Health Issues That Affect German Shepherd Life Expectancy

Regular visits to the vet, proper nutrition, and regular exercise can keep this large breed in good health.

Cushing's disease (hyperadrenocorticism) occurs when a pet's body produces too much cortisol, a natural steroid. The condition is usually caused by a tumor that has formed on the pituitary gland, or one of the adrenal glands. In 80% to 85% of cases, the tumor is located on the pituitary gland, a tiny organ located near the base of brain. Around 15% of the instances, the tumor is located on the adrenal glands which are located above the kidneys.

The deep chests of the Shepherd breed make them more susceptible to bloating. This stomach-related disorder can be deadly if the intestines twist to fill with gas, cutting off the blood flow to the stomach or spleen. This condition could be fatal in less than 30 minutes if it is not treated promptly. If your Shepherd shows signs of bloat, such as retching or heaving with little or no food coming up or an overly large stomach, or lying in a prayer posture (front feet down, rear end up), take your pet to the emergency vet immediately.

German Shepherds that experience bloat are at a higher risk of developing hip dysplasia or degenerative myelopathy. This is why it's important to keep your dog current with regular veterinary visits and preventative care.

Elbow Dysplasia

The elbow is a hinge joint that connects the humerus (the long bone of the upper forelimb) as well as the radius and the ulna (the two bones that make up the lower forelimb). The three bones must be able to fit together in a perfect way to withstand the rigors of daily movement. If they don't match perfectly, elbow dysplasia occurs. DM symptoms usually appear in older dogs, and progress to paralysis. The condition is regarded as the canine equivalent of amyotrophic lateral degeneration (Lou Gehrig's disease). Although dogs are genetically predisposed to this condition, it's not known why some dogs develop the disease whereas others do not.


Unfortunately, there's no cure for DM. The symptoms can be treated with medication, however the condition can progress and causes paralysis of the forelimbs. Some dogs are able to live for months or years with a high standard of life, but it is not uncommon for owners to choose to kill their dog when it becomes unable to stand or walk on their own.

To diagnose DM the doctor will take a detailed medical history and conduct an examination of the neurological system. The neurologist will search for other conditions that have similar clinical signs and request blood samples to test for the genetic mutations that are associated with this disorder. A cerebrospinal fluid sample will also be obtained to allow for analysis and exclude other diseases. Intervertebral Disc Disease

Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is when the inside or outside of the spinal disk "donut" does not stay where it is. Each disk has a tough fibrous outer ring called an annulus fibrosus, and an inner nucleus pulposus that is not compressible which absorbs impact. When the nucleus is herniated it can cause severe pain and paralysis. IVDD is typically a degenerative condition, however the sudden trauma can cause herniation in dogs with weak disks.

Type I IVDD is characterized by a sudden rupture into the spinal canal that is located in the nucleus of the disc. This causes intense back pain arching back, weakness of the limbs in the rear and lameness in the hind limbs. It can also be accompanied by weakness, incontinence, and incoordination. If the spinal cord becomes compressed and dies it will cause your dog to become completely paralyzed, and may be being unable to move their rear legs at all.

The development of IVDD type II is more gradual and generally occurs in older dogs. It's a result of normal "wear and tear" which results in the weak annulus fibers expanding with fluid, leading to herniation, then compression of the spinal cord. This type of IVDD is not triggered either by trauma or heavy exercise, which is not the case for Type I. The symptoms include a lack of interest or inability to turn the head.
