Choosing the Best Crib Newborn

The Westport Cot Bed will look beautiful in the Scandi nursery. It also offers a great deal of flexibility, with three different mattress support heights and the capability to convert into the bed of a toddler.

Bassinets are a good option if you have a small home. Cribs can take up more space. Many parents prefer a crib for safety reasons.

Safety

The health and wellbeing of your baby is dependent on the crib you choose. You should ensure that it conforms to current safety standards and is free from hazards that may harm your baby as they sleep. It should be constructed well and sturdy, without loose pieces that may catch on clothing or create a choking risk. It is also crucial to follow the manufacturer's guidelines for assembly and use and regularly inspect the crib for indications of wear or damage.

The first thing you need to check is the space between the slats. It shouldn't be more than 2 and 3/4 inches to avoid your baby falling over or getting their limbs caught between them. You should be able to see and reach your child's crib. If you aren't, the slats are too close together and need to be a bit wider.

Another aspect of the crib to be considered is the mattress support system. It should be adjustable to different heights so that you can lower the mattress as your baby grows. This will reduce the risk that your child will climb out of the crib when they begin to crawl.

A fitted sheet that is able to fit the bed securely and a sturdy and stable construction are other security features to look for. Choose infant cot bed with fixed sides rather than one with drop sides. Drop sides can be dangerous for your child. It is also recommended to share a room as your baby for the first six months or so, and then move them into their own bedroom once they are old enough to be monitored when they are sleeping on their own.

Last but not least, ensure that the crib is placed away from radiators and windows and that dangling items like blind cords or curtains are not in reach. You should also remove any items that could pose a choking risk such as pillows or blankets. Be wary of purchasing cribs that are secondhand, as they may not meet the current safety standards or been recalled due to other reasons.

Design

It is crucial to remember that cribs may appear the same but must still adhere to strict safety standards. Most of the cribs that we examined are constructed in a similar fashion to ensure the structural stability. For example, most have circular bars that do not have any gaps or rough areas that could catch or pinch the baby. We also evaluated each crib and rated it based on its user-friendliness and assembly. We recommend choosing the crib with less parts to avoid confusion.

The Evolur Sprout crib is among our favorites. It has a stylish contemporary design and is available in a variety of colors, including two-toned options. It also comes with a universal mattress fitting and is Greenguard Gold Certified for having low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Another alternative is the Stork Craft Equinox 3-in-1. This crib is sleek and modern, with minimal details that make it perfect for modern nursery. The crib is available in a variety of colors and four different mattress heights so that your baby can use it as a toddler or newborn. We tested this crib and found it to be extremely sturdy and stable, without flexing or creaking when a heavy toddler climbed inside.

Convertible cribs are a great option if you're planning to have more children. A lot of these cribs can be converted into a toddler bed, and later a full-size bed offering excellent longevity for the money. The Graco Sweet2Sleep Crib is a prime example of a convertible crib which received praise from our test parents. The side rails that slide down were highly praised by parents for making nighttime feedings safer and easier. They also stated that the crib offered enough room for the baby to rest comfortably while dad and mom were asleep.

The Carter's Colby 4-in-1 crib by DaVinci is an excellent choice if you like a more traditional style. This crib is cheaper than the Stork Craft and has a timeless style that can be incorporated into the majority of nursery decors. It comes with three mattress heights, however it might be a little too small for children and parents with small bodies.

Mattress

Babies are messy and a washable crib mattress is an essential. Baby spills and other accidents can leave mattresses damp and dirty, leading to mildew and bacterial infections that could affect infants. Select a mattress that can be easily cleaned with a mild cleaner or a cloth. Also, choose a waterproof cover to prevent liquids from getting into the mattress.

Find a mattress that is rated to last up to 10 years, meaning it's ready for toddlers and beyond. Many of the mattresses featured in this review are reversible with toddler and infant sides which allows you to use them from birth until your child is ready for an adult-sized bed.

A mattress that is firm is best for infants, since it will provide the most support to their developing spines. A super-firm sleeping surface will also lower the chance of SIDS. This is due to the fact that an extremely soft mattress increases the possibility that a child's head will sink into it.

Examine the label on the mattress to make sure it complies with Consumer Product Safety Commission standards. The CPSC requires that mattresses be tested for the possibility of flammability, waterproofing lead, and other chemicals that might pose risk to infants. There are also certifications such as Greenguard, CertiPUR and GOTS which show that the mattress was tested for volatile organic compounds that may harm infants' respiratory and nervous systems.

Another consideration is the weight of a mattress for a crib. Sheet changes at night require that you move and lift the mattress. If you are unable to lift heavy objects or aren't able to handle a heavy product you should consider a mattress that is lighter for your crib. For example the Newton Wovenaire is incredibly light at just 8 pounds while the Naturepedic Organic Breathable Crib Mattress - Dual Firmness is 20 pounds, making it the largest in this review. It is also made from foam instead of woven core inners. This makes it more comfortable to move around in comparison to a traditional coil bed.

Assembly

A crib that's easy to put together is ideal for parents who are new. You should look for a crib with firmly-secured hardware, and no sharp edges or rough patches that could irritate the skin of your baby. Avoid cribs with drop-sides and headboard/footboard cuts -- these items aren't in compliance with the current safety standards.

When looking for a crib, keep in mind that you'll require a toddler bed conversion kit (if you decide to purchase a convertible crib). These kits are sold separately by the majority of manufacturers. They're usually inexpensive, and they'll assist your child in transitioning to larger beds more easily.

Many new parents appreciate the long-lasting quality that comes with the convertible crib and are a great choice for families with several children. They've been built to last and can be transformed into toddler beds, daybeds, or full-size beds.

The DaVinci Jayden 4-in-1 Crib a solid wood crib that's GREENGUARD Gold Certified and comes with four mattress-level heights. It's a classic design and is available in slate or white grey to match almost any nursery decor. The crib comes with locking wheels so you can easily move it from room to room and accommodates most standard twin mattresses. The crib took our test subjects only 23 minutes to assemble.

Another crib that is highly rated one of the top cribs, the Sprout Crib is made with an environmentally-friendly harvest of Baltic birch that conforms to all U.S., Canadian, Australian and European safety standards. It also features a chic minimalist design that will not be a problem with any bedroom decor. The Sprout is one of the tiniest cribs we've tested, weighing just 6kg, making it easy to move around and has an excellent travel bag.

The Oeuf Modern Crib, which was runner-up in our tests, is made from sustainable New Zealand pine. It has received numerous prizes from parenting magazines like BabyCenter and Babble. It has a medium-height design, and it converts from an infant crib into a toddler bed with rail or a daybed without the rail. It is easy to set up and also is aesthetically pleasing. appeal. However the slick finish could be scratched in normal use.
