Best Rated Robot Vacuum Cleaner

While robot vacuums are fantastic in keeping your floors clean however, they're not able to replace a full-size vacuum. Even the most advanced robots have trouble getting deep into rugs and carpets, and they may get caught up in cords and socks.

Being on top of routine maintenance (replacing filters cutting hair tangled from brushes and emptying the dust bin) can help your robot last longer.

Battery Life

The majority of robot vacuums can manage just a few cleaning sessions before needing a charge. The runner-up in our overall selections is the Ecovacs Deebot Q30S Combo, has a battery capable of lasting up to 180 minutes (3,230 square feet) of cleaning time on one charge. The runtime is enough to clean most smaller homes with carpets that are hard and low-pile carpets or a larger house where the rooms are roughly the same size.

A longer battery life means that the robot will be able to spend less time charging and can spend more time cleaning. It's worth opting for a model with a self-emptying dust bin because they are more efficient when it comes to cleaning up debris and returning to the dock for recharging. It is important to clean or replace the filters and wipe down the sensors and the camera regularly so they can be seen clearly.

Smart mapping technology is a beneficial feature, since you can program your robot to ensure it only cleans certain rooms or areas it's likely to crash into furniture or other obstacles. It's also useful for ensuring that your robot can get under and around sofas, beds and other furniture that is tall. Some cheap robovacs come with boundary strips that you can use to block off specific areas. Other models of higher quality rely on cameras and sensors.

Even the most powerful robot vacuums aren't able to replace a traditional vacuum for heavy-duty large-pile dirt and debris. It is recommended to keep a power vacuum available for these chores and plan robot vacs to do light cleaning throughout the week.

Navigation

A robot should be able of traveling around your home and not getting caught or running into objects like metal screws, pet hair or sand. In our tests, we use a tracking device to follow the robot as it goes through a multiroom lab and maps out its surroundings. We also test how the robot is able to avoid obstacles like power cords, furniture leg and pet waste.

The top robots can map out multiple floors and can recognize landmarks like doors and Windows. The most advanced ones such as the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra, come with a dual-sensor navigation device which uses an LIDAR sensor to map the room and a structured light camera on the front of the bot to detect objects in real-time. The S8 can avoid obstacles such as cables for power and legs of furniture. It also has the capability to store up to four floor maps.


Cheaper models don't come with this kind of detection and rely on bump sensors, which aren't as accurate. In my tests, they plowed right through cords, dog poop and even shoes that were placed in the middle of the room. The most affordable choice Dreametech D10+, is one exception to this. It is a great carpet, hard floor, tangle, and hair pickup. It also has an auto empty score that is close to perfect.

auto vacuum is a large dust bin that doesn't need to be manually empty, and for the models that mop, a water tank that can last for weeks of cleaning sessions. The Karcher RCV 5 has this and a big enough footprint to go under furniture but not so big that it won't fit in the nook between your toilet and bathtub.

Apps

Robot vacuums are like their upright counterparts and require lots of technology to keep them up to date. There are plenty of choices available in a market that is a mature. However, even the most advanced models require some interaction with their users - particularly when it comes to scheduling cleanings as well as establishing a home floor plan, and setting up virtual barriers.

Think about a model that has its own app that can determine the layout of your house and save these settings for future use. This will let the vacuum begin where it left off in subsequent runs, without having to start the mapping process each time.

It is also recommended to look for models that provide spot or zone cleaning. You can instruct the robot vacuum cleaner to concentrate on an area, like under the table after a huge family meal. You can choose to do this using the app or voice commands.

A lot of models also offer object avoidance. It allows the robot, when it comes across something in its way such as a box of shoe or a crate with dog toys, to coach itself around. This will keep it from running into things that could damage its sensors or cause jams.

Some of the most expensive models we've tested include this feature. However, they typically rely on bump sensors for this, and they weren't always able to avoid things in my test homes.

Pet Hair

Find a vacuum cleaner that is specifically designed to collect hair from pets. The best models will have the highest suction, a brush which stops tangling, and an automatic emptying mechanism. Some are also able to detect dirt levels and adjust the cleaning intensity in line with the level of dirt. They are also able to detect items that aren't a part of your home flooring, like furniture, toys, and food bowls.

Some robot vacuums include additional features that are pet-friendly. They include the water dispenser that can be used to clean floors, and a HEPA filtering system that eliminates allergens like pet dander. They could also provide a quieter operation that can reduce the amount of sound generated during cleaning sessions.

Robot vacuums that include the ability to map are a great option for pet owners, since they are designed to analyze your home and develop plans of attack based on the layout and obstructions in each room. Apps allow you to set up no-go zones. These are areas that the robot should not be permitted, such as areas that contain delicate objects or pet feeding areas. This feature is particularly useful for families with busy schedules, since it allows you to schedule cleaning sessions without having to be present in the room where the vacuum is. Another feature that is extremely useful is spot cleaning that gives you the option to use the vacuum to clean a specific area that is dirty or brimming with pet hair.

Dust Bin

If you don't want something small, consider a robot with a large bin, or even a self-emptying dustbin. This is why we suggest opting for a model that has an enormous bin or a self-emptying dustbin. The first will let you keep up with emptying your bin often enough to maintain its performance. The second will save you time and effort by automatically dumping the contents into an inside container every few cleanings.

No matter the size of your home the majority of robots are able to get up to and around furniture, and most can recognize and navigate around household obstacles such as shoes, loose cords and dog urine. Find models with smart mapping capabilities, which enable them to "learn" the layout of your home and plan more efficient routes, as well as ones that can sense and avoid objects that could hinder their path (like shoelaces or strangling charging cables).

Some models provide spot cleaning. This lets you manually target an area of your home for intensive cleaning. We've discovered that many of the top performers in our tests can take in fine particles such as sand and baking soda, together with larger debris like oatmeal, orzo pasta, metal screws and pet hair.

Depending on the brand, most robots will last for years and will continue to perform well so long as you are on top of maintenance, such as cleaning hair that has become tangled from brushes and dust bins, emptying them after each use and wiping down cameras and sensors as needed. The top robots are more modular. This allows you to replace or repair parts like batteries and wheels, as they wear out.
