bedside cot bed (also called a bassinet) is attached to the side of a bed to ensure that your child can be close enough to feed them at night while still being safe in their own sleeping space. Our mothers love that they are easy to reach, and can also pivot the sides and lower them to be closer.

Safety

A bedside sleeper cot allows babies to be within reach of parents in their beds for feeding at night, as well as monitoring and comfort, without increasing the risks associated with sharing beds (which could result in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). The cots adhere to NHS guidelines for co-sleeping, and are recommended by childcare experts, such as Dr. McKenna, director of Mother-Baby Behavioural Sleep Laboratory.

These bassinets also help to encourage healthy attachment and breastfeeding by keeping babies close. This helps them to reach milestones in their development. Parents should look for bassinets that are easy to clean, safe to use, and have been certified by a reputable organization like JPMA.

In 2023, ASTM updated their version of the voluntary standard F2906 for bedside sleepers due to the newer products which convert from a bassinet for babies to a bedside sleeper by lowering a side rail adjacent to an adult bed. This allows certain areas of lower side to be elevated above the mattress, which poses an increased risk of entrapment. The CPSC direct final rule incorporates this revision based on the existing mandatory standards under section 104 of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008(CPSIA) for sturdy baby or toddler products that have been in use more than 180days and is expected to lower the chance of injury.

Be aware that a bedside or bassinet should not be used in conjunction with blankets, pillows, or other bedding. This could be a suffocation hazard as young babies are unable to raise their heads high enough to free them from soft objects. A reclining position can result in the head tipping to move forward, thereby blocking their airway. Always place your baby on their back in a crib, bassinet, play yard or bedside sleeper and be certain to use an appropriate fitted sheet that meets the requirements of the federal government.

Convenience

Having your baby close to you at night can help create a bond between newborns and their parents. Bassinets that sleep in bed are securely attached to the side of your bed and allow you to easily reach your child for diaper changes in the middle of the night, feedings and comforting. We looked for models that had mesh sides that were transparent enough to allow for visibility, so you could monitor your baby without having to leave your bed.

You should make sure that the bassinet you purchase meets the requirements of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission's (CPSC) specifications and is deemed safe for infants. It is recommended to choose an infant bassinet that has a large base and a strong attachment mechanism. A mattress that is breathable is important as well.

Look for a model with a manual rocking function that's gentle on your baby and will help settle them to sleep. Certain models also have tilt options which can be beneficial for babies suffering from reflux or colic, but should only be used under the supervision of your doctor or health visitor.

Some bassinets include mattresses, while others require you to purchase one separately. Purchase a mattress that is designed to fit the sleeper that is placed on the bedside. Mattresses that are second-hand can be too soft, and could pose a SIDS risk. You will also need to purchase a breathable fitted bed sheet and blanket for your baby. Be sure to check the fabric lining. The foam mattress are machine washable for ease of cleaning. A storage shelf or basket is a useful feature to store things like nappies, clothing and muslins. You can also find models that have wheels for mobility around the house.

Breastfeeding Support

If you decide to breastfeed, a cot that sleeps at your bedside can help you get the most out of your evening feedings. By securing it to your bed, it allows you to reach over easily when your baby is awake to feed. The cot's side can be lowered to create a bed to sleep side-by-side. Some models also tilt to accommodate reflux.

The curving sides allow you to see and lift your baby up to feed. They won't slide off the side. Some cots with a bedside sleeper feature an automatic rocking function which can soothe your baby and help them to go to sleep faster after a meal.

When it comes to keeping your baby clean, a cozy bedding and fabric that can be machine-washed are a great option. Some models come with gentle rocking or vibration features that can help calm your baby into sleep. The storage space is another an advantage for breastfeeding moms.

It is a good idea for breastfeeding mothers to share the bed with their infants. This allows them to form an intimate bond as they sleep. Research has revealed that infants who are breastfed and share a sleep space have much better outcomes than infants fed by bottles. But, it is crucial to be aware of the risks and practices involved in sharing a bed with a newborn and select a mattress that is safe for your baby.

Some in-bed sleeping bags have soft surfaces on the edges that could keep your baby in the bag. You also need to be aware not to let the bedside sleeper slide backwards, creating an opening that your child could crawl into or roll into.

If you are concerned about the safety of a bedside sleeper take a look at attending an LLL meeting or talking with a Sleep Leader to find out more about the sleep habits of breastfeeding mothers and babies. They can explain how to create a safe sleep environment for your baby and help understand the risks of SIDS. They will also teach you about the'sweet sleep' of nursing mothers, which includes many of the same protection factors as breastfeeding.
