The NHS suggests that your baby sleeps in a separate cot, Moses basket or crib for the first six months. A bedside crib could be a more affordable and practical alternative to a full-size cot.

Safety

Cots are safe and secure areas for babies to rest. They are covered with high sides to stop babies from falling out. They also have a solid head and footboard that has shapes cut out so that babies aren't entangled. Additionally the cot should be free from soft toys, cot bumpers and wedges that could pose dangerous to choke.

The Lullaby Trust recommends that a baby should sleep in the same space as their parents for the first six months of their life but not in their bed due to the possibility of being suffocated. Make sure the cot has been thoroughly cleaned and is the correct size for your child. It should be at a minimum of 50cm deep to prevent your baby from climbing out as they increase in height. Take off any stickers and other transfers that may fall off the inside of your cot and create a risk of choking.

The cot shouldn't be placed too close to a radiator or a bright window, as babies are at greater risk of SIDS because of overheating.
