If you’ve ever had an old photo, blurry image, compressed graphic, or low-resolution video that you wished looked a little sharper, Upscal is worth a look. This free AI-powered image and video enhancer brings super-resolution processing directly to your device, letting you enlarge and improve your media without sending your files off to a cloud server. Choose an image or video, select the built-in AI model that fits your content, and let Upscal do the heavy lifting. It supports everything from portraits and nature photography to illustrations, anime, product images, and everyday snapshots—and it’s available for Windows, macOS, iPhone, and iPad.

What makes Upscal particularly interesting is what it doesn’t require. There’s no subscription, no account to create, and no need to upload your personal photos or videos to a remote service. Processing happens locally on your device, so your media stays under your control while you work. That makes it a practical choice for everything from restoring older family photos and preparing images for printing to cleaning up creator footage, social-media clips, product images, and digital artwork. GPU acceleration is supported where available, and the workflow is deliberately straightforward: open your media, choose a model, preview the result, and export the enhanced version.

And perhaps the biggest surprise is the price: Upscal is completely free for its core image and video enhancement capabilities. There’s no hidden license fee or subscription standing between you and the basic functionality. You get an easy-to-use local AI enhancement tool that can breathe new life into low-resolution media while avoiding the privacy concerns and recurring costs associated with many cloud-based alternatives. If you have a collection of photos or videos that could use more resolution, clarity, or detail, Upscal gives you a simple way to see what modern AI enhancement can do—right on your own device.

Ian Sample The website says the program is totally free of charge.

Stephen Barker Yes I saw that. And the text says "Upscal is completely free for its core image and video enhancement capabilities" which sounds to me like the more powerful functions require payment, so, as this is apparently reduced from $39, this offer must include all the implied, unstated, non-core paid-for functions, right?

And that is what indeed seems to happen - you get an email with a link to download the program via Microsoft Store, and a licence serial to enter, whereupon it says "License activated. Pro features are now available."

So this seems a genuine freebie of a paid product.

Also, this is nice: "You can install/register the software at any time. Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for the lifetime of the product."

So thanks Upscal and BDJ. Now to find out whether it works well.

(I only have on-chip graphics, which may explain why the download took rather less time than I would expect)

Elliot Sloane Absolutely no clue how to activate the license. Neither the Application nor windows Store asked for it. No evidence of this being a Pro version, either.

Micheal User This!
The email gave me a license code to unlock the features, but how do you input the code?

I've looked all over, but I can't find any way to register.

Can anybody help with this?

Elliot Sloane I finally found the Purchase option. I had to Maximize the app to full screen, because Purchase option is not visible when it is Minimized. Hope this helps others!

T K @Jorn User, isn't it astounding a program promised to have no hidden charges and be absolutely free in the vendors own words have a purchase button!

Bob C I have installed the Mac version and cannot find anywhere to enter the provided code. I have maximized the screen but there is no "Purchase" option. There is a circle with an "i" in the top right which brings up an About screen that does have an option to "Redeem Offer Code" but then the App wants you to give it your Apple App Store ID and password. There is also a button on the top right which says "Upgrade to Pro" but only offers paid options. If you choose one, it again wants you to give it your Apple App Store ID and Password. So it appears that this is a "free" version of a free program. Usually the code from Bitsdujour allows you to upgrade a free program to the Pro version.

David Mescheloff I have tried this again and again for several days. Every time the Microsoft Store apologizeds for its not working to download the program, adding "We're aware of the issue and working to fix it. Try again later."
I suspect that they're not working to fix it. I've tried and tried again!
