"... if you're hunting for an extremely thorough backup package, this is the one for you." Laptop Magazine

Think of your computer as a big battleship, cruising along the open waters. Now think of all of the hazards that lurk, unseen, just below the surface of the ocean that we call the internet. These are the minefields and torpedoes that can penetrate your hull and send your entire operation to a watery doom: viruses, corrupt files, bad driver updates, failed hard drives. The worst part? You never see it coming - one day your computer works, the next day, it won't boot. Beep, beep.

You need a plan. True Image Home 2010 provides this plan, creating a precise copy of your entire hard drive. In the event of catastrophic failure, you can restore everything to the way it was with just a click of the mouse! It's even faster with individual files - say you do something silly like overwrite an important term paper with a blank document (yes, I've been there), with True Image Home 2010 you can restore that single file and save yourself hours of rewriting! The choice is yours - backup the entire drive, specific files or folders, or everything but specific files and folders.

If you're really paranoid, you can even make a backup of your backup, and keep your backup's backup as a regular file or compressed ZIP or TIB archive file (which, by the way, is fully text searchable). With True Image Home 2010, you can create simultaneous archives to your hard drive as well as an external USB drive! Your backups can also be stored on a hidden partition, so no one can steal your archive.

Now there's no need to panic when your computer won't boot. True Image Home 2010 gives you the ability to boot from your backup, just by pressing F11. With its convenient "set and forget" functionality, you only need to set up True Image Home 2010 once, and you're continuously protected without further ado!

Version alert! Here's a taste of what's new in True Image Home 2010:

  • Online BackupT:Optional online storage services are available for automatic backup over the internet.
  • Nonstop BackupT: Automatically create incremental backups every five minutes.
  • Virtual Hard Disk Support: Convert backup images (.tib) into virtual hard disk files(.vhd) and vice versa. Full compatibility for Microsoft Windows 7 backup!
  • New, More Powerful Scheduler: The new scheduler expands the amount of scheduling options available. Use the new calendar view to build schedules and tasks. Suspend and enable tasks, specify dates to run tasks, and copy tasks to new dates.

berry taylor In a response to a question about upgrading, in the Acronis forums, "Oleg" replied "We have implemented Acronis True Image Home Upgrade Protection.

Acronis True Image Home Upgrade Protection is valid for 12 months from the purchase date, and can only be bought with Acronis True Image Home 2010 Upgrade (all available language editions).
Acronis True Image Home Upgrade Protection is valid for 12 months from the purchase date. Once a new Acronis product is released, all customer accounts on Upgrade Protection are automatically updated with a serial number for the new version.
"

I was unable to find any information about that program on the Acronis site. Would you explain what it entails and let us know whether this purchase would qualify?

Great product so far - been using the trail all day and like it very much.

cheers

J Parker Wow, if you go to the Acronis True Image Home 2010 site and click on the Upgrade button, it looks like Acronis figured out a way to get the discount back. It's called "Upgrade Protection". If you hover over the information icon and read carefully, it sounds like anyone who didn't purchase from their "Cleverbridge Online Store" has to pay extra to get updates or even bug fixes during (not after) the next 12 months. The price for "Upgrade Protection" and the amount you save on the BDJ discount just happen to be about the same.

Reminds me of those old movies where Harpo (or somebody like that) would give you a dollar with a string attached... Acronis, if my interpretation is wrong then I apologize in advance.

Roger Thomasson @ J Parker

You are mistaken :-) The optional "Upgrade Protection" applies to major upgrades (True Image 2011, 2012, etc), not minor 2010 updates or bug fixes.

Also, despite being promoted on Bits du Jour, the actual transaction does in fact occur via Acronis' official Cleverbridge Online Store.

Best!

No this will be Acronis True Image Home 2010 only, without Plus Pack. This offer will also include optional Backup CD for the full price.

All the best!

Frank Stephens Easy purchase and download, your Acronis account lets you download full version updates. I added the Plus Pack, which is full price. I'm not sure what Roman meant by "this offer will also include optional Backup CD for the full price", I didn't have any options, just electronic download.

Does this work with TrueCrypt hidden OS on regular or also hidden volumes? That would be pretty coooool, right?

J Parker Roger I hope you are correct. This is a good discount and good product.

My focus is mainly on the Acronis upgrade policies. Of course there was no way for us to be certain in advance that a purchase from BDJ qualifies as and is in fact from Acronis' official Cleverbridge Online Store. I'm glad you clarified the issue. Customers have to be wary.

The Acronis "Upgrade Protection" plan on their upgrade page is also not as clear as it could be. Additional Help for this plan says "...Acronis True Image Home Upgrade Protection provides you with unlimited upgrades, for a period of 12 months from your purchase date, to all future, major releases..."

Like many software companies these days, Acronis has a pattern of 1 major upgrade per year (regardless of whether there were any truly useful features added, but that's another discussion). So why don't they just say this plan guarantees you the next major release? What if we purchase today (12/22/2009) and TI Home 2011 comes out roughly a year from now and customers try to upgrade on 12/23/2010 or beyond? Aren't we too late and out-of-luck as far as "upgrade protection"? It would be appreciated if Acronis clarified these cleverly worded statements. Thanks.

Mike G I purchased Acronis TI Home 2009 through BDJ last year. At first I found TI to be highly unstable and ended up using alternative backup solutions. Finally, last summer a build was released that was stable enough for me to use and I ended up liking TI 2009.

The advice from Nortbert is good. Customer reviews give you an idea of bugs that early adopters encounter. There seems to be a trend in the software industry in recent years. In order to maintain reliable income streams, major versions are released annually. Given this rigid release schedule, the first few builds are commonly buggy and could be considered beta software in some cases. One and two star ratings tend to be heavily clustered around first few months after major version release.

J Parker has a point as far as upgrades. Considering some of the exorbitant upgrade pricing and schemes out there, it's often a much better deal to just wait and catch it new on BDJ! ;-)
