disenchanted I don't know if it is still true, but in the past Abbyy would allow competing product owners(omnipage, textbridge,Iris, etc)
to purchase the Abbyy Finereader UPGRADE [about 50% off the FULL price].
If this is still true, their uprgade policy is truly customer oriented.

I have been on Abbyy's UK mailing list for years, after registering V5.0 Pro
(I am still using the full version of Abbyy Finereader pro V5.0 I got in a UK computer magazine shortly after V6.0 was released) .

I can't believe abbyy.co.uk sent me 2 emails in Aug 2010, but neither mentioned the 10th anniversary with it's associated 50% discount.
[Unless abbyy.co.uk is not offering the same promo]

I contacted sales@Abbyy but am still awaiting a response as to:
- whether my V5.0 pro will register okay if I purchase the V10 pro Upgrade for $90 instead of the V10 full pkg for $200.
- and if not, whether they still allow competitive products the same ability to use the UPGRADE version, [I also have Omnipage, Textbridge, Adobe and Readiris in that case]

[I found a finereader 9 Pro licensing agreement olnine that allowed competitive products to use the cheaper Abbyy Finereader UPGRADE package; but nothing saying the same licensing applies in V10 though.

disenchanted I finally received an answer from Abbyy.

They DO allow older versions of Abbyy finereader,
and/or
competitor scanning software, to use the upgrade version
of Abbyy finereader V10

Per Abbyy rep:
[Yes, ABBYY USA still does offer the upgrade for users of FineReader 5.0 Pro. You are eligible to purchase the Upgrade of FineReader 10 Professional or Corporate Editions. Also, we do offer the upgrade price for all uses with a competitive OCR product already installed on their computers].
