3 Wheeler Buggies

A three-wheeled buggy is ideal for off-road terrain and offers an easy ride for babies. They are also simpler to push and maneuver than a four wheel buggy and are especially suitable for those with fabric slings or modular seat units, which are placed in a tight position within the frame to provide the best design and weight distribution.

Stability

A three-wheeler has great stability, which is the reason it is a great option for off-road walks (especially with an all-terrain or off-road-style seat). These buggys often have oversized front tires that can withstand bumps, kerbs, and rough terrain. Some have a lockable wheels on the front for additional stability while driving on uneven terrain.

It is important to keep in mind that 3-wheel buggies have lower center of gravity than their 4-wheeled counterparts which means they are more likely to fall over. That said, the best 3-wheel pushchairs are designed with perfect geometry and engineering to ensure they are stable in all weather conditions. They should be able turn on a dime and be able to be controlled with one hand. They also feature a 360o rotating front wheel which makes them perfect for navigating difficult terrain.

For surfaces that are extremely challenging, look out for a model with air-filled tyres also known as pneumatic tyres, which are made to handle non-paved tracks and are able to deal with dirt, gravel, and so on. Many all-terrain buggies include a swivelling wheel on the front which can be locked for extra stability when you're dealing with rough terrain.

A 3-wheeled pram is a great option for runners and those who enjoy walking fast uphill. This is particularly true if you intend to connect to a car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is a great example, with a wide-facing seat that reclines flat. It also features a more comfortable 5-point harness and storage space for all your kit (plus an extension of 50+ sun hood). It's light compact and safe for use from birth. It can be used with either the car seat or carrycot. It also handles a bit of light jogging but isn't intended for serious runners.

Weight

If you're looking for a buggy that will take on tricky terrain then you want one with big wheels. These are designed to handle cobbles, grass and dirt tracks easily and still provide a smooth ride. They're also ideal for jogging since they're equipped with suspension and are simple to climb and descend kerbs. However, they are quite heavy to push.

The most suitable 3 wheel buggy for rough terrain is the Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 (pictured above). This 3-wheeler has 16 rear wheels and a lockable swivel front wheel which makes it very maneuverable. It has tyres with air that require pumping up from time to time. It can carry children up until the age of three. MFM reviewer Kath says that her toddler loved the shape of the seat and found steering it easy even with her three-year-old riding along.

Another option that is great is the Baby Jogger Versa GT, that comes with an adjustable handlebar as well as a hood that is of high-quality with 50+ UV protection. It's also easy to get up and down kerbs, and it can fit into small car boot. 3 wheeled pushchair can be used as a stroller along with a carrycot for newborns or toddlers.

Fabric slings are positioned in the frame and not on top of the frame like modular seats. This design delivers a lower center of gravity that is at the ideal height, instantly making it easier to push and lighter to kerb pop (you cannot think about the amount of times you'll have to do that as new parents!)

Seating

There are a variety of options for seating in three wheelers. For newborns you have the option to use the included carrycot and (which MFM reviewer Alice says is a cosy and comfortable lie flat bed that can be used on and off the buggy) In addition, older babies and toddlers can use the world-facing or parent facing seat unit that is roomy and padded, and comes with adjustable ventilation. The seats are not able to recline completely, but can be lowered down to the lowest position. This should still allow your child to have plenty of room and headroom.

3 wheel pushchair made of fabric is also available. It's a benefit that it is located within the frame, instead of being placed on top of it as a modular seat. This means that it has a lower centre of gravity, with a perfect weight distribution. This makes it much easier and lighter to push, particularly over bumpy terrains or curbs and MFM reviewer Kath was impressed with the way this type of seat handled these challenges.

In addition to a big shopping basket, this type of buggy generally has pretty useful features such as an extended 50+ UV hood, an easy-to-use brake pedal and some game-changing visibility lights that come up from the handlebar and can be placed in front of the passengers to improve their safety when traversing difficult terrain.

If you're seeking a single stroller that can grow with your family, there's the brand-new sport(tm) which is the first in the world to take a single infant from day one and adapt to take 2 or even 3 once your baby has grown and all within the footprint of a single buggy.

Storage

The 3-wheeled frame makes the buggy more stable to push with one hand and is also ideal for handling difficult terrain. The shopping basket is smaller than a 4-wheeler.

A high-quality ATP will have pneumatic tyres, a cushioned grip for comfort and excellent suspension. It will also be equipped to carry a carrycot and car seat which means you can use it from birth.

MFM's reviewers have discovered that the 3-wheeler frame won't pass through all doors of their homes or small car boot - be sure you know the dimensions of the buggy when it's folded prior to purchasing if you're worried about space.

It's worth looking into 3-wheelers that can accommodate 2 (or even 3!) seats as your family grows. These are the best of both worlds and can help you to save money in the future. The iCandy Strawberry Sport is among the most popular. It can be used from the day of birth as a single buggie and then converted into twin buggies when your baby is walking.

Tyres

Air filled tyres are made to provide your child with an easier ride by cushioning out bumps and uneven surfaces. You'll find these on pushchairs, such as the Phil & Ted's Sport which MFM reviewer Kath discovered to provide "an outstanding ride for my toddler". She also said that its grippy tyres made it easy to tackle cobbles and kerbs.

They can be difficult to maintain and require air pressure topped up regularly. These tyres are prone to punctures, and you should always have a repair kit as well as an spare inner tube when you're out and about.

PU tyres are found on more pushchairs than the air-filled tyres, yet they're still as sturdy. You can identify PU tire treads by their matte appearance and soft texture. They also slide easily on smooth and tightly woven surfaces.

If 3 wheeler pushchair move your hand over the tyres you can tell if they are PU or rubber. If it feels as if it's moving, then it is a PU. You can also verify whether your buggy has PU tyres simply by sliding the tyres over an even, clean surface - they'll be able to roll easily and fit snugly into their wheel hubs.

Foam tyres are able to withstand the rough terrain associated with high-performance buggies. The downside is that the foam may compress and make your buggy feel less stable since it loses its springy quality. These tyres are also noisy, as they make lots of noise when you turn and drive around town.
