Mid Bunk Bed

Mid bunk beds are a favorite with kids from preteens to teens. They feature an elevated sleeping space as well as an under-bed storage space for or desks. They are also more versatile than loft beds, since they can be converted into two separate singles.

Some are designed to look mature with a small ladder and petite steps leading up to the top bed. They're also extremely sturdy.

Safety

Bunk beds can be a risk, especially for children. Every year, thousands of children are treated in hospitals for injuries resulting from bunk beds and loft beds. Most of these injuries are not serious. The majority of bunk bed accidents happen when children play on or around the beds. A significant portion of these involve falling off the top bunk. There are numerous ways to minimize this risk and ensure your children are safe in the evening.

You should first choose a bunkbed that meets safety standards. Guardrails should extend at a minimum of 3.5" on both sides of the bed and should be installed to stop children from falling. The upper guardrails should be at least five inches above the mattress to protect against falls. Similarly, the ladder should be secured and securely connected to the bunk bed frame. Ladder steps should also be made of durable materials and have wide, well-secured treads to prevent slips. Also, you should educate your children about proper use of bunk beds beginning from the very first day. This includes not playing in or around the bunk beds, and sleeping only in them, and keeping your belongings and body within the safety rails.

Other steps that can significantly reduce the risk of bunk bed accidents is to ensure that the ladder isn't being used as a climbing frame, and no belts or ropes are attached to the beds; they could be strangulation hazards. To minimize the chance of bumping against ceiling lights or fans when climbing the ladder, put the ladder away from them. Additionally, you should regularly inspect the bunk bed for signs of wear and tear, in particular any squeaks that could signal a malfunction or damaged component that may compromise the stability or safety of the bed.

Beware of DIY bunk bed kits because they may not be compliant with the most current safety standards. When purchasing a bunk bed, you must review the instructions of the manufacturer and inquire about any safety features that might be available.

Space

A mid bunk bed is lower than a loft or a high sleeper, meaning that the space underneath could be used as storage space or even a bed. This can be ideal for smaller rooms or children who need extra sleeping or study space.

There is usually room for a desk or bookcase, into the bed's side. This is ideal for storage and homework. Some models will have a low-height wardrobe that's ideal for younger kids' clothes, while others have cubbies to store books, toys as well as bits and pieces.

The best mid bunk beds will also feature an escalator that leads to the sleeping loft eliminating the need for ladders, making it easy for children to climb into and out of bed. Some mid bunk beds have windows that peek out, adding an element of playfulness to the room.

Some models also come with an ottoman or a sofa that can be pulled out which creates a cozy lounge space that's ideal for family movie nights or hanging out with friends. Some models will also have a workstation that flips down, which is ideal for children who must focus on schoolwork and homework.
