Choosing the Best Crib Newborn

The Westport Cot Bed is an elegant crib that will look stunning in a Scandi-design nursery. It also provides a good variety of versatility with three mattress support height levels and the ability to transform into a toddler bed.

Bassinets are a good option when you live in a smaller home. Cribs can take up more space. However, a lot of parents prefer a crib due to security reasons.

Safety

Choosing the best crib newborn is crucial to your baby's health and well-being. You must ensure that it is in line with the current safety standards, and is free of dangers that could cause harm during sleep. It should be strong and well-constructed, without loose parts that could catch on clothing or present the risk of choking. It is also crucial to follow the manufacturer's guidelines for assembly and use and regularly inspect the crib for indications of wear or damage.

The first thing you need to check is the space between the slats. It should not be more than 2 and 3/8 inches, to keep your baby's head or legs from getting caught between them. You should also be able to easily reach and see your baby's crib. If you can't, the slats are too close together and need to be a bit more spacious.

The mattress support system is an additional aspect to take into consideration when selecting the crib. It should be adjustable to different levels so that you can lower the mattress as your baby grows. This will help to reduce the chance of your child getting out of the crib as is a common occurrence as they learn to crawl.

Other safety features to consider include an upholstered sheet that fits the mattress securely, and solid and stable construction. You should also choose a crib with fixed sides, rather than ones with drop sides, which can be hazardous for your baby. You should also sleep in the same room with your baby until they are old enough for them to be able to go off on their own.

Last but not least, ensure that the crib is placed away from radiators and windows and that hanging items such as blind cords or curtains are not in reach. It is also recommended to remove any items that might pose a choking hazard like blankets or pillows. Be wary of buying second-hand cribs, as they may not be in compliance with current safety standards or have been recalled for other reasons.

Design

It is crucial to keep in mind that cribs may appear similar, but must meet the strict safety standards. Most of the cribs that we examined are constructed in a similar fashion to ensure the structural solidity. For instance, many have circular bars that don't have any gaps or rough areas that could catch or pinch the baby. We also tested and rated each crib for how easily it was to use and to assemble. More parts can mean more confusion, so we recommend choosing one that has a few easy-to-follow directions to minimize frustration.

One of our top cribs is the Evolur Sprout Crib, which is designed with an elegant, contemporary style and comes in a variety of color options, including some two-toned. It also has a mattress that is universal and is Greenguard Gold certified to have minimal volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that could release gas into the nursery.

Stork Craft Equinox 3 in 1 is a different alternative. This crib is sleek, modern and minimal in design. It's ideal for modern nurseries. The crib is available in a variety of colors and four different mattress heights, so your baby can use it as a toddler or newborn. We tested this crib and found it to be extremely sturdy and stable, without flexing or creaking when a child weighed a lot of weight inside.

Convertible cribs are a fantastic option if you are planning to have more children. These cribs can be converted into a bed for toddlers and then a full-size mattress, giving you an excellent value for your money. The Sweet2Sleep Crib is a prime example of a convertible crib which received excellent marks from our test parents. The side rail that can be removed was loved by a lot of parents for making feeding their children at night more secure and less stressful. They also stated that the crib was spacious enough space for their baby to rest comfortably while mom and dad were asleep.

If you're looking for a classic style, the Carter's by DaVinci Colby 4-in-1 crib is a good option. This crib is cheaper than the Stork Craft and comes with a timeless design that will complement most all nursery. It has three different heights for the mattress however some parents and toddlers may find it a bit shallow.

Mattress

Babies are messy and a washable crib mattress is essential. Spitting up from diapers and baby spit can cause mattresses to become damp and dirty and result in mildew or bacterial growth that could affect infants. Look for a product that can be wiped down with cloths or cleaned with mild cleaner, and choose a waterproof mattress cover to help prevent liquids from getting into the mattress and causing health problems.

Choose mattresses that are rated to last up to 10 years, which means it's prepared for toddlers and beyond. A lot of the mattresses in this review are reversible with toddler and infant sides, which will let you use them right from birth until your child is old enough to be a full-size bed.

A mattress that is firm for the crib is ideal because it supports their spines while they're developing. A firm sleeping surface can also reduce the chance of SIDS. This is due to the fact that mattresses that are soft increase the possibility that a child's head will sink into it.

Check the label of the mattress to make sure it complies with Consumer Product Safety Commission standards. The CPSC requires that mattresses be tested for flammability, waterproofing, lead and other chemicals that could pose danger to infants. There are also certifications like Greenguard CertiPUR, GOTS and CertiPURUS which are a great indication that the mattress has been tested for the presence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that could harm infants their nervous and respiratory systems.

The weight of the mattress is another thing to take into consideration. The regular changes to sheets at night require you to lift and move the mattress, so if you have difficulty lifting heavy objects or don't want to take on a heavy product then consider getting a mattress that is lighter for your crib. Newton Wovenaire, for example, is only 8 pounds, while Naturepedic Organic Crib Mattress – Dual Firmness weighs 20lbs. This makes it one of the heavier mattresses in this review. It is also made of foam, not woven-core inners. This makes it easier to move around compared to a traditional coil mattress.

top ranked cribs will appreciate a crib that is easy to assemble. Look for one with hardware that is securely secured with no sharp edges or rough spots that could pinch your baby's skin. Avoid cribs with drop-sides and headboard/footboard cuts -- these features don't meet today's safety standards.

If you decide to buy a convertible crib, you'll need to purchase an additional kit to convert it into an adult bed. These kits are sold separately by most manufacturers. They're usually inexpensive, and they'll assist your child in transitioning to a bigger bed more seamlessly.

Many new parents appreciate the longevity that is offered by the convertible crib and they're a great option for families with multiple children. The cribs are built to last, and they can be converted into toddler beds, daybeds or full-size beds.

The Sprout Crib, another top-rated crib, is made from sustainable harvested Baltic birch. It is compliant with all U.S. safety standards, in addition to those of Australia, Canada, and Europe. It is a minimalist and stylish design that will fit in with any bedroom decor. The Sprout is one of the most lightweight cribs we've tested, weighing just 6kg, making it easy to move around and has an excellent travel bag.

A runner-up in our testing the Oeuf Modern Crib is built from sustainably sourced New Zealand pine. It has won numerous awards from parenting magazines like BabyCenter and Babble. It has a medium height profile and can be converted from an infant crib to a toddler bed, with or without rail. It's easy to set up and has lots of appeal. However, the thin finish is susceptible to scratches in normal use.
