkBackup is basically a "data" backup program with a lot of bells and whistles. It will backup your data and registry and various system settings, but will NOT make a restorable image of an entire partition, including your OS system partition.

That being said, my alternative to Acronis at this point would be to try the "Macrium Reflect Free" version to do an image backup of your partitions. It has worked flawlessly for me for a number of years! Furthermore, you can mount those images easily from within the program and copy any data you might want in the case of an emergency like you described.

It's also important to backup your data files as a separate entity. That's where a program like ArkBackup comes in handy. It seems to give you the ability to archive just what data you need in a very handy interface. However, this can be done manually too with enough saavy and disicpline. Unfortunately, most of us don't have enough of either ... LOL. That's why a program like ArkBackup can really be a life-saver!

Eddie Tex Just to add to Thomas' note, a good back-up strategy should involve both disk imaging and data backup/archiving. Disk imaging is vital if you need to restore your entire system (if for example it has become unstable or infected). Data backup is something that should be done more frequently for the sake of important files that might get accidentally deleted or if a prior version is needed.

I too was once an Acronis user but was eventually turned off by their "upgrade every year" strategy. The recommendation for "Macrium Reflect Free" is a good one for imaging.

Garry Camps what advantages does this offer over the backup program built into windows 7 ?. can you create a bootable cd or dvd or other media to restore windows back to a bootable state.

does this support differential or incremental backups and does it support backing up to removable media eg. cd,dvd, usb drives etc

does it use a hardware footprint or require online activation.

RE: MACRIUM

I've done three Macrium restores from the system (XP) partition and they've all restored e x a c t l y to the date they were burned. It's really amazing how something works and you stick with it. LOL

Matt Hello All,

I'm testing the 'Demo' version of ArkBackup Pro and have encountered a strange problem when checking for updates from within the program.

When I click on the 'Check for updates' button, ArkBackup doesn't check its own update information. Instead it opens my ASUS motherboard application and attempts to connect to the Internet to see if my BIOS is up-to-date, Really strange.

I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem when checking for updates from within ArkBackup. I've emailed the developer concerning this but haven't heard anything yet.

Michael K Hi Thomas & Eddie,

Thank you both very much for your detailed thoughts and suggestions which are very much appreciated.

I do backups regularly and here is the scenario I faced that got me irritated with Acronis Backup and Restore 10.

My wife's laptop became unstable. It has one physical drive and 3 logical drives within it, all of which were backed up.

However, it was only the "C" partition I wanted to restore as the "D" partition with the data on it was ok. To find a stable "C" drive that I had backed up, I needed to go back to one I'd made around the middle of January which would have been fine except Acronis would not let me restore "C" alone. Their software forced me to restore the data drive :"D" as well which I did not want to do as I did not want data as of mid Jan. D is in reality just a bunch of folders and I did what Acronis forced me to do and consequently it restored all partitions as of mid Jan and then I had to go back and drag and drop the latest data folders I had backed up separately which I would not have had to do had Acronis allowed me to just restore the "C" drive alone.

I hope that makes sense and you can get the gist of my story and frustration with Acronis Back-up & Restore 10

Eddie Tex Michael K, that's terrible. It sounds like you did a "full disk backup" and Acronis would only allow a "full disk restore." I would definitely recommend replacing Acronis with Macrium Reflect Free. Far less headache in my opinion. When it comes to disk imaging... simple and reliable is always better.
