Double-glazed windows are a common feature. Over time, they can be worn out or rusty.

To replace a UPVC window handle, you have to know the length of the spindle of your existing handle and also its fixings. This can be done by examining the base of the previous handle.

Handle

Over time, uPVC window handles and locks may be damaged by wear and tear, or accidental or intentional damage. This can mean that the lock or handle becomes difficult to open or close, or that it isn't locked in any way. It may be tempting to replace the entire window unit when this occurs, but it's not always required. In many cases an upgrade to the handle or lock is enough.

The most commonly used type of uPVC window handle is the espagnolette style. The handle comes with an external spindle that is protruding from the handle. It fits into a gearbox that operates the multipoint locking mechanism inside the window. It is crucial to match the correct handle and lock to your windows to ensure that they work properly, which is why we carry a broad selection of replacement handles for all types of uPVC windows.

It's a good idea, when replacing a uPVC handle, to use screw covers to protect the screws from corrosion and to keep them secure. Alternately, you can use a washer or spacer to ensure a better seal. A screw cap in place will also prevent debris and water from entering the handle and causing damage.

After the handle has been removed from the window, it's an ideal idea to scrub the spindle of the new handle, as well as the threaded part of the bolt. This will ensure that the handle is fitted and functions properly. It will also keep dirt out of the multipoint lock.

The next step is to install the new uPVC handle. It is essential to follow the instructions provided with the new handle and to take a look at your old one prior to starting to get an idea of how to do it correctly. The process is usually simple. If you have any issues not addressed in this guide, we recommend contact our team for more information.

It is also important to note that if replacing a uPVC handle with a cockspur (also called an Espag handle) you'll need to examine the step height of the window in order to find the right size of handle. The step height is the distance between the base of the window and the place where the handles of the cockspur are.

Hinges

If your windows are starting to close and open with a visible gap, it could be due to the hinges not being aligned with the frame. This is usually an easy fix that can be solved by installing a new set of replacement hinges for windows. We have a variety of different options and even customize the dimensions of the hinges to meet your requirements.

We can provide a variety of hinges for Upvc and timber windows. They are available in a range of colours to match your existing window frames and come with all fixings for fitting. We can provide repair screw packs for double-glazed windows that have older hinges. This allows you to cut the old thread back into the frame.

We offer a wide variety of hinge styles. These include traditional casement hinges, that can be used in conjunction with a tilt and turn handle, or a regular handle and the fire escape egress sash hinges, which are designed for larger side hung windows. These hinges are designed to fully open in a crisis and include an easy-clean position. We also stock restricted-egress hinges that are designed to restrict the opening angle of windows to a maximum of 100mm. This is ideal for households with children.

Squeaky hinges can be a sign that the hinges are worn out, this is often due to the rubbing of metal against metal. A small drop of lubricant can help, however if the noise persists it is likely that the hinges will need to be replaced.

The windows that are plumb help to avoid the need for binding, this means that the operating sash of the window is line with the frame, ensuring that it can be closed and opened correctly. A window that's not plumb could have issues opening and closing, or may become stretched over time, which can cause problems with the seal and appearance of the window.

You can buy replacement upvc windows hinges in imperial and metric sizes. In general the size in metric is a bit more precise, however this isn't really evident once they are installed. The first corner holes on the track are standard but the others may vary depending on the hardware used originally. You should measure the holes in your frame prior to purchasing it to ensure that the upvc hinges you purchase are the right size.

Crank

Over time, wear and tear can cause damage to your window handle the lock, crank mechanism or even the handle. This could make it difficult to open and close your windows. It can also impact their security. If you notice that your window is hard to open or close, or you hear a clicking noise when turning the handle, it may be an indication that you have to replace the crank mechanism. If you're unable to lock your window or the multipoint locks are broken, it could be worth replacing this part also.

A new window crank is able to be replaced with minimal effort, but you need to ensure that you purchase the correct size replacement. You can tell whether the new one has the exact same step height as the previous one by measuring the distance from the crank arm guide bushing to the notch on the track at the bottom of the frame. Alternately, you can take a measurement of the length of the spindle that is on your existing handle to determine what size you require to get a replacement.

The type of handle on your window will determine the kind of crank mechanism that is required for your casement and windows with awnings. Espag handles are equipped with a mental spindle on their back, which is connected to the frame of the window and controls the window mechanism, while cockspur handles feature pegs which are fixed to the frame by three or four screws that are inserted into the sash and frame.

It's easy to replace your window operator once you've identified the correct replacement. Remove any screws for mounting trims from the casement cover, and gently lift the cover off to expose the insides of the window operator (Photo 1). Compare the new operating lever with the old one, and then remove any rusted trim screw. Attach the new lever to the window frame. Replace any screws that have become rusted or bent. Then, put the casement cover on top of the mechanism.
