Lever/Lever

A lever is a rigid bar that pivots around a central point (known as a fulcrum). When you apply a force to the end of the lever it is likely to cause it to turn the fulcrum to the direction of the force applied. This rotates the force and lets you lift or move things that normally require more force to lift.

The distance between the fulcrum to the point where you apply the force determines the distance the lever can be moved. This is called the mechanical advantage. The advantage of mechanical force increases as the lever gets extended. You can calculate the mechanical advantage by dividing distance from the fulcrum point to the point at which you are applying force by the distance between the fulcrum point and end of the lever.

Levers also have various effects depending on how the forces are applied. For example, a class 2 lever has a tendency to turn in the opposite direction as the force applied to it (like a totter-totter). The forces produced by pushing on the handle of a front door will result in rotational effects similar to those.

However, levers don't create energy. They simply increase the force you exert by converting a small amount of effort across a large distance into a larger amount of force that is applied over a smaller distance. This is what enables you to accomplish more in a shorter amount of time, and that is why levers are often employed to lift heavy objects or moving large amounts of cargo. The lever principle is utilized in everyday tools like crowbars. hammer claws fishing rods, hammer claws, and your own legs, when you are standing on the hand brake of your car.
