The NDLS started to issue electronic licences in January 2014 which contain a microchip. These are used to help identify and secure the identity of licence holders. Police officers may also use them to verify the information of drivers in certain situations, like during a traffic collision.

Other AFVs, such as campervans and motorhomes as well in special vehicles for disabled people have onboard equipment which increases their weight. This can push them above the allowance of 3,500kg of a standard licence. Additionally certain goods vehicles like those used by emergency services and local authority fleets, require equipment to increase their payload. This could take them over the allowance of 3,500kg on a standard license.

The current licence design, first introduced in 2011 is laminated plastic cards that are similar to European driving licences in terms of size and appearance. The card has the driver's name, birth date, driving history, categories allowed, place/date issued, and a photo. It is fully compliant with the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic and replaces older booklet-style and credit-card licences.
