Terry McMorrow Program has interesting features and I was considering replacing my current DBF viewer
Pros
- SQL Queries - Works well once you learn to completely highlight the
- Filter Row along top of fields - Great Idea - Even allows filters like 1
- Has good set of file minipulation functions Append, Copy , Insert, delete etc…
Cons
- Column sorting changes sort in actual table - This is a deal breaker! When I want to view the table and sort by different columns to see different data this program re-creates the Table each time - very bad implementation.
- No recently viewed files
- If you load two tables for comparison that have the same name you cannot switch between them.
- Tables are not in tabs across top like similar programs making it harder to move among them.
- Compare Files Function only compares Fields not the actual records
- Generate SQL Scripts is almost useless – You can select a checkbox – lets say Create Table and it will produce the script to reproduce that table but it will not let you make any changes to the generated script! There is no way to create a select script. Basically it is used to create a script to create a table. I guess you could save the script to a file and edit there but this generate SQL is way to limited.
The sorting issue is my main reason for not even considering this program any further.
I Guess I could get around the sorting issue by writing a query like
Select * From c:\Test.DBF order by InvNumber, price
But since other viewers do not have this issue the benefits do not outwweigh the cons

Oleg Zhechkov Hi Terry, and thank you for your interest! Sorry for delay - it's a weekend.

1. Column sorting changes sort in actual table
We'll discuss it.

2. No recently viewed files
Drop-down menu next to Open File tool button.

3. If you load two tables for comparison that have the same name you cannot switch between them.
TY, this will be fixed in the next version. But anyway now you can switch between table windows with View - Next/ Previous Window (Ctrl+Shift+N and Ctrl+Shift+P) commands.

4. Tables are not in tabs across top like similar programs making it harder to move among them.
DBF Commander has MDI interface. This means, that you can put tables' window as you want, e.g. - one above another, or one left to other, etc. "Similar programs" show one table at once, that's why you cannot view 2 or more tables at once, for instance, to compare the data. But anyway, as you think it is useful, we'll try to think out about smth like this.

5. Compare Files Function only compares Fields not the actual records
Yes, this is the feature is destined to - compare DBF files' structure. For comparing data you can use SQL queries, filter, etc.

6. Generate SQL Scripts is almost useless
When you check or uncheck some option - both CREATE and INSERT statements are recreated with updated parameters. So how you can imagine: you made some changes, then checked some option - and all of your changes have beed replaced with recreated SQL statement? This feature is intended for creating a table at a DB and inserting rows with data of the DBF file. So you can create the statements (CREATE/INSERT) you need, save this SQL text to a file, then open this file in your DBMS Enterprise Manager, _make_any_changes_, and execute the final SQL.

There is no way to create a select script
I'm not sure that this is an essential feature... You have a table with fields 'f1', 'f2', 'f3'. Do you mean that you need the program to automatically generate a script like 'SELECT f1,f2,f3 FROM table1'?

Also - in the hard to believe category
Terry, we're giving one-year license for just $19.60. Does "similar program" of "this type of software" provide the same functionality for such price? ;-)

Best regards,
Oleg Zhechkov.

Terry McMorrow Hi Oleg

I was excited to see a DBF viewer with SQL like Queries and spent my time to test and try it and was surprised at some of the shortfalls of the program. I know that you can get them fixed though so some of those shortfalls could become a strength. Column filter along the time is fantastic idea and helps drill down a table quickly. Sorting is a huge issue which I cannot believe others have not commented on before. My bad for missing the drop down for recent files - (I have already uninstalled so I cannot comment further on that). Instead of Compare files the command should be compare Structure or compare File Structure.
Most other programs of this type you would buy the program and after a year you would still be able to use the program but not get access to new version unless you update. This is good because the program designer would then need to make the program better and add more features so that I am enticed to upgrade. Out of respect to you I will not mention other similar software here since you are paying to be listed and they are not. It would be easy enough to find them with an internet search.

Oleg Zhechkov Hi, Terry!

was surprised at some of the shortfalls
I'm not sure what do you mean under "shortfalls", but when a user of DBF Commander Pro asks us about some feature to be implemented, or he've found a bug - the next version contains the implementation has been asked. You can take a look at http://dbf-software.com/v...story.html - real people mentioned there. So if the app contains some shortfall, I'm sure that some of users would ask to fix it.
BTW, we already began to implement the tabs for tables you've requsted for.

Sorting is a huge issue which I cannot believe others have not commented on before
You won't believe, but it's true :) No one of users during 3.5 years didn't ask for sorting like as you need. But as I've said in prev post, we'll try to implement it.

and after a year you would still be able to use the program
This current type of licensing we're using about 2 months. And there are no dissatisfied customers for now - you're first. But, if there will be more people who think as you do - well, we will be forced to change the licensing scheme.

Best regards,
Oleg Zhechkov.

Stephane M Hi,
I wanted to give it a try but the trial does not run under virtual machines so I think I will pass as I do not want to install software on my main machine without testing them before. Too bad :-(

Oleg Zhechkov Hi, Stephane!
What do you afraid of? The installer doesn't contain any viruses or malware - all software is being scanned before addition to the BDJ. Also, DBF Commander uninstalls completely from your PC - it doesn't leave any of it's files.

Best regards,
Oleg Zhechkov.
