Driving License Category A1

Driving License Category A1 is a permit to operate two-wheeled motorized vehicles. It permits you to drive mopeds or small motorcycles with engines with a power output of no more than 11 kW.

The process to get this type of license is slightly different than other categories. Let's take a look at the steps.

Prerequisites

A driving licence category is only accessible to those who are 16 years old. This license permits the driver to operate on a motorcycle that is light, while A2 and A are reserved for larger motor vehicles. The restrictions on this type of licence are intended to ensure the safety of everyone involved. You can take them off when you prove you are able to safely drive larger vehicles.

You must have a valid medical certificate in addition to your driver's license. Depending on the condition of your medical, you may be required to take an eye test or other tests. You can upgrade your license by adding an endorsement. This usually involves passing a second knowledge test, and sometimes a skills test.

Training

To get a Driving License category A1, you will need to pass both the theoretical and practical test. You also need to attend a theory class and receive a course. The training will teach you the fundamentals of motorcycling including traffic laws and regulations. You will be able to apply this knowledge when you are driving. During the course, you will familiarise yourself with the test materials that are general to all tests and also the addition that includes the specific requirements for the license category.

Once you have completed the theory and practical tests, you can drive a vehicle that has an engine that can be powered by up to 125cc. It is possible to upgrade from Category A1 to a full category A driver's licence at the age of 20 if hold a subcategory a2 for two years. This allows you drive vehicles with a maximum authorized mass (MAM), up to 750kg. This also permits you to ride motorbikes in subcategory A or A1. You also need a category E licence for towing trailers with the maximum mass that is authorized of greater than 750kg.

Practical test
