What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

In contrast to older keys, modern car keys have chips in them that are unique to each vehicle. This stops thieves from taking the key and putting it in the car.

The keys are usually bought from a dealer or copied by a locksmith. The process for programing the key is different for each manufacturer and involves turning the key to the off position, without triggering the engine, and then taking it off it within a predetermined time period.

Transponder Codes

Like its name suggests, transponders send out an encoded signal that contains an eight-digit number code whenever it is questioned by air traffic control. This signal, referred to as a SQUAWK Code is used to identify aircraft on radar screens. It can also be used to transmit an exact message to the air traffic control system in the event of an emergency or to inform controllers of changes in weather conditions. Squawk codes are frequently used to communicate with ATC in situations where the pilot is unable to talk on the radio and are essential to ensure safe flying.


Every aircraft has a transponder that responds to radar interrogation with an identifier code. This enables ATC to locate an aircraft that is surrounded by screens. Transponders can be set to respond in different ways when questioned. Mode A only transmits the code, whereas mode C also contains altitude information. Mode S transponders offer more details, such as call signs and location that can be helpful in airspace that is congested.

A common sight is a small brown box that is located under the pilot's seat in most aircraft. The transponder is a small beige box used to transmit the SQUAWK code when air traffic control activates the aircraft. The transponder can be set in the ON position, ALT position or SBY (standby) position.

Air traffic control can often tell a pilot to "squawk the ident". This is an instruction for the pilot to press their transponder's IDENT button. The button causes the aircraft to blink on the ATC's radar screens, allowing them to easily distinguish your aircraft on the screen.

There are 63 discrete codes that can be assigned to aircraft, however there are certain reserved codes that restrict the use of a particular code in an area that is prone to traffic or emergencies. The discrete code blocks are configured by statistical analysis to reduce the chances that two aircraft with identical SQUAWK codes will be in the same sector at any given time.

When this happens, the car's immobilizer will be disabled and will not start until a new key is used. A PIN code is a sequence of numbers (usually 4 or 6 digits) that are used to gain access to a device or service. Although a longer PIN may appear to be more secure than a smaller one, it is possible to hack or guess a four-digit PIN. PIN codes are often required by some OEMs for aftermarket key programmers as a security measure to stop them from being used by people who are not authorized to collect data from the modules.

VIN Numbers

VIN numbers are used to identify vehicles and provide a wealth of information about them. VIN numbers are unique for every vehicle on the planet with the exception of alien cars (or whatever). The 17 digits that make up the VIN code contain the combination of numbers and letters that can be decoded in order to reveal important details about your car or truck.

Modern cars contain a huge amount of information regarding their history and specifications and functions as digital libraries that are mobile. The key to unlocking this information is the VIN number. This allows you to discover everything from if your car was involved in a recall, to how many owners it has had.

A VIN number consists of different sections, each containing specific information. The first digit indicates for instance, what kind of car it is, for instance an automobile for passengers, a pickup truck, or SUV. The second number is the manufacturer. The third digit indicates the car's assembly division. The fourth through eighth numbers indicate the model type, restraint system type and body type, as well as the engine and transmission codes. You can also set the data transfer process to automatically restart loading processes that fail for the specified number of times. This error storage can be beneficial if you need to keep track of a specific application and prevent losing data records if they are not successfully reloaded.
