Louis H How come  your Caricature Studio Software package is listed as $39.95 and this one is listed as $249.00?

What is the difference between the two apps?

Thank you.

Gary Weldon Louis, the difference is that NPS is professional event photography software that has many advanced features and functions not available in Caricature Studio. It has everything needed to capture, edit and print, plus business management tools. It's essentially a business in a box. Caricature Studio is more of a consumer-level application.

Jason Howard In case you missed the licensing policy (above) note the following (from the Novelty Photo Website)

Important Disclaimers: Before purchasing, please understand that the yearly license is not upgradeable to the unrestricted license. The program will cease to launch at the conclusion of the license period. To continue use, another license must be purchased. Note that the licensed versions of the software are shipped and not available as a download.

Gary Weldon That is true under normal circumstances, however for this promotion we will extend the unrestricted license with no time limitations. Regarding the media being shipped only, we changed the strategy in order to make the offer available here. Thus a download will be made available.

Louis H Thank you Gary for you quick responses. Regardless of my hesitations at the moment, it is a plus to know you are one of those vendors willing to be around to interact with potential new customers. It bodes well of what kind of customer support will be available for those who make the purchase.

Just to be clear....

If I purchase this as a yearly license, through this BDJ offer, I will be allowed at a later date to upgrade to an unrestricted license? If yes, at what cost?

(i.e., will there be any discount allowed or will I need to pay the full price in effect at the time of my upgrade? And will this be true during any point in time during that first year of use?)

If I choose not to upgrade to an unrestricted license by Oct 3 2011, or if I do not purchase another yearly license....

(is that even an option, and if so, will there be any sort of discount for current users)

....by that date, the program itself will cease to function? (I.e., I will lose ALL use of the program itself until such time as I purchase another license, be it a yearly one or an unrestricted one?)

Here is what your FAQs say....

"For yearly licenses and returns, the serial number will become invalidated and the program will cease to function."

I apologize in advance if I am not being clear s to what is of concern to me here. I am asking these questions as it sounds (and I allow that I am still not hearing you right) as if what I am being asked to do is either pay almost $500 up front (either now or in the future) to have a lifetime or unrestricted license or, after this BDJ discount offer, to pay around $250 a year for the right to use this software to sell royalty-free novelty images. If I do neither, then after October 3, 2011 the serial number will be invalidated, I will lose the right to produce royalty-free novelty images on a commercial level, and the program itself will cease to function? (I.e., not convert to the home use non-commercial version?)

Thanks again for your willingness to be around here to answer our questions.

Gary Weldon Hi,

Just to clarify, BDJ customers will receive an unrestricted license. You will not need to renew in a year or pay another yearly license fee. The terms as described on our site do not apply to the BDJ promotion. The serial validation is something we control on our end, so there's no worries with the program ceasing to function after a year unless we initiate it. We just came out of beta recently, so we're excited to offer this promotion.

Louis H $99 for an unrestricted license?

WHOA!!!!! :)

SIGN ME UP!!!!

That is a fantastic offer and one I simply cannot refuse.

I'm glad I asked for clarification! Seriously, I would really like to give this program/concept a try, but right now am quite restricted to how much I can invest in potential business ventures.

It really does pay to stay aware of what is going on here at BDJ!!!!

Louis H Hold the presses....

I went to download the demo for testing and apparently there is no demo?

So additional questions......

Will there be the same 30-day money-back guarantee for the BDJ download version, and how easy will it be to request and get it taken care of should the need arise since I cannot make sure the program will run on my system before making the purchase?

Thanks.

Gary Weldon Louis, I can explain. NPS is a high-end niche product for event photography business. It features camera tethering, excellent green screen, print packages, attraction tools, head-on-body, caricature and comic effects, face swap, Warhol effects, iPod-type silouhette effects, and a host of other functions. It's probably not very typical of what you find on BDJ because it really isn't meant for the general consumer market. It's not an impulse item. But since Iconico was gracious enough to feature it, we went for it. Event photography software typically runs several hundreds of dollars. Our original strategy was to offer as media-only, in order to protect our product. However we've since changed up our strategy a bit and compiled a downloadable version and a demo version. I will provide the demo link to BDJ tonight. The 30-day guarantee applies to all purchases. In the case of a refund request we will disable the product remotely by invalidating the serial number on our server. The customer then runs the auto-update function within the application. Once verified, we are happy to issue the refund. I hope that addresses your concerns.

Louis H Gary,

I really do appreciate your willingness to make your product available at such a discount AND to be willing to respond with clarifications, not only on what your product actually does, but also on what your licensing policy is.

While I am not currently at the level of graphic artist where I would feel comfortable attempting to make a living at it, I am due to retire in a few years and have realized that I love photography and so am taking steps today to prepare possible ways to supplement my retirement.

Where I live we have numerous small local festivals during the late Spring through the early Fall and I see real potential for being able to utilize your software, not only in the context of a self-run business venture, but also in connection with various community activities where it could perhaps help raise funds for our local schools and our volunteer fire and rescue squads.

So I deeply appreciate your willingness to go the proverbial extra mile in an effort to introduce your software to the folks who follow the daily offerings here at BDJ. Such a response on your part leaves me with a willingness to go ahead and commit to picking up a copy of your software next Sunday. And if I never get around to using it in a more professional profit-based fashion, well, I know my grand-kids will love it! And to see them smile and hear them laugh is worth a lot more than $99.

Thank you again for your response.

