Evolution Korea

For a long time the Korean scientific community resisted engaging with creationists for fear of giving the movement more credence. But silence is no anymore an option.

The STR has been fighting to get the content on evolution from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. But this is merely one aspect of the development paradigm's evolution.

What is Evolution?

???? ??? ???? is a theory of science that explains changes in genetic traits over time. The theory is based on fact that living organisms adapt to their environments, which can cause variations in genes or even complete genomes. Over time these changes could result in the creation of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It describes how individuals with advantageous traits are more likely to reproduce and survive than those with less favorable traits. This differing reproduction may, over time, lead to the creation and evolution of new species.

The term "evolution", which comes from the Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has changed in both science and in other fields. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that the existing species changed into other species in a planned manner. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist pupil who invented the term "transmutation" to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.

In recent years evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living creatures develop characteristics that enhance their chances of survival or ability to produce offspring. Over time the genetic variability could result in the development of completely new biological functions or physical traits in the same population. Such a shift in gene frequency is known as natural selection and it is the main driver of evolutionary changes. However, non-genetic changes such as increases in the muscle mass as a result of diet or exercise cannot be considered to be examples of evolution since they are not passed on to future generations.

Creationists are using the argument that evolution is controversial despite the fact that it has been proven to be valid by a multitude of scientific tests and that it has stood the test of time. They argue that the concept should not be taught at school. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories over evolution in textbooks for high school. This includes the removal of all references about the evolutionary origins for humans as well as Archaeopteryx - a feathered dino that is believed to be the ancestor of birds.

Why is Evolution Important?

Evolution explains the origins and evolution of Earth and all living species. It is also a foundation of biology that helps scientists understand how living organisms work and grow. Evolution also helps us understand the connections between different species. Scientists study evolution to better understand nature and make useful discoveries like new medicines.

The evidence for evolution of biological species is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that explains as much about the universe and life on this planet. It has been thoroughly examined and confirmed for many years. Many people, even some religious leaders, are in favor of the scientific theory. It is crucial to keep in mind that evolutionary biology isn't in interfere with religious beliefs since it only focuses on physical objects, events and processes.

Many religious people have found a way to reconcile evolution with their convictions. For example some Christians believe that God created the world through evolution and that humans have an ancestral connection with other animals.

It is crucial that science educators stand up for the teaching evolution. In certain countries, the opposition to evolution has been growing. In the United States some states have taken measures to restrict teaching evolution. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research is pushing for the removal of textbooks on the evolution of horses as well as the bird ancestor Archaeopteryx.

Although these are alarming developments, it is important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a broad range of sources, such as fossils, genetic studies and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence.

The vast majority of scientists supports the theory of evolution. The reasons for this support vary. Certain scientists study evolution in order to discover practical solutions such as developing new medicines or enhancing existing ones. Others do this to improve the lives of animals and plant species, usually for the benefit humans. Some are simply curious, while still others have a deep religious belief in God and seek to know how the universe functions.

What is Creationism?

Creationists are those who believe that God created the universe and everything within it. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken seriously. Many creationists are Christians, but not all. Creationists typically fall into one of two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

YECs are the most well known form of creationist, and they believe that God created the world exactly as described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the creation's six days is true, and that the universe and life on Earth began only recently.

OECs may be less well-known However, their beliefs are just as fierce as those of YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is a myth.

Both forms of creationism deny that scientific principles such as biogenesis and natural selection could explain how life began on Earth. They assert that evolution is inconceivable because it requires miracles. The pioneers of modern science shunned miracles in fear that they might lose their credibility.

Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution and special creation, and refer to their belief as "theistic evolution.” This is sometimes referred to as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from created kinds." The theory says that God creates species from scratch and then allows these to change over time. Then the evolutionary changes create new species that are identical to the original species.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event called the Great Flood. They believe that the original species were all created at the same time, and that they developed gradually afterward. They reject the concept of abiogenesis and assert that self-replicating living cannot come from non-living matter.

In general, creationists are against teaching evolution at schools. This position is supported by a variety of professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, some academic institutions and scientists are more flexible and allow the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curricula.

What is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of creationism typically think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. Publishers of high-school textbooks recently announced that they would eliminate the mention of evolution in their editions. A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. The STR has scored its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of the avian, the Archeopteryx. Its sights are now set on removing excerpts from Darwin's notorious finch research as well as on human evolution, too.

STR claims to have the support of 4,000 families and individuals. The goal, according to STR is to clear the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints a negative view for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of biology students teachers found that about half do not believe in evolution. The reasons for this aren't entirely evident, but they could be due to religion or the absence of creation scientists in the United States.

The KACR has achieved a lot through its seminars and lectures in the past. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and the book. One of them was a textbook on natural science with a cosmological perspective. This led to an interest in the college community. In 1991, a professor along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught to students today.

On August 6th and 7th of 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. The event was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six foreign lecturers including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to thousands of people. KACR and its members have been delivering lectures on creation science at major seminaries, too. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
