CAMHS ADHD Assessment

If your child or young person is struggling, they could be referred to CAMHS for an ADHD assessment. They will usually be asked to bring with them their parent(s)/guardian(s) and a teacher who knows them well.

In response to COVID-19, parents' and caregivers' responses to the interview highlighted positives around remote appointments, but also that face-to-face appointments are preferred during assessments.

Symptoms

If you have ADHD, your child or teenager may struggle to remain focused and forgetting things, having trouble falling asleep, and is easily distracted by external stimuli. They might also have difficulty trying to keep up with their tasks or activities at home or in school, have trouble understanding information and may find it difficult to follow instructions. They might lose items or have difficulty completing assignments or homework and miss appointments. They could hurt themselves or others if they are not vigilant. They may have a difficult time in relationships, struggle to find jobs or work, and may find it difficult to connect with their family members.

A few children and adolescents with ADHD are impulsive. They may play with their hands, tap their fingers or struggle to wait their turn. They might not listen to what others say and might be more likely to be risky, such as taking drugs or having dangerous sexual interactions. Certain people with ADHD have emotional problems and are prone to becoming angry or angry. They might also be excessively sensitive or feel like others are criticizing them.

The QI team would like to thank the City and the Hackney CAMHS ADHD team for their commitment and hard work during this project.

The project involved twelve participants who were recently referred to the CAMHS ADHD path within the local Trust. The interviews were semi-structured and were conducted over the phone. Support

A diagnosis of ADHD can be stressful for parents and children, as the symptoms are often misinterpreted and viewed as bad behavior. The City and Hackney ADHD Team recently launched a program to improve quality and reduce waiting times. The team met with service users throughout the assessment process and identified key themes that informed improvements to the process. For instance, service users were of the opinion that the assessment was too lengthy and they felt that there was not enough support after the assessment. Additionally they would like see more targeted support for families and children who receive a diagnosis of ADHD.

After the QI project was implemented and implemented, the wait intervals between referral and ADHD evaluation were drastically reduced. This is in line with the trust-level goals and reflects the focus on enhancing efficiency and capacity across the CAMHS system. The team used a model for change and Plan-Do-Study -Act cycles to effect positive changes within the ADHD process.

A diagnosis of ADHD could also assist you to get an Education, Health and Care Plan for your child. The EHCP will allow your school to put in place additional support for your child, such as medication or training courses.
