How to Repair Common Oven Parts

The oven is a kitchen appliance that is commonly used to cook food items. The heat from the oven sterilizes foods and kills the majority of micro-organisms that are present in them.

An accurate oven thermometer is essential for bakers of all kinds. Understanding how your oven works can help you improve your baking and roasting abilities and eliminate those frustrating hot spots that cause havoc with cakes, cookies and other baked items.

Thermostat

The thermostat is among the most crucial components of your oven, helping to make sure that the temperature of your food is exactly what you've set on the control panel. However, just like any other electronic mechanical switch or sensor it can have issues that can cause the oven to over heat or under heat, or just not be able to maintain the temperature at the level you've set.

The oven thermostat is basically tiny strips of two different metals connected. When heated, the different metals expand and flex at different rates, forming or breaking an electrical circuit. When the thermostat's metal attains the temperature you've set on your control panel it shuts off power to the heating element. As the oven cools down the bimetallic strip expands to re-establish the circuit before turning on the heating element. This process is repeated over and over to maintain a constant temperature within your oven.

It is necessary to disconnect the oven and all screws removed to identify the problem with the thermostat. If you own a multimeter (which is a tool that measures the electrical current), set it to the ohms setting and then test the thermostat. If the multimeter shows zero or close to zero it means that the thermostat is working correctly and does not need to be changed.

If the multimeter doesn't read anything, then the thermostat is not working properly and must be replaced. Bake Element

Ovens aren't complete without the bake element which is the element that heats up to help your oven cook food. It's a simple component that turns electricity into the high temperatures needed to bake, roast, and broiling. Heating elements are typically found in electric ranges and ovens and are either uncovered or hidden under the floor of the oven.

In general, oven heating elements are made from high-resistance components like nickel-chromium alloy. They work by converting electrical energy into heat via the process of resistance, which radiates outwards into the oven's interior, causing it to increase the temperature to the desired level to cook different kinds of food.

When you start the oven, the heating elements begin to produce heat due to the high-voltage current that flows across the surface of the metal. The element is a ribbon or coil (straight or corrugated) of wire, and as the electric current flows through it, it begins to get hotter. The element will appear red hot when it is at the desired temperature.

The baked element is the main source of heat in most oven functions. It's usually found in the bottom of the oven, and is used to perform the self-cleaning function in many automatic oven models. You might notice that your oven doesn't heat up as quickly, or that your food hasn't been fully cooked.

Connect your multimeter to its red and black ports. Then, touch the probes made of steel on one side of the device against each other. Check the resistance of the previous element, and compare it to the wattage ratings of the new element. The greater the resistance of an oven element the greater power it draws from it.

Replace the element in your broiler immediately in the event that it isn't working or is acting up. Your oven needs to function properly for you to to cook your favorite foods. If your oven does not work at all, or only intermittently then the problem may be in a different part.

Light Bulb and Assembly
