Toto was expanding its production facilities in the overseas market and operating in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the People's Republic of China. Origins

The band has a varied musical background but their biggest success came in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a major blockbuster but not without its difficulties. The record companies put Toto under pressure to release the top single or they would rescind them. Toto was able to do this through the aid of the smash hit "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is a result of their previous experience. Before forming the group, members worked as session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their sonic signature has since become the standard for '80s pop, and has influenced many contemporary artists.

The album starts out hard with tracks like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to write fantastic AOR tunes that slowly get into your head. However, the album also includes some more mellow, jazzy tracks, like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations, a song that combines folk with distortion AOR and could sound completely wrong, but actually works amazingly well.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes started to plummet. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career. The band had a variety of drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band following drug-related charges. The band continued with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Toto released Isolation despite the turbulence. It was not as well-liked as IV. However, the band still was able to release a chart-topping album in the year 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the end of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet format of the previous albums. It was a more powerful, consistent effort with a harder edge than Hydra. The more experimental sound of Turn Back reflected the growth of the band. Bobby Kimball's growing proficiency was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard work was as well more refined, more precise and less akin to earlier efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the band recorded an Amsterdam live show that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released their new studio album just a few months after and then embarked on a tour around the world to help promote the album. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to find songs that had never been recorded prior to. The album was released in 2001 as a double album titled Then & Now. It was the first album by the band not to feature one single track with the word "A" in its title. It also included one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that restricted his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes along with the other original members of Asia - Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility of officially restructuring the band. This lineup, minus Howe who was busy with Yes at the period, was later renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also featured an appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
