What is a bedside crib?

A bedside crib, also referred as a bassinet or a co-sleeper, is a small baby cot attached to your adult bed. This allows your baby to sleep next to you in peace. This is a type of safe co-sleeping that does not increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) similar to bedsharing and can help you bond with your newborn.

These cots have an end that can be adjusted to allow you to reach your baby easily in the nighttime to comfort them and feed them. This is particularly beneficial for mothers who are recovering from a c-section. Many are also portable or foldable, so you can bring them along on trips and use them as a temporary sleep option for babies who aren't quite ready to move into a cot that is full size.

Choose a crib that has a mattress that is breathable, as well as an extra-safe cover that will keep your baby safe from staining. You may also want to buy baby-safe accessories such as an infant blanket or a teether.

If you're seeking a long-term solution, some cribs come with conversion kits that allow you to convert them into a toddler bed or cot at the time that is right. This is a great way to extend their lifespan and making the transition smoother. Some even have a removable top section that transforms into a bassinet, and some can be used as an ordinary or high-rise adult bed. This is a great option for families who plan to travel frequently or switch between bedrooms at night. Be aware of the size of your bedroom to ensure that you fit comfortably in the crib. A lot of cribs have an incline which can be used to create an incline for babies with reflux.

The Joie Roomie Glide

The idea behind the product is to allow parents to bond with their children while sleeping together, without sharing a bed this co-sleeper has features that make bonding between parents and babies safe, easy and fun.

A smooth rocking motion can be initiated by pressing the button. This can soothe baby into sleep with a gentle rhythm that doesn't disrupt their natural sleeping routine. This is great for toddlers or older babies who are having trouble settling down. It can also aid with digestive issues such as reflux and colic.

The crib can be locked in it once the rocking is done to stop it moving. It can also be secured to the side of your bed using clips and straps. This makes it extremely solid and secure, allowing you to enjoy a great night's rest without worrying about your child sliding off into the middle of the room. The rounded cocoon shape comes with softly cushioned sides and double mesh windows on both sides to allow plenty of air flow whilst making sure your baby is safe.

bedside crib and cot discovered the CoZee to be a safe and comfortable sleeping space for her infant. It was a pleasure to not move like other models, so she didn't wake up in the night trying to soothe her child during feedings. She also loved that the side was lowered so that she didn't have to reach over her partner to carry the baby out for night time feeds.

The CoZee is available in charcoal and oak and is a beautiful addition to the bedroom. It looks more like a designer piece than some of the other cribs we've tried, which appear quite utilitarian. It's also light at just 11kg. It also comes with a carry-on case so you can bring it on holiday or even when you move house. You only need to purchase a waterproof sheet and a safety strap for co-sleeping. The instructions and illustrations are easy to follow once you open the box.

The Maxi-Cosi lora

The Iora is a bassinet for infants designed to help parents feel connected with their infant while they sleep. It can be adjusted both up and down, and moved through three different slide positions, to fit under the bed of the parent or in the corner, so the baby is always at hand. The mesh siding allows air to flow through, and allows you to see your baby easily. You can also store extra pajamas and supplies in the large storage basket under.

Unlike some other smaller bedside cribs, the Iora folds flat and comes with a carry-on bag so that it can be taken anywhere. It was easy to move from room to room, and our mum testers felt it was the right size for a bedside crib. The large storage basket is ideal to store bedding and nappies.

This is a great option for parents who want to sleep in a co-sleeping bed, but don't wish to share their bed. Or if one of the partners has mobility issues like arthritis or back pain. Our mom testers love the convenience of being able to access their baby in the Iora and that it has an optional reflux incline to help alleviate gas.

Our mums also love the fact that the mattress is in line with NICE guidelines that state to put the infant in the crib or Moses basket on its own (with no toys, blankets pillows, etc.). They also state that the mattress is firm and comfortable for the baby and easy to find sheets for. It's not as light as other cribs for bedside use however, so if you want something lighter and easier to move around, look at other options on our list.
