Types of Hob and Oven

Hobs and ovens are a common fixture in kitchens. They can be found in various styles. You can mix different types, such as electric and gas to meet your needs.

Safety features such as child and position controls could be added to a hob. They can stop children from touching the hob and stop them changing the temperature settings in error.

Types

The hob is the focal element of any kitchen and can have a significant impact on the results of your cooking. There are many kinds of hobs, and the one you choose depends on the needs of your kitchen.

Gas hobs are the classic choice, and they provide a rapid heating function and instant response to temperature fluctuations. Professional chefs prefer them because they are precise in their control. They are not as easy as other hobs to clean and could require more care.

Electric hobs are a flat ceramic surface with heated elements beneath and can come in a variety of sizes with between four and six cooking zones. Each zone has its own heating element that you can control individually. This allows you to boil potatoes on one ring and making sausages in another. This type of hob can be more efficient than gas and provides a child-safe alternative as the cooking zone only becomes hot when you place a pot on it.

Traditional ceramic hobs are a user-friendly alternative to gas and electric and are a stylish option. They have an extremely smooth and durable surface that is easy to clean. However they aren't as fast to respond to temperature changes or to cool down as other hobs.

The Domino hob is a space-saving alternative to electric and gas hobs. It has ovens underneath the cooking surface. They can be fitted into smaller kitchens with little space for installation and are suitable for flats and kitchenettes. They tend to be cheaper than standard hobs and can be energy-efficient, but they are also susceptible to damage and require more frequent maintenance.

Gas

Gas hobs are cooktops with burners that can easily be integrated into kitchen countertops for a seamless appearance. Gas hobs are typically powered by LPG or natural gas, but they can also be powered by propane gas. The sleek, modern design could add sophistication to your kitchen space.

A traditional gas stove comes with a variety of burners. There are usually four burners, however it can be as many as six. The burners can be ignited by a match or a knob. The flames are controlled by a set of valves which can be adjusted to control the temperature.

In contrast, most modern gas hobs with built-in gas are equipped with multi-flame burners that let you control the inner and outer rings of each burner to precisely manage your cooking. These burners are much faster and more reliable than older models.

In the past, it was essential for the gas stove to be constantly lit to ensure that the burners remained hot and fueled. This was a safety feature to prevent any accidents such as not turning off the oven when the stove was lit by a match or a pilot flame. Modern cookers are made with safety in mind as a top priority. They come equipped with a device to stop the flame which shuts down the burners when the pilot light is not working.

Gas stoves and hobs must be checked, cleaned and maintained regularly. To do this, you should book a visit from a Gas Safe registered engineer. They will not only be able to make sure your appliance is working correctly and safely, but they will also provide expert advice and suggestions on how to avoid problems in the near future.

Electric

When it comes to designing your ideal kitchen, the kitchen worktops, fridge freezer, and oven will always receive the most attention, however a quality hob is equally important. The type of hob that you choose will affect the way your kitchen operates and how easy for you to clean it.


Electric hobs feature heating elements under a smooth, glass surface. The glass surface is typically cleaned with a nonabrasive cleaner. These elements switch on when you turn the hob on and can be notched up to various power levels by turning or pressing the control knob. It can take them some time to get heated up, but once they have they are in place, they provide better and more consistent temperature control. They also come with indicators that inform you that a particular zone is in use or still hot from cooking.

Typically, they are available in four to six different sized rings that can be notched up to various levels of power. They are ideal for flat-based cookware however they aren't the ideal option for cast-iron pans since they can overheat. Some models have dual-ring designs (such as the Belling BEL CH602T) that permit boiling water on one ring and saute sausages on a different. Certain models come with a Boost function that focuses high-temperature elements into one ring. This is great for stirring-frying, searing meat or boiling large pots.

Induction hobs are different from standard electric models because they make use of electromagnetic fields instead of conventional gas flames to cook your food. This enables them to achieve precise temperatures in a shorter space of time and makes them extremely energy efficient. They feature a cool to the touch surface as well as flashing indicators that indicate whether a ring was used or is still hot.

Ceramic

Ceramics can be used to make functional or decorative objects. It is made by mixing clay with earthen elements, powders and water, and then firing it in a hot oven known as Kiln. Once it's made it is then covered with decorative or paint-like substances to add color and texture.

Ceramic hobs combine design and function to make an impressive piece of contemporary kitchen furniture. Radiant heating technology is employed to heat the ceramic hobs by passing an electrical current through coiled components that are concealed beneath the black glass surface. These generate heat when activated. This is transferred to your pan by way of an infrared system. You can alter the level of heating by turning the knobs or the touch controls.

Certain ceramic hobs feature dual rings, with a smaller and a larger cooking zone. This lets you select the right size for your pan. There are hobs that have boosters that create powerful heat quickly. This is ideal to cook food in or bring pans to a boil quickly.

As compared to other types of hobs ceramic cooktops take a little longer to warm up and alter temperature, but once they do they're typically more efficient in terms of energy consumption. There are vented hobs that integrate a ventilation system into the cooktop's ceramic, making sure that smoke, steam and cooking smells aren't left in your home.

Induction

The heating elements inside hobs with induction are made up of a series of copper wire coils that are placed beneath the surface. They generate electromagnets to heat pans sitting on them. The coils move free electrons within the base of your pot which transmits heat evenly and directly to your food. The surface of the hob is never hot, and the cooking zones automatically turn off as soon as your pan is removed.

Induction hobs are typically more expensive, but they also get hotter faster and use 30 to 70% less energy than gas or other kinds. Induction hobs are also easier to clean because only the inside of the pan heat up, not the surface.

Certain manufacturers offer an induction model that has additional features, for instance the pause feature that cuts off the power to your stove after you have left, or the ability to link two cooking rings simultaneously at the same time for greater flexibility. These are often called FlexInduction hobs. They are more expensive than traditional induction models but they're worth considering if you like to multitask.

ovens hobs is our favorite. It comes with four cooking zones with a Bridge function and nine power settings, which gives you a lot of options for those who are ambitious cooks. It was a great performer in our test, with fast heating and precise control when making pancakes. The cooker also comes with dishwasher built-in and an automatic pan detection feature to make cleaning even more simple. The only problem is that there are only a handful of compatible pans that can use it to cook using utensils with magnetic bases. This can be a problem when you have a large amount of cookware that's not compatible, or only the smallest portion is compatible with induction cooktops.
