Which Lightweight Double Pushchair Should You Buy?

It's easy to move around with the lightweight double pushchair especially if you have kids of different age groups. They are easy to fold, steer and carry up and down the steps.

This City Mini GT2 offers side-by-side seats with plenty of legroom with adjustable reclining, as well as huge UPF 50+ canopies with peekaboo windows. It also comes with a smart frame that can be expanded to accommodate a second seat, and also a compatible car seat(s).

Side-by-Side

The majority of the lightweight double pushchairs we tested were side-by-side models. They are ideal for children who can stand up without assistance, since they aren't as likely to have car seat compatibility. The Thule Urban Glide 2 Double and the Baby Trend Sit 'N Stand Double, are both excellent options. They have recline that can be adjusted for both seats, a big canopy, and padded five-point safety harnesses. They're also easy to move despite their larger footprint and are perfect for parents who are worried about fitting into doorways.

The Cybex Duet pushchair is unique because of its clever frame that can be expanded to accommodate a second child seat. This makes it smaller than other pushchairs that are side-by-side. This means it fits through standard doors and is easy to maneuver on public transport. It can also be used as a jogger, which is great news for those who want to use it in conjunction with baby carriers or a car seat. It's also available in a range of fun colors.

Another great side-by-side, lightweight double is the UPPAbaby Vista v2 Double, that offers more flexibility and customization thanks to its modular frame. It's a clever design that allows you to turn it into a single buggy or a double with the addition of 2 carrycots or car seats (it can even accommodate twins). It's an outstandingly practical choice for families that are growing and the UPPAbaby is among the lightest and stylish umbrella strollers available.

Try the egg2 that folds down to the size and weight of a compact suitcase. It can be used as a double or a single by adding two baby car seats or carrycots. Our home testers were impressed with the ease of move around even with a full load of children.

Even though they are lightweight, double pushchairs that are side-by-side aren't foolproof. If your children are at the same age and stage, they could be fighting over who sits in which seat. If they are at different heights, a tandem style may be best for them, as it lets them face each other.

Tandem

While side-by-side models may be better suited for siblings of the same age, tandem lightweight double pushchairs are a different kind of pushchair with their own appeal. They can be fitted with a larger car seat, and some even have seats that can be reversible or a carrycot in the middle. They are generally more spacious and easier to move into and out of, although their baskets are usually smaller than those of single buggies. They often have larger sized canopies with peekaboo windows, as well as one cup holder for parents and padded leg cushions for children.

The iCandy Peach is another example of a lightweight and affordable tandem. The fabric is a little less premium than some of our other top-rated tandems, but it looks and feels great and is very easy to use. Its one-handed folding is impressive. While it requires some time to master, Kirstie from our Lab called it "genius". It can't be folded with the carrycot attached but the mechanism for attaching and taking it off it is simple and fast.

Tandem strollers that are lightweight typically have tighter turning capabilities than side-byside models. However, they may be harder to drive on uneven surfaces and curbs. They are also slower to accelerate and more heavy to move. This can put stress on your back.

Another alternative is a convertible double buggy that starts out as one-person, but you add adapters to turn it into a double. It can also have the option of a second seat, a carrycot, or both in the front. Children can be seated together. Some also have the option to add buggy boards, which can aid older children keep up with a younger sibling.

The Uppababy Vista V2 can be transformed into a twin-sized pushchair by purchasing additional cocoons for PS59 each. These cocoons create an open space for infants. These can be placed in a row or joined to each other's faces and you can also use them with the infant car seat that comes with the pushchair (as long as you choose the right one). As they're made with quality materials, these types of dual-use buggies can often be used for a long time without showing any wear, meaning they have high potential for resale.

Single-to-Double

This lightweight double buggy is made for families who love to go on outdoor adventures and would like to upgrade from an individual-stroller. It can be transformed into a jogger with the kit that comes with air-filled tires as well as all-wheel suspension. It can also handle rough terrain well and, as a tandem triple, is perfect for twins or children of various age groups. It's a great choice for parents who want a sleek design that is as sleek as a single and is available in a variety of colors.

We loved the way that this iCandy model folds down with just one hand, making it extremely easy to master. It's heavier than other single-to double pushchairs, however our home tester Karolina says it's maneuverable even with two toddlers and a carrycot.

The seat can be used with the parent facing and you can purchase additional accessories for this stroller, such as the Roma Gemini carrycots (PS100 each) that are perfect for newborns. The seats are comfortable for toddlers, with high-quality headrests and lumbar supports. And there are a variety of options for reclining in the front, with the seat being able to be adjusted to different positions, and the rear seat offering the option of recline.

The biggest drawback of this type of buggy is that it's generally larger overall than the side-by-side doubles, which makes it harder to get through doorways and can be tricky to maneuver around kerbs. However the suspension and wheels on these models generally perform well in coping with paved surfaces and the fact that they're generally lighter than the side-by-sides, means you still have plenty of storage space. These strollers aren't easy to maneuver around supermarkets with narrow aisles, and they can be difficult to carry a lot. Even though it's easier to turn the stroller around on a narrow, curving path, this can be a problem. Some are also more easy to turn than others, like the Thule Urban Glide 2 Double and the Baby Trend Sit N' Stand Double, for example.

Convertible

Convertible double pushchairs are fantastic because they can be adapted to the changing needs of a family. Often, they start as single buggies, and come with adapters that allow you to include a second child's seat or carrycot, or (in certain instances) a car-seat to the frame. Some are able to be converted to a single buggie when your child's older age begins to walk or wants to ride buggyboards.

This stylish tri-fold double stroller is among of the lightest on our list. It can carry up to 40 lbs per child, and includes an extra storage basket in between the seats. Home testers appreciated its large canopy with windows that peek out multi-position reclining seats, as well as front and rear suspension for smoother rides on rough terrain. It also has an easy-to-use cup holder for parents as well as an ample, easily accessible basket. However, they pointed out that the backs of the seats have pockets that are not big enough to accommodate anything more than a phone and keys.

This top-of-the-line, lightweight side-byside can be used in more than 20 configurations and includes an additional seat and carrycot. It has a distinctive steering handlebar, rear and front suspensions that smooth rough terrain and a compact fold that can be folded up with straps for easy transport, and seven-inch front wheels with swivel locks and ten-inch back wheels with suspensions for an easier ride. The only downside is that you'll need to buy a separate baby carrier or car seat.

This multi-functional tandem is a top pick among our home testers for its maneuverability and large shopping basket that is accessible with both seats facing the parent. It is easy to maneuver due to its surprisingly low weight (about the same as a few single pushchairs). Reversible seats mean you can flip them to face either way, and the clever way it connects a second seat or riding board to the rear is praised by many. Parents also admired that it accommodates car seats and infant carriers from multiple brands. This includes a few that aren't normally compatible with other double buggies.
