Why Buy A1 and A2 Driver's Licenses?

The A1 licence provides a boost in terms of riding and training compared to the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT). A1 motorcycles are limited to 125cc engines.

The new licence format introduced in 2011 shows the name of the bearer, his photo as well as the date of issue and allowed categories on the laminated plastic card. You can find these cards at driving schools as well as ongoing training centers.

What is an A1 licence?

The A1 is the first step towards driving a motorcycle or a scooter for children. It is the only license that teenagers aged 17-18 can obtain and allows them to ride bikes of up to 125cc. You can also carry a person and ride on motorways without needing to display learner licenses both front and back.

Getting an A1 license doesn't mean that you can ride any bike you would like, but it's an excellent opportunity to learn to ride on a budget, with the added benefit of being able to move to the next level (Restricted A2 Licence for 19-23 year olds or Direct Access Scheme A Licence for 24 years and over).

additional reading must be at least 16 years old to be able to take the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT). It's a two-part course that includes theory and riding in the real world. The theory lessons are focused on the rules of the road and hazard perception.

In the practical sessions you will be taught the fundamental techniques required to operate a scooter or motorbike. This includes maneuvering in an eight-point figure while riding, wheeling the bike and slow control. To get your A1 license, you'll need both the theory and the practical test.

After two years of driving an A1 bike you can upgrade to an A2 bike that is more powerful in case you aren't satisfied with the power. However, this means you will need to complete the CBT program again and pass an exam for the new bike.

Honda offers a variety of bikes that you can choose from if you are considering upgrading your A1 license. The A1 license is valid for 2 years. After this, you are able to choose to take a practical test to upgrade to the A license. However, you should be aware that the A licence restricts your ability to drive certain vehicles and increases the legal limit for alcohol for drivers to 80 mg/100ml.

How do I obtain an A1 license?

After you have completed your CBT it's time to take the Theory Test. It's a multiple choice test and it's recommended to purchase the official revision guide from the DVSA to help you get through the test. The next step is to take the practical A1 test. This test will permit you to ride a moped as high as 130cc without plates and to carry passengers. This is a much more comprehensive test than the CBT and includes manoeuvring tasks such as wheeling your bike and completing an eight-figure figure.

If you're over 19 you can upgrade your A1 license to an A2 license after two years, which will allow you to use a motorcycle or scooter of up to 125cc and 11kW without L plates, or carrying passengers. When you reach 24, you'll be able to move up to the full A license by using Direct Access.

Some riders prefer to keep their A1 licences for life. If you plan to upgrade to a larger and more powerful bike in the future You must pass your A2 test to upgrade your license category. It's also worthwhile to consider getting additional training after you've completed your CBT and CBT, since this will enhance your riding abilities and increase your confidence.
