How to Repair a Remote Key

Although most remote key fobs boast amazing battery life, they will eventually get worn out. Sometimes it's as simple as changing the batteries, but sometimes there are more serious issues.

Take the remote apart and clean the buttons. Then bend them out and in. These techniques might be all you need to get your key fob working.


Battery

Car key remotes are powered by CR2025 or CR2032 batteries and can usually be replaced when the fob is functional. If it's not then you can remove the fob and examine the battery terminals and buttons for any indication of looseness or broken parts. It is essential to choose an entirely new case since the original one is likely to be a bit shabby, and it is essential that the circuit board is set correctly inside the case. The circuit board is responsible for the function of the key fob. It can be tested using a normal multimeter by setting it to the RF (radio frequency) mode and holding a radio scanner tuned to the frequency the key fob uses next to it, listening for pulsing signals when a pressing the button.

Another thing to look at is the button contact points on the keypad, which might have become damaged or loose over time. Soldering them back into place can often restore them to full functionality, unless they snap completely.

Buttons

If your key fob buttons aren't working anymore or are difficult to push, you can purchase a new dorman or motormite remote key housing online for the lowest cost for the model/year/make. Then, you can slide the circuit board out of your old case into the new. You may need to adjust the position of the circuit board for certain models. You can then use aluminum foil with double sided tape to adhere it to the black contact points on the buttons.

Programming

The key fob and receiver inside your car are connected, but this connection can be corrupted. A professional will assess your vehicle to determine the year, make, and model. They will then use specialist equipment to recouple or program a blank transponder chip or fob (or duplicate the key if possible). Then broken car key repair test the remote to be sure it works.

It is important to be careful when reprogramming an unprogrammed key, since the process can be complicated and different manufacturers require slightly different steps. It is also possible to miss a step, or wait too long before exiting the programming mode, which is why it is recommended to work with professionals with extensive knowledge of your car's security system to reduce the chance of harming the car.
