Choosing the Best Crib Newborn

The Westport Cot Bed is an elegant crib that will look amazing in a modern Scandi nursery. It also provides a good deal of flexibility, with three different mattress support heights and the possibility of transforming into a toddler bed.

Cribs can take up a lot space, so bassinets could be a better option if your house is small. Many parents choose a crib because of safety concerns.

Safety

Choosing the best crib newborn is crucial to your baby's health and well-being. It is important to ensure that the crib conforms to current safety standards and is free of dangers that could cause harm to your baby during their sleep. It should be strong and well-constructed, without loose parts that could catch on clothing or pose a choking hazard. It is also important to follow the manufacturer's instructions for assembly and use and to regularly check the crib for signs of wear or damage.

Check the distance between the slats. It should not be more than 2 and 3/8 inches apart, to prevent your baby's head or legs from getting trapped in between them. You should also be able to easily reach and observe your baby's crib. If you cannot see, the slats need to be wider and not so close to each other.

Another aspect of the crib to consider is the mattress support system. It is important to adjust the heights, so that you can lower the mattress as your child grows. This will reduce the risk of your baby climbing out of the crib which is a frequent situation as they begin to crawl.

Other safety features to look for include a fitted sheet that fits the mattress securely, and an enduring and solid construction. Choose a crib with fixed sides instead of one with drop sides. Drop sides could be dangerous for your child. You should also share the same bedroom as your baby until they are old enough for them to be able to go off on their own.

Also, make sure that the crib is away from radiators and windows and that any hanging objects such as blind cords or curtains are kept out of reach. It is also recommended to remove any items that could be danger to your child's health, such as pillows or blankets. Be cautious when buying second-hand cribs since they may not meet current safety standards, or have been removed from the market.

Design

It is crucial to remember that cribs may look identical, but they must comply with strict safety standards. The majority of cribs we reviewed are designed in a similar fashion to ensure structural solidity. Most cribs feature circular bars without gaps or rough surfaces that could trap a baby or pinch them. We also evaluated each crib and rated it for its simplicity of use and assembly. We recommend choosing one with fewer components to avoid confusion.

One of our favorite cribs is the Evolur Sprout Crib, which has an elegant, contemporary style and comes in several colors, including two-toned. It also comes with a universal mattress fit and is Greenguard Gold certified to have the lowest amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that could release gas into the nursery.

Stork Craft Equinox 3 in 1 is a different option. This crib is sleek, modern and minimal in design. It's perfect for modern nurseries. The crib is available in a variety of finishes and four different mattress heights, so your baby can use it as a newborn or toddler. This crib was very stable and sturdy. It didn't flex or creak when a heavy child climbed in.

Convertible cribs are a great option if you plan to have more children. Many of these options can transform into a toddler bed, and then a full-size bed providing a long-lasting product for the money you spend. The Sweet2Sleep Crib is a prime example of a convertible crib that earned excellent marks from our parents who tested it. Several of them commented that the side rails with a drop-down feature made feeding at night more secure and easier, and the crib was big enough for the co-sleeping baby to feel at ease while dad and mom were sleeping.

If you're looking for a classic style, the Carter's by DaVinci Colby 4-in-1 crib is a good choice. This crib is cheaper than the Stork Craft and has a timeless style that is perfect for every nursery. It comes with three mattress heights, however it could be a bit shallow for some toddlers and petite parents.

Mattress

A washable crib mattress will be useful for infants. Baby spills and other accidents can make mattresses damp and dirty, leading to mildew and bacterial infections that could affect infants. Choose a product that is easy to clean with an mild cleaner or cloth. Also, select a waterproof cover to stop liquids from getting into the mattress.

Find a mattress that is that is rated up to 10 years, so it is suitable for toddlers. Many of the mattresses we've reviewed here are reversible, with a toddler and infant side. This lets you use them from the time of birth until your child is old enough to be their own bed size.

A firm mattress for the crib is ideal, as it will support their spines while they are developing. A firm sleeping surface will also lower the risk of SIDS. This is because mattresses that are soft increase the chance that a baby's head will sink into it.

Check the label on the mattress to make sure it complies with Consumer Product Safety Commission standards. The CPSC requires that mattresses be tested for flammability, waterproofing lead, as well as other chemicals that might pose risk to infants. You can also find certifications like Greenguard, CertiPUR and GOTS which show that the mattress has been tested for volatile organic compounds that can harm infants' nervous and respiratory systems.

Another consideration is the weight of a mattress for a crib. If you are unable to lift heavy objects or you don't want to move a heavy object, you may want a mattress that is lighter. For instance the Newton Wovenaire is incredibly light at just 8 lbs, while the Naturepedic Organic Breathable Crib Mattress - Dual Firmness is 20 pounds, which makes it one of the heaviest in this review. It is also made of foam instead of woven-core inners. This makes it much easier to move around compared to a traditional coil mattress.
