How to Buy a Driving Licence in Northern Ireland

It can be difficult to get insurance for cars in Britain for Northern Ireland drivers, but it is actually much easier than you think. Understanding eligibility, choosing the right insurer and understanding the unique advantages is essential to success.

The licences issued in Northern Ireland are laminated plastic cards like European licenses, that show the bearer’s photo as well as their name (in Latin or Cyrillic) and their address at home as well as the categories they are allowed to use and their signature.

How do I apply for a NI driving license

The NI driving license consists of two parts: the plastic photocard, and the paper counterpart. A new driver may obtain a photocard license up to the day prior to the day of his or her 17th birthday. However, they can't drive till their date of birth. To obtain a full driving licence, a new driver must pass both a theoretical and practical test.

You can apply online or send an application form to NDLS. You must submit a current passport-type photo when you submit your application. You will receive your new licence in approximately a week if you apply online. If you send in your application by post it could take up to 3 weeks.

NDLS provides a range of information, tips and forms on its website for drivers. You can download an eye report (DL3 form), medical fitness guidance and forms, and health and driving information leaflets. Epilepsy sufferers are required to fill out the FEP1 form to inform NDLS about their condition.

It is legally required to carry your driver's licence whenever you are in the vehicle. Driving without a valid driver's licence is illegal and could lead to an arrest and a fine from An Garda S ochana. You may not have to exchange your EU/EEA driving license if you're a border worker who regularly travels between Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland. The exception applies if you are employed on a temporary contract and then return to your home country for the duration of your contract.

The driving agency will contact you to renew your license when you reach the age of 70. This will happen approximately two months prior to the expiration date of your current licence and then every three years after that. In the meantime, until you receive this notification, you should continue renewing your license in the UK/NI region by filling out the DL1R renewal form and submitting it to NDLS along with your current photocard.

Licence holders who are from outside the EEA and the UK have to change their licences when they relocate to the Republic of Ireland. If you have codes on your driving licence that indicate a bus minibus, trailer, or bus (category d1 and d1e) or that indicate it is not for reward or hire the codes can't be transferred to an Irish licence.

The theory test

The test is a theory one and consists of 50 questions on road signs and markings. The answers are displayed on the screen and you have to tick one of the choices that best match the question. You can alter your answer at any point during the test. However you must ensure that you choose the correct answer. You could earn a certain number points based on the answers you provide. You can practice your theory test by using the online DVSA mock tests. These are available on the DVSA website, and a few public libraries also have these. Bring your photocard and paper equivalent to the test center. You must arrive 15 minutes prior to the test.

Online applications are the quickest and easiest way to schedule your test. You can download the application form (pdf) or download it on the NDLS site or from an NDLS center. You can also contact the NDLS Customer Service team to book an appointment by phone or post. If you want to reschedule or cancel your test, you must do so at least 5 business days prior to the time of your appointment. If you don't, you'll forfeit the test fee.

You must bring an ID with a valid photo on the day of the test, for example an EU passport or an UK passport that has an active NI address. You can also bring electronic proof of your identity, such a bank statement with your name and NI address.

It is advisable to use official RSA revision materials to improve your chances of passing the test. You can purchase the RSA learning portal subscription and books or borrow them from the local library. Also, make sure to check the latest edition of the RSA theory test questions.

You can request an interpreter or assistant to help you with your theory test if you have special requirements. This can be done by marking the appropriate box on your theory test application form (pdf). You can also request a sign language interpreter by calling the 0818 606106.

The practical test

If you are a holder of a UK provisional driving license and want to take a theory or a practical test for a motorcycle, car or bus/lorry, or both, in Northern Ireland, then you must be a resident of the province. To prove this, you must fill out a residency declaration form to the DVA before booking your test. Check out the privacy notice of the DVA to learn how they manage any personal information you send them.

The first step of the process is passing the test in theory. It is divided into two sections, a multiple-choice section and a section on danger perception. To pass the test, a candidate must correctly answer 43 out of 50 questions. Those who pass can take their practical driving test.

The driving test can be conducted in a representative vehicle or the candidate's own. If a candidate chooses to use their own vehicle, they should ensure that it is roadworthy, has their L-plates front and rear as well as valid insurance and the original NCT disc (if applicable). If the examiner finds any problems, like lights or tyres not functioning the test will be cancelled.

After passing the driving test, the candidate receives an award certificate that acts as an interim Category B licence for two years. This allows them to drive, get full insurance for their car and purchase a car before they receive their permanent license in the mail.

The driver is allowed to only have a provisional license for two years. However, the applicant can also take professional instruction with a licensed driving instructor and be trained to drive on a motorway and will be able to get a full licence sooner than they would have otherwise been able to.

The driving test may be cancelled by the candidate if they cancel at least three days in advance. If they fail to provide the required notice, they will be denied any refund.

The cost for the driving test

A driving licence is an official document that permits the holder to drive a motor vehicle on public roads. In the United Kingdom this document is administered the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. In Northern Ireland it is issued by NDLS (National Driving Licence Service).

If you are applying for a NI driving licence you must present some identification proof like a passport or a UK birth certificate. You will also have to sign and take a picture of your application. These requirements are in place to ensure that only drivers who meet the minimum requirements of driving in Northern Ireland are granted a license.

The applicants may be required to take a medical examination, depending on their health and age. If you're not sure if you will require medical reports, the NDLS has more information.

The NDLS offers a number of exemptions to these requirements. However, in Buy Northern Ireland Driving Licence to apply for an exemption you must provide a completed medical report from your doctor.

Once you have completed all the required documents, you can visit an NDLS centre to complete your application in person. The NDLS will use your documentation to verify your identity, and you will be required to take your photograph taken and signed digitally. You will receive a copy of the photo which you can keep in your vehicle for reference, if you're arrested by police.

You will be required to provide an example vehicle to conduct your test. The vehicle must be roadworthy and possess an NCT disc that is valid front and rear, insurance coverage and original motor tax discs.

It is recommended that you schedule your driving test in advance. It is crucial to make your test reservations as soon as you can. There are waiting lists for certain tests. The NDLS also provides a phone booking service, which can be helpful for those who do not want to travel long distances for an testing center. The service can be reached at 028 902 0410. The cost for a Northern Ireland driving test is PS85 for cars, motorcycles or mopeds; PS80 for taxis and PS87 for lorry and bus drivers.
