World of Warcraft Item Upgrades Upgrades to items can be used to improve the stats of a particular item. Depending on the upgrade type, it may increase an item's Mark Level or Rarity, and also boost other stats. Each item has a track to upgrade it. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a specified amount. Item Level The value of an item's basic stats increase when it is upgraded. This is the sum of an item's leveled-up perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades to items can be costly, depending on the upgrader you choose and the kind of upgrade you decide to perform. This is due to the fact that many perks need to be replaced to allow the item to be upgraded. Item level is a commonly used measurement of power and is visible on all item tooltips. It can also be used to limit how much PvP gear players can wear, since PvP is limited at lower levels. Players can view their average level of item on their character sheet. When deciding whether to purchase or sell equipment players can evaluate the item level. It's an indicator of the item's damage and quality. The level of the item can be used to compare items when looking at the inventory of a seller. The level of the item can be checked by pressing the ALT key on your PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will display the full item description, including its value. It can also be found by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor, and then entering /itemlevel into chat. There are various theories on how the item level calculation is done. One theory is that the level is a number derived from a formula which calculates the amount an item's stats are worth. It considers the fact that different perks have different worth and that gems in sockets add to the overall value of the item. This can result in an item's ilvl calculated, which is typically very close to Blizzard's actual item level. However, this isn't the only factor which affects an item's ilvl, as the level of the area the item was dropped in could alter the value of its stats, for instance by adding an amount to its haste or crit rating. This means that items that drop at higher levels will have more value than items dropped in lower-level instances. Item Stats The stats of an item can be the difference between a good or bad item for players. The game uses them in many ways to encourage players to not limit themselves to one weapon, and to encourage them to try out other weapons. The stat mods on an weapon increase the base stats. These stat mods are then increased by a player's level. Upgrades to the item add by boosting certain stats on the item. The upgrade costs are determined by the rarity of the item. A white or grey item for instance, will only be upgraded once, while an item with rare tiers may be upgraded several times at more expensive costs. Another method of altering the stats of an item is by affixing it. They are stat boosters that can be added by the player to an item. Affixes can provide the item additional damage, add a special ability to the item (such as reviving dead or decreasing cooldowns), or make the item unique by adding a special name to the item. At present, all affixes can be changed by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button with the arrows that circle. It will cost a set amount of gold and other items. These can be used as upgrade gauges, just like the other rerolling methods. In addition to Rerolling affixes and rerolls, players can select which stats to keep on an item when it is upgraded. The stat ranges are determined by the item's level. However, all items will have at least one stat in the range, unless they are an item that is unique, or the item is a God Roll from a raid boss. This is another aspect that could be changed by adding the option to upgrade the equipment without having to reroll the affixes or choosing which stats to enhance. As with base equipment, it will have to be done per item, and the item comparison interface would not display all the possible stats at once. Item Luck The Luck stat of a player boosts the chance of finding items as well as the properties generated by loot, and the strength of these properties. However, it does not directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives the player the chance to upgrade their equipment earlier in the game. This is especially advantageous in the early game, because players tend to put defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains. Luck can also increase the likelihood of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance that increases with each item level and can be further increased by using an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing. The shields, armor, and weapons have an initial Luck value of 40. These items can then be enhanced with golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the item's material type) to grant an additional +40 Luck or to increase the Luck of the item up to 140. Certain items, like the weapon that is infused with hollow, can also be equipped to increase the damage dealt by any skill that deals damage by 5percent. These items are available in the shop, or they can be crafted using the right ingredients. Item Failure Not all upgrades work. Cash shop items can be used to boost the chance of success of an upgrade or to stop players from losing their item in the event that it fails. The rate of success of an upgrade is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage indicates the probability of successful upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special Materials. The percentage of success can only be increased as much, and the chance that the upgrade will fail cannot exceed 100%.. The performance of an upgrade is also affected by the luck of the item. All items have an overall success rate of 25%, and each item with Luck increases the chance of success by five percent. Note that item upgrades are rendered above the inventory items therefore enchantment glints and other effects may be obscured by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
