Bedside Crib and Travel Cot

Bedside cribs look like an infant bassinet, and are attached to the side of a bed. They often have a single side that can be dropped down to make it easier to reach and some even have an incline setting that's perfect for babies with reflux.

MFM test subject Georgina said that this crib was simple to put together, and the instructions were very clear. It was a simple construction. It folds down to an extremely compact size and comes with a handy travel bag.

Easy to put together

They are compact and easy to set up, meaning they can be placed near your bed. They are also lighter, which makes them more portable. Georgina, one of our MFM home test participants, praised the Maxi-Cosi Lora crib for being "super straightforward to build with clear instructions and simple zips." This crib can be used as a portable crib, and it comes with a handy bag. It has multiple mesh openings for ventilation, and its adjustable height allows it to fit on any mattress.

Some cribs with a bedside have an additional side panel that can be raised, allowing an easy access to your baby without having to step out of your own bed. This is a great option for breastfeeding mothers, or those who want to be with their baby all night long but do not want to risk co-sleeping (which is associated to a higher risk of SIDS).

Plus, there's an integrated reflux setting and a 360 swivel to allow you to rotate the crib to suit the baby's position.


If you're looking for something a smaller the Tutti Bambini CoZee is another stylish choice with oak legs and smart fabrics to match your decor. It's also incredibly easy to put together. Georgina who took part in the MFM test was capable of putting it together quickly, without requiring any instructions. It's also a good travel cot, which folds flat before slipping into a bag for easy storage.

The Next2me Magic, which was shortlisted for the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards, is also somewhat larger, but is still relatively compact and easy to attach into your bed. Georgina also found it easy to set up, though she felt the instructions could have been clearer regarding the zips.

Easy to clean

When you're looking at bedside cribs and travel cots, look for ones that come with a mattress cover that can be machine-washed. This will keep it clean and free of dribbles, spills, and leaky diapers. It's important to select a model that can be disassembled and dismantled in parts, so you can get into all the corners and crevices to conduct an extensive cleaning and sanitising.

This is important, as it's the best way to be sure that all dirt and germs have been cleared away. It is also important to ensure that the sides of your crib are securely connected, ensuring there aren't any gaps or spaces in which your child could slip down or become trapped.

You'll also need to make sure that the crib is easy to clean and that it is a good fit for your bed. This is particularly important if you are using a bedside crib to facilitate co-sleeping. These cribs are designed to be tethered securely to the parent's side, giving parents to easily access to their infant throughout the night to feed and soothe their baby while still ensuring the security that separate sleeping surfaces offer.

Mattresses that are used are more likely to losing their shape with time which increases the risk of SIDS. All new cribs must meet BS EN1130:2019. This is the most recent standard, which introduces stricter requirements to ensure the safety of your sleep and provide effective solutions.

Multi-faceted

The bedside crib, or co-sleeping mattress as it's often referred to, attaches to the bed to allow you to reach your baby easily at night without leaving your sleeping space. They can also be used as standalone cribs during the daytime. They usually feature a side panel which can be moved down so you can feel and see your baby. Some cribs allow you to keep the panel closed throughout the night, giving you the comfort and intimacy of sleeping in a bed with your newborn however it reduces the risk of bed sharing. Some cribs can also be converted into a travel cot, or include additional features such as tilting, rocking (use with caution, be sure to speak to your GP regarding this) or even turning into an older baby cot or playpen.
