Lloyd Tennison So, why exactly do you need my address and telephone number? For something emailed to me?

Spam? Junk mail? Telemarketing calls?

Have never purchased anything digital EVER that needed all that info, and I run marketing websites. That is not standard for Fastspring, so don;t blame it on them.

MaxR Looks like every time that you want to use it on a website, you have to log into your account with them and input the url that you will be using to register it. For people that pay for the software, that would be a bad surprise. I've never had to keep going back to the vendor to register every use of any software.

Joe Mercier It is always interesting how a tiny minority of users choose to post here and moan. They moan about this, they moan about that, This is a piece of great software that is being given away for FREE. And all you can do is find something to complain about. As for spamming, let me correct you, spam is unsolicited email, but by definition you have to agree to an optin list, so it is not spam. All you have do do is unsubscribe at the first chance.

Have you ever considered how much work it takes to make a good WP plugin? Its a lot, and I'm giving it for free.

Those who think its unusual to fill out address/phone number fields have clearly no experience buying anything on the net. It is the standard form, and I cannot see anything wrong with it.

I'm not interested in your doubtless flame throwing responses, I'm quite used to time-wasters. The software for the WordPress plugin is free and its great, and so is all at http://www.dpopup.com and http://www.optinplayer.com

As for those who think its bad to "go back to the vendor" for each installation,
this is perfectly normal for any software used on another platform.

It is quite clear by your reaction that those are ment for marketing of sort.

Well if you meet a hotdog vendor around the corner, do you give him all your home address and phone info. No you do not, why? He just do not need it.

And for your information, I do know what corps do with information they gather, so its rather my experience, then lack off that raises this concern. Your comments about these concerns do not make things better, they rather just validates them.

So thank you for your hidden honesty in this issue.

I had a hard time finding the download link for the product as well. What you have to do is log in using the credentials in the email from them. Then, click on "get registration keys". Then scroll down and the download link is at the bottom of that page.

The link on the main page of the user area should say "get registration keys and product download" or something like that so people can find it.

R Master I was just going to bypass this free offer and wasn't going to post, until I saw the software developer's comments above. Now I feel compelled to post.

I was initially interested in this software, but did not want to provide a ridiculous amount of personal, private information for a digital downloaded product. I wasn't going to "moan" about it, as Joe Mercier implies in his earlier post, I was just going to pass it by, and I am sure that at least dozens of other people have made the same decision, quietly.

However, after reading the post by Joe Mercier, I feel compelled to pass this on - I have been developing commercial websites since 1996, and Joe was probably still in diapers or popping zits in high school. I spend tens of thousands of dollars on online purchases every year - and am not one of those who, as Joe Mercier puts it: has "clearly no experience buying anything on the net".

As for being a "time-waster", I am complaining, yes, but my time is worth over a hundred dollars an hour to my clients as a successful consultant, so does my opinion count?

Defend your product by all means, but don't put down those who object to the method in which you try to deliver it. This product vendor's response rant has put me off obtaining ANY of his products now, and I am disappointed that Bits du Jour does not enforce more strict privacy terms on their offerings.

Thanks but no thanks for an otherwise promising plugin.

Bob McLain WordPress.org has lots of totally free pop-up plugins that work brilliantly and that don't ask for personal information and that don't require registration with each use.

When you give away free software, you're "auditioning" your products in the hope that people who download the freebie will come back and pay for something else you're selling. It boggles the mind how software developers like this guy (and the Vole Word Reviewer guy, among others) will argue with prospective customers, belittle prospective customers, and portray themselves as the type of developer you DON'T want to do business with.

If the pre-sales attitude is like this, imagine the support.
