How to Buy a Motorcycle Driving License A1 and A2

The process of becoming an A1 license holder is an exciting step forward for young riders on motorcycles. It gives them more training and enhanced riding privileges.

It also grants you the ability to ride without a license plate or to carry a passenger and also to drive on motorways. You must pass the theory test, pass the training and take the modules 1 and 2. Getting an A licence is priced at around PS650 including CBT the theory test, as well as training.

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)

The CBT is a pre-requisite for obtaining a motorcycle license. The CBT includes instruction in the classroom on road safety and highway codes, as well as practical riding on roads for a minimum of 2 hours with a professional trainer. This option is only available to individuals who are over the age of 24. It allows you to upgrade your A2 license without the need to take a CBT test or theory test. You'll still have to pass the modules 1 and 2 of the theory test.

Both modules 1 and 2 of the theory test are computer-based, and contain multiple-choice questions about topics such as airworthiness and road signs. You must get at least 42 points out of 50 in order to pass the test. The module 2 practical exam is, in contrast is where you ride on a bicycle along the road in order to complete a series tasks. This includes demonstrating proper lane positioning, turning at intersections, making the safe U-turn, and paying attention to traffic signs.

The cost for completing the practical and theory tests will differ based the location you're in and the kind of motorcycle you'll end up riding, but expect to pay between PS400 and PS900+ for full training with module 1 and 2. Motorcycle Theory Test (MTT)

You need to pass the motorcycle theory test (known as Module 1 and Module 2) before you can take the practical test. This is the best choice for those who want to upgrade your license before. It offers more freedom and you can buy an extra-large bike as soon as you are ready.

If you're over the age of 24, you may also be able to pass the MTT to get a direct A licence. This permits you to ride a motorbike of any size, and you can transport passengers. This is not the ideal option for beginners as they'll need to pass the CBT and theory test over again. However, it could be the only option for you in case you want to upgrade to a bigger bike.

Practical Test

You will be accompanied for the test by a motorcycle instructor. During this time you will be performing several exercises while the instructor helps you get comfortable with the bike. The A2 licence allows you to drive motorcycles that have a the maximum power of 35 kW and a weight/power ratio of not more than 0.2 kg/kW. This licence is also applicable to three-wheel motor vehicles, like trikes.

You must pass both a written test on road traffic as well as a practical test to be eligible for an A2 license. The test will consist of 20 questions, including 10 questions on road safety. You must answer each one correctly to pass the test. You must be at least 17 years old or older to take the test.

A2 licenses require a medical test and a passport photo. If you already have an A1 license you can apply for A2 straight away. However, this route is more lengthy and requires more experience.

After passing both the Module 1 and 2 practical tests, you can upgrade to a full-A licence. It allows you to ride on motorcycles that are up to 35kW (47Bhp). It also allows you to remove your L plates, carry passengers, and ride on motorways.


The procedure for getting an A2 licence is similar to that for an A license. Once you have a CBT and pass the theory test you can begin training for the A2 practical test with your chosen course provider. The modules for the A2 test differ slightly. Module 1 is a test of your riding ability. The examiner will assess how you ride the bike, and which roads you can ride it. Module 2 is divided into smaller sections. It begins with a visual check, followed by around 30-minutes of assessing your driving on the road, focusing on how you handle the bike under stress and how you deal with carrying a passenger (known as a Pillion).

You can choose to take a direct or progressive route to get an A2 licence. If you're over 24 and want to skip the AM and A1 licence levels, the direct route is a great alternative. This means you'll avoid the two-year wait between passing the A2 tests and advancing to an unrestricted A licence.

It is possible to go straight from a CBT to an A2 license in the event that you're willing to spend more money and take the direct route. You'll need a lot of cash to pay for the testing and training costs.

The DAS scheme also allows you to get an A2 license. This is only for those over 24 who are able to receive professional training and take the entire motorcycle test. This will allow you use any type of bike without removing your L plates and carry pillion riders. The DAS course and the test are considerably more expensive than other routes for an A license. However, if you're a slightly older and have a few savings built up The DAS route is a good option.