Gary Weldon I'd like to add a few notes for trial users:

If you have a supported DSLR camera, please be sure to try the live capture and preview function. This is a GREAT utility for super fast work flow. If you own another camera brand, please see the Help section for instructions to set up a hot import folder.

Additionally, I encourage you to test the green screen function. I will provide some sample green screen images for testing purposes. We put a lot of time and effort into this function to ensure excellent keying results, equal to or better than other professional chromakey applications.

Please feel free to ask questions about particular functions.

Louis H Gary,

Thanks for uploading a demo version. Installed and is running without problems on Win 7 Professional 64 bit. It is obvious to me there is a depth here that will take me some time to fully explore, and yet I was up and running with the basics within moments of starting the program. Like I posted above, my grand-kids (and their friends) are going to love this! :)

An extensive help file that is actually helpful! (Clear and easy to follow.)

Would love to see a full history undo feature in future updates, by the way.

Pleased to see that it is compatible with .8BF Photoshop plugins. (I've collected quite a few over the years and it's nice to know I can access them with NPS6.)

Very nice program, Gary.

Thank you again for making it available here at BDJ.

Keith Norton I have looked all over your website and cannot find a list of supported DSLR cameras other than a general mention of Canon. According to an earlier post, it is possible to create tethering capability for unsupported cameras, but which ones are supported "out of the box"?

BTW, comments are now working on BDJ with IE9 because I just posted this!

Gary Weldon Thanks for the comments, Louis. We did spend some time to ensure compatibility with Windows 7, especially with the new security features. Regarding the comments for multiple undo steps, that is actually on our action item list. Even better, we plan to build in a macro recorder so that you can save your own effects presets. You'll be able to essentially apply a sequence of effects, save them as a preset, and subsequently apply them to additional photos. It's similar to "actions" in Photoshop and will be a nice time saver. We actually have other features we wanted to include and many conceptual functions, but realized we had to release it at some point. A lot of the best suggestions come from organic use and we certainly appreciate the feedback. One note on 8BF filters....not all will work, but a good majority will. For instance, some filters designed for Photoshop CSX versions may not work with NPS.

Gary Weldon Hello Keith, this thread from our beta group lists the supported Canon models:

Please note that you can use the hot import function for other camera brands. It allows you to automatically open images as well, by pointing your DSLR capture directory to specific folder within NPS.

Louis H Very, very nice program, Gary.

I'm in the process of working through which plugins I own will work and your list has been helpful.

Had some green screen images and they all were handled very quickly by NPS.

Will set up my camera tomorrow and try live capture and preview.

It picked up my integrated webcam without any problems.

I'm sold! Seriously. A great program that I can see being very useful for far more than "novelty" photos!

Definitely going into my toolbox at such a great discount and offer.

Gary Weldon Hello Bob,

There's no virus, this is a false-positive. The auto-update file gets flagged sometimes because it contacts our server over your internet connection to query for updates.

Louis H I have been working with the trial version this past week and even though I have a few areas I would like to see improved and/or added (and I will communicate these with Gary directly), I decided to go ahead and pick it up today as I continue to see real potential for this program. (And I am speaking as a novice - so take that into consideration, please. I am still only beginning to scratch the surface of what this program can do.)

Areas of concern are, as far as I am concerned, more related to my own level of skill in both actual photography and image manipulation. I would like to see a more advanced cut-out tool built into the program. Right now it works great with properly done green or blue screen images. What problems I had were more related to my images than with this program. And I want to point out that I have not yet contacted Gary for assistance in these areas. I wanted to see how a beginner such as myself could figure out how to adapt and work with the photos I have. I was able to do so, although I am sure I could probably accomplish such tasks quicker once I learn more from those with more advanced skill with this program.

It is fun. It has gotten my grand-kids howling with laughter. And it has given me a desire to improve my skills in image taking and manipulation. There is no doubt I would never have even considered this program without such a huge discount AND the upgrade to an unlimited license. SO a big thank you to Gary for being willing to agree to make such an offer and to the folks at BDJ for their efforts to bring this program to the BDJ community.

Tazzie @Louis, good luck with the program, and keep us posted on how it goes.  I plan to purchase it, also, and will be learning a lot as I learn how to use it as a retiree with graphics know how and some photography skills.  Lots of potential with this program and I'm looking forward to it!

@ Gary ... is there a forum for users of the program or any such venue?  It would be great to have a place where we could ask questions, share tips and experiences, etc.

Gary Weldon Hi Louis,

I'm glad you like it! Sure, there is a bit of a learning curve but it's considerably easier than advanced photo editors such as Photoshop and Corel. I should also point out that it is not meant to replace those programs. It's meant to make quick work of specific tasks. The premise is that when you are creating these images for customers, you want to get them in and out as quickly as possible. The tools are meant to strike a balance between speed and function. After you get a liitle time under your belt, you'll be flying in no time.

Tazzie,

Actually, I do have a forum which we used during our beta process. I do plan to open back up for general use, as I also feel that forums are a great communal tool to share information and tips.

Thanks to everyone who has participated in the promo!

Louis H Gary, you are absolutely right and I have a couple of plugins (I use both Corel and Photoshop Elements) for more extensive cut-out work.) This program is indeed FAST when one is using it for what it is intended. And it was easy enough for me to get far enough into it on a basic level to realize that any current learning curve I might have will fade away quite soon.

Thank you again for offering it here!

You can imagine I'm disappointed - and I would really appreciate some assistance.
