Filter Coffee Makers

In a sea of costly barista-style coffee machines, filter coffee makers are the reliable, simple original method of making coffee. They are inexpensive and can be found on the high street for around PS20.

These filter coffee makers have various functions, including a clock to get you up with an espresso at the perfect time. They make sure that the water is heated to the right temperature to brew filter coffee.

1. Chemex

The sleek, stylish glass Chemex coffee maker has been a favourite amongst coffee enthusiasts since its invention by Peter Schlumbohm in 1941. The hourglass-shaped flask is similar to an Erlenmeyer flask which is probably the source of the name from (or perhaps Fleming got inspiration from it when writing From Russia With Love). It's been a coffee icon for its stylish aesthetics and crystal clear filter brews.

Like other pour over coffee makers, such as the V60 dripper and Melitta, this filter coffee maker is a manual method of brewing where hot water is poured over the ground in a steady controlled way that allows for an even extraction of flavor. The key to a good Chemex brew is to ensure that your grinds are medium fine and you are using the right type of filter. In contrast to the paper filters that are thin and found in the majority of filter coffee machines, Chemex uses thicker 'lab-grade' filters which remove more of the coffee fines and oils that can give your brew a bitter taste.

Once the Chemex is full, you simply take the filter out and the brew is ready to drink. A good tip is to let the brew "bloom' for 30 seconds before pouring. This allows the ground expand and absorb the water, ensuring that it's not over extracted.

The only drawback of the Chemex coffee maker is that it takes longer to make a cup of coffee than other filter coffee makers and requires some know-how to achieve the most effective results. It's not as efficient at making large quantities of coffee as an electric filter machine. Therefore, it's best for those who prefer small batches and manual brewing.

2. Moccamaster

The Moccamaster may not have the bells and whistles that other modern machines do, but it is still an efficient machine that will never lose its appeal. The brewing process heats water to just above the boiling point which is ideal for filter coffee because it eliminates bitterness that can sometimes be associated with boiled coffee.

The fact that the Moccamaster is able to keep the water at an optimal temperature throughout the entire brew process, makes it extremely energy efficient. Additionally, its design permits it to be taken apart and cleaned, ensuring that the components are clean and fresh between uses.

When it comes to a good cup of filter coffee you should make use of a medium-fine grind, similar to a Chemex or pour-over brewer--to make sure the grounds are evenly dispersed and don't block water flow. The Moccamaster also comes with shower heads that spray the grounds to ensure a consistent extraction.

The Moccamaster has a further advantage: it is very easy to maintain. It's made from high-quality materials, including stainless steel and BPA- and phthalate-free plastics. Its flat water tank cover is a breeze to remove, and its wide mouth makes it easy to pour water into--which can be crucial during those coordination-challenged predawn hours.

The Moccamaster is an excellent choice for coffee lovers who are looking to purchase a top-quality filter coffee maker. Its build quality and functionality are backed up by an impressive list of coffee aficionados who are using it in their cafes, roasters, and coffee shops--including the triple-Michelin-starred restaurant Alain Ducasse! 3. Wilfa

The Norwegian company Wilfa produces amazing filter coffee machines with a an emphasis on simplicity, efficiency and stunning design. Their products are a perfect example of Scandinavian minimalism. The Classic Tall Filter Coffee Maker is one such example It is a striking nerdy look that makes this auto brewer stand out from the crowd. This premium filter coffee maker also exudes confidence and comes with a 5-year guarantee which guarantees its durability.

The design of this brewer makes it simple to set up, fill with water and start brewing. This brewer has an 1 litre water tank that is easy to clean. The pump technology ensures the entire system is emptied with every brew. This is in contrast to other filter coffee machines that leave water behind, which can impact subsequent brews. This lets you use fresh water for every new batch of coffee, ensuring that your coffee will always taste great.

With the Classic Plus, you'll find an easy-to-use design with many useful features including a manual flow control wheel (close it for a while to get more strength in your brew), overflow drain in the filter holder, a light that reminds you to descale the appliance, automatic switch off and a drip stopper that can be manually operated to stop spills from the hotplate. This brewer warms the water quickly to a desirable temperature of 92-96degC for optimal extraction.

This brewer is capable of making between one and 10 cups of filter coffee. Each cup is generously 250ml in size and takes between three and four minutes. The maker comes with the stainless steel thermo jug for keeping the brewed coffee at the right temperature for drinking. This is a great feature that makes it stand out from other filter coffee makers which only keep the coffee warm.

4. Bonavita

Unlock your coffee's full potential with this top-rated auto drip brewer. The Bonavita Connoisseur is a sleek and minimalist appliance that's easy to use. It has a stainless-steel carafe with a 1.3-liter capacity and can be used with standard flat bottom basket filters (not the cones in #4 that are recommended by Moccamaster and other SCAA-certified machines).

The design of the Bonavita is simple and clean and comes with a built-in filter holder that holds the filters in place while brewing. This makes it easier to avoid mess during the brewing process. It also comes with a shower head that ensures uniform distribution of water over the grounds, resulting in a better extraction of aromas and flavors.

The Bonavita's ability of controlling the temperature of the water is a further reason why it's an excellent filter coffee maker. The thermocouple measurements taken from the brew-basket confirmed that the water reached the perfect temperature within minutes. The average internal temperature was 194.6 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the rest of the brewing process, just changing a few degrees either way.

Like other filter coffee makers that can be programmed such as the Bonavita can be programmed to start at a specific time and set to a particular time for brewing. It can also be set to a specific temperature and brew size. This feature makes it possible to brew just one cup at a go which is great for busy families.

The Bonavita isn't equipped with a pre-infusion feature that can enhance flavor by allowing more coffee grounds to be soaked in water. It can also be difficult to accurately determine the amount of coffee grounds needed because different coffees are of varying density. It's best to weigh the grounds using a scale instead of using a tablespoon, since this is the most precise way to measure it.

5. Melitta

From the brand that invented filter coffee is this machine that has a number of features to improve your coffee enjoyment of brewing. There's a drip stop built into the filter holder to avoid spills when removing the jug. There's also a handy keep-warm function, so you can take pleasure in your freshly made coffee for up to 40 minutes after the brew has been completed.

The jug and basket are made from high-quality borosilicate glass. The jug and the filter basket can be cleaned by hand or in the dishwasher. The epour also comes with a practical LED limescale indicator, so you can tell when it's time to descale. The model also has a built in bloom setting which helps to release unwanted trapped CO2 that could lead to a bitter tasting cup of coffee.

This machine is ideal for those who are looking for a machine with smaller footprint. The Aroma Elegance is a little wider and taller than the Moccamaster It can still fit in a corner due its angle design. It is easy to operate using just one hand, and features clearly laid out selection button layout. The tank of water is easily removed and makes it easy to fill.

The machine can also be programmed to prepare coffee at a particular time. This will save time and effort, allowing you to awake to a clean warm filter. Aroma Elegance also comes with other features that can make your brewing experience better by allowing you to program water softness, auto-descaling, and 3 settings that keep warm. Melitta is also an eco-friendly product made from sustainably-sourced materials and chlorine-free paper in their filters. This is evident by their products and packaging that are 100 100% recyclable.
