The Band Toto Asia Toto was expanding production facilities abroad, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an opportunity to grow for Washlet toilets and bidet seats, as opposed its "base" markets in Japan and China. The company used the same just-in time approach in its supply chain management as well as sales program. This led to a higher degree of customer satisfaction. Toto has continued to innovate with regard to toilet technology. The latest toilet from the company features an environmentally friendly, powerful tornado flush. Toto's musical mastery is a result of their previous experience. Before joining the group, members were session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their sonic signature has since become the standard for pop music from the 1980s, and has influenced many contemporary artists. The album opens up hard with songs such as Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to create great AOR tunes that slowly creep into your head. The album also has some more mellow, jazzy tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations, a song which combines folk and distorted AOR and could sound totally wrong, but works wonderfully well. After Toto IV the band's fortunes began to decline. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career and the band had to go through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the aftermath of drug-related charges. However, the group continued to perform as a trio featuring Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather. Despite the turmoil, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation, which was not as successful as IV. However, the band still had a successful chart-topping album in 1992, Kingdom of Desire. The album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was the first album to feature the new singer, Simon Phillips. Tours The band has performed to millions of people around the world, with sold-out shows in Europe, North America and Asia, as well as Australia and New Zealand. The band's repertoire is huge and their catalogue has accumulated more than one billion streams on streaming services around the world. Line-up The album's third, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet arrangement of previous albums. It was a more ferocious, consistent effort with a harder edge than Hydra. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family. In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to discover songs that had never been recorded prior to. It was released in the form of a double-album called Then & Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band without a single song titled "A". ????? ?? contained an previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne". By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams suffered from a bad case of laryngitis which hampered his singing. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck. Downes and the other original members of Asia - Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility of officially reforming the band. The group, which was missing Howe who was busy with Yes during that period, was later renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively. In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had an appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
