SmartICE's innovative research methodology based on community involves young people in the development, manufacturing and deployment of ice monitoring sensors that are stationary. The program offers instruction in both technical and social skills to enable youth to become effective environmental monitors of their local ice conditions.


The project has been a winner of several accolades including the Arctic Inspiration Prize in 2016. In 2019 SmartICE established the Northern Production Centre in Nain, Nunatsiavut. This facility trains Inuit to build and deliver stationary SmartICE sensors to communities across Inuit Nunangat and northern Canada.
