Top Rated Robot Vacuums

A robot vacuum can keep your floors tidy enough to reduce the frequency of hoovering manually. Select a vacuum that is well-trained in navigation, can clean stairs and corners, and that has a large bin that will need to be emptying every so often.

There are models that mop and charge on their own which can be essential for those who have pets or kids. The top performers in our tests offer decent obstacle-avoiding capabilities.

1. iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO

The i3+ EVO is similar to its sibling i3 EVO. They differ only in the fact that the i3+ has self-emptying capabilities. That makes the i3+ a great choice for people who want an entirely automated, hands-free cleaning experience but don't mind taking the time to empty their robot's trash bin as it gets full.

Both robots are adept at picking up surface debris on carpets and hard floors and they're excellent in moving around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates smart maps of your home that aid the i3+ EVO to navigate and clean in a way that maximizes efficiency. However unlike the i7+ and other top-rated robots we test the i3+ does not have a feature for avoiding obstacles, so it may get stuck on things like socks or power cords and it may have trouble navigating across surface transitions like hardwood to carpet.

iRobot suggests cleaning the area in which the i3+ EVO vacuums prior to using it. This includes putting away any toys or other clutter it might come across. It's also recommended to keep the dustbin and filter clear so they do not become blocked by dirt. When the i3+ EVO's internal bin is empty or the battery is low it returns to the docking station, and it automatically takes the dirt out of the docking station’s external dustbin. Then it continues cleaning from where it began. Battery life is about an hour and a half of continuous use. It takes three hours to charge.

2. iRobot i7+ Roomba

The iRobot i7+ is a top model from iRobot’s flagship line and comes with the most recent features. It's self-charging, self-navigating, and -- the most important feature of all -- it comes with an auto-emptying dustbin, which eliminates one of the primary sources of maintenance for any robot vacuum.

The Roomba i7+ is able to remember up to 10 floor plans and their names using Imprint Smart Mapping, a system that allows it to identify rooms to clean them more efficiently. It also works with iRobot Home to schedule cleaning tasks, and you can direct your robot using the app or by voice.

The i7+ is faster and more maneuverable in our tests compared to the eufy RoboVac G30. It also removed large pet hair pieces from any surface including carpeting. The biggest benefit over the eufy, though, is its self-emptying dustbin which eliminates a major source of maintenance and reduces the cost of maintenance.

We were also impressed by the i7+'s compatibility Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant AI services. We utilized these services to instruct the robot to begin or stop cleaning sessions and also to move around the room and vacuum a particular area. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ with these services. We were able, once connected, to voice commands to the i7+, like "Hey Alexa vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options for managing the i7+'s settings and monitoring its performance.
